Greetings from a new Hi-Fi'er

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to the forum.

I'm 24 and although I love music and movies, I think its fair to say that I'm fairly inexperienced when it comes to hi-fi. I've always listened to music either through my iPod or on my laptop. A couple of years ago, I treated myself to a relatively nice home cinema system, Denon 2310, Monitor Audio R225s, R180 & R90s with a Rel Q-150 subwoofer (not too bad for a student anyway).

After I started listening to my music through this, I realised what I'd been missing and refused to go back to my laptop speakers.

My father lent me his old Denon mini-system (UD-M30), and i bought a pair of Mourdant Short Mezzo speakers to go with it. Despite a slightly ropey volume dial, the system sounded good and I used this for a few months before I was bought a Music Streamer DAC, again from my father and I noticed a great improvement over the standard 3.5mm to phono cable.

I've now moved and to prevent my housemates from committing mutiny, I've put the cinema system in the lounge and have been left with the hi-fi system in my room.

Now I have some space and a bit more liquidity, I'm looking to start exploring the hi-fi side of things a little more seriously, which is the reason I'm here.

First steps are to get some speaker stand, a Hifi rack and then look at upgrading my amp, although I'm not sure whether to go solid state or perhaps venture down the hybrid/valve route.

In terms of music, I listen to everything from rock to classical, jazz and pop so might try a few different types and see what fits.

You've just committed the mistake that everyone here makes when they join - you've admitted that you're interested in buying something new for your system.
Even as I type this, the drums are beating & the natives will soon be gathering around the fire to suggest a million and one ways for you to spend your money on all sorts of stuff.

It would seem you are just taking your first steps down the hifi road, you have so much to look forward to. The best way to learn what's what is to have a read through some of the threads on these pages. You will find many differing opinions, preferences and a varied collection of equipment. There are also a lot of helpful people.

Settle yourself in and have a browse, there is much to learn young padowan... ;) :cool:

Welcome to AoS Simon.

As Chris has already said there a lot of people here who will happily 'spend' your money for you - but fear not, collectively we have enormous experience of audio equipment. Some of our members are in the trade themselves or are dealers or retired dealers.

Take your time - find out what aspects of music reproduction are important for you and let us know. I'm sure you will get a lot of impartial, friendly and helpful advice soon enough.

.........and even if you're convinced it does improve things - revert (if at all possible) just briefly to check that you're not fooling yourself to mentally justify the lolly you've just spent!

Welcome from me too, Simon. Ready and waiting to wave your cheque book for you (come to think of it, at 24 do you even know what a cheque book is? ;)) Seriously, it is great to have someone new to it join us, and I hope you will feel inspired with your new adventure in hifi. As someone who has been "into" music for 30 odd years, but not so much the kit, I can assure you that there is plenty of enjoyment to be had by finding better ways to reproduce your favourite music - just don't forget though that the music always comes first! (And the music side of AoS is just as important and thriving as the equipment side.) Hope you enjoy the forum. :)
