View Full Version : Sl1210mk3d for sale - maybe ??
Hi, Wife bought this as a birthday present for me, well she paid, i found it :)
It's in near mint condition, never been DJ'ed or abused. Was part of an unused bedroom system of a spoilt brat who wanted 1210's then went off to uni and left it all behind.
Its in totally stock form and has a DL103 with less than 100 hours use on it.
I'm just not getting into the vinyl thing even after buying 5 really nice albums, i just can't be arsed with the hastle of changing sides and finding records etc...
So i may sell it, looking for £350 otherwise it stays put :)
May swap for a new style McMini or iPad2.
What phono stage are you using and am I right in saying you have ATC 50ASL's?
The thing is, the 103 isn't too happy in a stock Techie and there are other, more "accurate" cartridges (bear with me Marco et al here please) which may suit the ATC's better, if I have it right..
Much as I feel about vinyl vs master vs digital copy, I still love playing records and enjoying the music coming off them, my tastes veering more to an Ortofon M20FL Super and associated OM descendants, AT440MLa, Shure M97XE (or SAS tipped V15 III or V), you know, summat with a bit of sparkle and life to it. The DL103 is a touch smooth and refined with strong bass and if I'm correct about your speaker choice (:scratch:), it's not going to be a happy marriage in my experience.. Put it this way, a friend and client I sold some ATC50ASL's to used an AT OC9 to play records with as the lean and lively balance suited the speakers better - his preamp of choice was a Linn Kairn III though.....
Does the above help, or have I got it totally wrong (again)?

I don't have the SCM50ASL's anymore, a long story... but i now own:
SL1210MK3D
AppleTV1, for digital
Perreaux 150i with DAC and Phono Modules
SP1/2R's (18 months old and also for sale on AOS, WW & PFM at £1500) to be replaced with ATC SCM20SL's which are on order already!
I Keep buying TT's with the thought of getting back into my huge vinyl collection which is mainly from my DJ/club days. But i also have a few hundered none DJ albums which I've mostly got digital versions anyhow.
I just cannot be bothered, i think.....
The 20's I first owned replaced some Harbeth HL5's, which were near enough to the BC1 "BBC Legacy" to make this post reasonably valid..
I appreciate the much better midrange on the SL drivers over the ones I had in my passives (my SL's were in the ASL-Pro Active model), but my gawd do the passive ones need rowing along. Every Watt of your amp will be used up I reckon - an otherwise mild mannered and freshly updated Quad 405-2 used to get to egg-frying temperatures quite easily :) The bass of the ATC's will be leaner and tighter possibly, but I wonder if you'll miss the "organic" midrange of the Spendors? It'll be fascinating (please) if you'll describe the impressions you get, going from one to t'other :)
Now I've found the real reason for my past system issues (my ears!!!!!), I'm delighted with my old BC2's. If I want to hear summat balanced more "modern" and "up-front," I have the upstairs setup with AVI Pro-Nines, which I must admit have taken a while to get used to, due to the more ATC-like bass reproduction and forward and very explicit midrange. Damned good little speakers though IMO, once acclimatised to.
I don't know where your power amp is situated in regards to the speakers, but back in my days selling ATC's, it was suggested that if at all possible, the speaker leads were kept as short as possible and the power amp placed at the speakers - if possible of course.
I'll post my finding when I've got them run in a little :) The 20's will defiantly be leaner sounding. They were invented for music analysis, whereas the SP1/2R's, or BC1's, were made to test broadcasted sound for long-term listening.
Both have different agendas, briefs and places within the pro audio world, but both have very valid long term proof of one doing something the other doesn’t. In an ideal world I’d have both sets of speakers with two of the same amps, but that would just be too nerdy....:eek:
The Perreaux amp is a very clever design, it's a class A design with some class B in the MOSFET output stage, its very valve like, with SS accuracy and power.

Noticed in the Spendor picture you have the original box for the 1200, that must add a lot of value. Stick it on ebay with a reserve price i think you will get a buyer. Seen gold mk5s go for well over a grand on the bay since panasonic have stopped Technics production so worth a try.

Older 20's were dull if anything, the tweeter set quite low on the upper midrange, but the active 20ASL pro's were too sharp if anything (I wonder if mine needed topping up with ferro-fluid?). Of course, I forgot the current 20's have different tweeters. I also very much appreciate the "general purpose" nature of the BC1's and relatives/descendants in the wider scheme of things :)

Raj - it wouldn't hurt to give prices for both, because the chances are your 1210 buyer may not want a nice Denon MC cart, which may hold back some interest.
You can of course continue to give first refusal to buyers willing to take the lot.
It'd rather do a swap for an iPad TBH :) least hassle then....

Guys, still not had a response, so it’s back up for sale again.
As I explained to Stuart, I reduced the price in haste/frustration to £250 without thinking and it appears I cannot amend the post above BUT the price really does need to be £300.
Its cost me a lot more than that.

I'm still waiting for you to explain why you think that the 103 is less "accurate" than an OC-9.... ;)
I'm afraid the reality is that both produce their own respective forms of coloration, in order to create the sonic signatures they have, so they are in fact simply both inaccurate in different ways.
Therefore, whether one uses a 103 or an OC-9, it's simply a case of choosing your own favoured version of 'inaccuracy'/brand of coloration!

FYI, Damian and I have agreed sending this deck over to Dublin would be too risky as i don’t have the polystyrene packaging but I do have shed loads of bubble wrap and the original box. It can be sent safely but sending abroad, no matter how short, has its pit falls.
Still for sale :)
FYI there are plenty of couriers who can do the job as I send to ireland weekly and the insurance costs less than a tenner plus the shipping cost of course

Bump. :) the mk3 is ALMOST exactly the same as mk5 before it became the MK5G. These have a more accurate digital speed servos.
