Best android app for FLAC

Hi Guys,

I've just updated my mobile phone to an HTC Desire S and want to play Flac files on it. Can I get some advice on the best app for it please?

Oh, almost forgot. What about using it as a Squeezebox controller? :)

Hi Bernie, I've got a desire and use the following;

poweramp for FLAC playback, it has 2 library modes one uses the android media library which at android 2.2 doesn't recognise FLAC (not sure which OS comes with the S), the other is to use a file directory structure which is fine for FLAC. I created a FLAC directory under music (on the SD card, I also upgraded it to 32Gb), and it will provide a list of albums in alphabetical order with jpegs, it all depends how you set it up, but I find a single level of albums is the best...it does FLAC gapless very well

I think it's about £3, there are some free ones but nothing as usable IMHO

SqueezeCommander for SB control, again it's about £3, well worth it, the logitech one is a pile of poo, there are others but the Squeezecommander one is so much better, and with local caching of data is much quicker than the SB controller.

Try Logitech's freebie - some phones don't have the processing power to handle it, but yours should be ok.

If that's not too good then Squeeze Commander isn't too expensive, and it works like a dream.

As far as FLAC goes there are a number of media players that can do it and most of them have free trial periods.
Just look in the Android store.

I'll be curious to hear what the sound reproduction of Flacs on the Desire is like compared to my Sansa Clip.

The only thing I can say about the sound quality is that it's good enough to differentiate between vbr mp3 and FLAC, and that's the standard desire, I'm not sure if the S uses the same DAC or not, I've been trying to find out with little success...:scratch:

Bernie FYI I started a similar thread on the subject of FLAC players a while ago, buried in there somewhere is a step by step post of how to upgrade to a larger SD card seamlessly on a desire, which might be useful if you're going to use FLAC, I've got about 90ish albums on a 32Gb card, with a couple of gig spare...

Just got an android update today for PowerAmp (V2), which includes the following...

Full ReplayGain implementation either track or album, with an additional ReplayGain preamp, to make up for the overall volume loss...seems to work well at around +4db :)

The android media library can now be used for a FLAC collection (previously one had to use the folder option), so Artists, Albums, Genres etc. and additionally Playlists...which is excellent now they've implemented ReplayGain.

In addition the interface seems to have been improved, there's also some additional DSP stuff, but I always turn that off anyway...;)
