Howdy guys,
Here's a few piccys of my office system where I do my daily thang:

Now, once you've sorted the tweeter dome out - cough - may I suggest getting some long-fibre wool speaker stuffing and putting some inside the enclosures..

I can see your point although it's not distracting at all apart form a 10 second morning ritual - turn the amp on, set itunes to shuffle and away I go. I'm blinkered when it comes to my work so I don't even notice the stuff but I do appreciate music, it's good company for those 16 hour plus days - hence the system. I tried various headphones but I wasn't keen.
What do I do? I'm a self employed 3D Graphic Designer/Artist, mostly contracted to the MOD and also for the commercial sector.

Tweeter - tell me about it. I did it removing the grille the day I bought them - I said lots of things including 'bugger' :steam:

I wish i had any space that looked that flash :eyebrows: If you want to stop e reflex doing it's thing simply put some open cell foam in the port ;) Why do it though?

Aww, thanks - although flash is a bit generous. Her in doors says it's a tip, but then again she's a she so doesn't get the man-toys thing.
The 'cluttered' wall of DVD's just happened by chance - I wanted something to fill the blank wall, something to add a bit of colour to the monochrome feel and she wanted the DVD's out of the cabinet in the house, a sheet of 3/4 inch later and vuala - 2 birds, one stone and a splash of hue.
Stuffing - The 685's are pretty damn good but are more suited to a slightly bigger room and away from the wall, I've just pushed the foams far into the port to cut the 'boom' a little, they still kick quite nicely just a little less low end. They're sat on Sorbothane feet which surprisingly helped out the 'boom' somehow but not quite enough.

Ah, i was going to say that there is no need to stuff the enclosure - well i did didn't I ;) Just the ports are good enough if you have any lumpy bass problems due to enclosure placement & as you are obviously near field anyway when working it should clean things up even better in all honesty :)
Hey Mark, have you ever heard the 685 and this series in general??? Maybe it's all port noise and an undersized magnet, but all the ones I've heard, including this and the big floor stander they do, have a hollow, "box/cuppy hand" sound to the upper bass and lower midrange that's totally missing in the dearer CM range. My thoughts were that filling the cabs with speaker-wool may just reduce this without removing the bass from the port altogether. I also reckon that stuffing the ports may just increase boxy resonances from them, but obviously don't have a pair to hand to try it on.....
Re the tweeter, do B&W supply replacement dome "modules" as some manufacturers do? It should cost loads less than a complete tweeter and shouldn't be difficult to replace with care.

Hi Dave, I don't quite understand the "box/cuppy hand" analogy although I must say I had the B&W CM5's in my other system and when A/B'd I found the less expensive 685's to be a better all rounder for my requirements, rather hard to put into text but I'd say the 685's have a faster response with more 'kick' in the mids/lows as a pay-off to the refinement of the 5's..... or something like that and IIRC the 685's and the CM5's share the same drivers, just a different approach being rear/front ported and enclosure volume. However - my older B&W 601 S2's are far better at 'kick' if it is the underlining requirement.
Yes, the tweeters are available from B&W, only as a 'complete' unit though, unlike the older generations where diaphragms alone were available. Not bad at only £40 but still, £40 is...... a few crates :)

Now suck gently and you should be able to pop the dome out again. I've done this several times (!) on various damaged domes, works a charm.

I haven't gone as far as the cunnilingus method just yet, if the missus catches me all sh*t will break loose :eek:
Really though, it doesn't bother me in the slightest, if it did then I'd be quite happy to outlay the £40 for a new one.

Well it would have some effect - yes! The thing is though is given your description it sounds like the driver has a fairly high Qts to start with & these tend to work better in a sealed box. Unless you totally stuffed the enclosure (& i mean stuffed it) then you'll still have what amounts to a reflex (that now looks acoustically a bit bigger but you'll still get that blooming...
A bung in the port does far more in the way of converting it to more like a sealed box so the reflex action is severely damped & that blooming noise should be as good as gone.
No i haven't heard them by the way ;)

Thanks, it was rather cheap too: a fiver for the vase (http://www.dunelm-mill.com/shop/ice-stripy-cylinder-vase-58831) and a quid for the grass from Ikea.

I haven't had a 'HI-Fi' setup in the lounge for a long long time, going way back before the AV days when a huge multi-channel amp and a plethora of floorstanders was the norm, now all that's gone too and it's more of a 'less bulky' satellite AV affair to keep the Mrs happy.
However, my 'other' Hi-Fi setup used to live in the rear room, it was Cyrus based being a 8CD > PSX-R > 8 AMP > 8 Power Amp sat on a Hark driving B&W CM5's on Dreadnoughts, I say "it was" for one, I didn't use it very often and two, it wasn't ideal with 2 young children throwing toys around so I made the decision to sell it which funded a render farm. Now the kids have grown a little I'm starting to look around for something new... Maybe a 8200CDQ and so on.
