It means other music players and Ubuntu/banshee will be able to do ALAC!!!!
so it will be possible to ditch itunes soon!!!
Then people who use ipods and apple products can be supported by open source software.
This is huge for other operating systems and competition in the market.

Too little too late IMHO. Apple should have done this a long time ago. This kind of attitude is why I've never bought an apple product.

Other than it still being covered by patient, so incompatible with GPL3. And we know Apple are happy to use the legal system.
