View Full Version : WTF Awards, does anyone care?

As I subscribe to both richer sounds, superfi and a few other weekly e-mails I have had 12 TODAY all telling me what won the What HI-Fi awards in an effort to get me to buy some of it. Is it me but who gives a damn about that mag or it's awards?

I never read it apart from when I am at the airport waiting to go on holiday when its the only hi-fi mag for sale.

The awards don't appear to have chosen anything of merit from what I can see apart from the I-phone :lolsign:

I care even less about that pish than I would about examining the contents of my last sloppy shite.

Have you ever considered applying for Poet Laureate ?

Does anyone take the WHF recommendations seriously ?

The winners take it seriously as they are getting richer from it....Chord, Atlas, QED etc, etc the cable awards are utter crap, have these people never listened to a decent cable?

Awards in all magazines are just an excuse for sloppy journalism - do a precise of something you've already written, stick a bit of a preamble on the whole thing, and bingo! - there's half an issue wrapped up & ready to go.
Some magazines warm up the same old shite for the so-called Christmas issue too.

The problem is that, apparently, it has by far the largest circulation of any audio mag. Be interesting to know how many buy it for the AV related stuff as opposed to pure audio.

Yes, of course it's relevant.

No, not to geeky audiophile nerds like us :nono: - but the other 99.5% of the buying public lap that sort of crappola up. The award winners will now fly off the shelves, and anything else will be ignored.

Big Bucks are at stake here.

You watch all the prices for the so called winners shoot up because of thier new status:eek:laughing all the way to the bank

We dont give two hoots about it no. But the fact remains the mag sells a gargantuan amount of kit based on its reviews and selling kit can only be good for the industry?

Awards issues are always the worst doesn't matter what mag it is.

And The Sun has the largest circulation of any newspaper.

My WHF came today, I suspect I'm the only subscriber on AoS! To be fair, I've defended them before, as none of the other mags include very much on the "gadget" side of "hi-fi" - and and as Marco pointed out, I am a bit of a techno slut! But anyway, it will keep me amused for 10 minutes...

:nono: I find the paper used is a bit too smooth and shiny for that.

Not only are the awards a complete joke (IMHO) the manchester show was too!

3 examples.....

Onkyo, just won award for their new range of hi-end pre and power amps, where they demo'ing them...NO..I sat for 20 mins watching THOR on their giant screen waiting for some action to start to showcase their speakers and amps...absolute rubbish, no action, I was dozing off so I left the room, Natalie Portman was looking fine though!

Rega, the new award winning turntable was playing, I sat down, 3 seconds later I got back up and left, absolutely abysmal sound.

Audio Note, sign on the door written on a scrap of paper, room shut today!

Really? I can't see any awards in my copy  Best home cinema amp £350-£700 but nothing for the pre/power that I can find?

The awards are a bit silly but they do interesting articles sometimes. Every issue they do a readers ab test on bd players cables and so on.
Back me up here Alex before i get slaughtered.

:lolsign: I guess i could say the same of me, so:-

If you are ever up in North Cambridgeshire or heading this way please send me a PM Colin, you are more than welcome to judge my AV system ;)

To be honest Mark part of the entertainment is the readers commenting on the cheap as chips components as sounding better than the expensive stuff without realizing. Says to me there is a lot of emperors new clothes stuff in audio and ive been caught out by that too. Sometimes those cheap chinese dacs can sound as good as the pricey audio jewellery and readers test page sometimes reflects that.

The thing is with WHF - IMO - is that it is just like its sister title - What Car? - it majors on providing lots of data, and covers as broad a spectrum of Audio and AV as possible. Now, sometimes I'm quite happy with What Car? - just want to see what Honda and Toyota have brought out recently, and how good the latest Vauxhall is, or come up with a shortlist for my next car based on how big the boot is and what MPG it can do.

I'll admit though that if push came to shove, I'd probably rather read Top Gear with all of it revolving around supercars I could never afford to run, let alone buy...

Ive found their reviews have been spot on most times. I got a few things on the back of them.

Starting monday and following a double win for Furutech, the GT40 DAC/Phono Stage/Headphone Amplifier was voted product of the year by What Hi-Fi (most people in the know knew it was an excellent product when launched), as well as the GT40 the Formula 2 USB cable was also voted best USB cable in the same awards.

Now I'm Confused ?
