where to buy a shield/cover for hifi interconnect ?

Hello,
As in title, I can't find in the google place, where I can buy few meters of a hifi/interconnect cable shield (I make my own cables, as buying them would ruin me very soon). I bought many meters of belden 1764 (don't remember right now, but it's a great as interconnect for subwoofer, and also all hifi interconnects. Anyway it so stiff with original (quite terrible turquoise color) shield, I need to remove it and use softer shield, to cover naked cable.
Have you got any experience in this area ?,
your help would be appreciated,

Try searching for Mylar foil and copper braid. These are common screening materials used in cables.

Try typing copper foil into an ebay search ;) Take it from me that i have looked high & low for just about the very same thing, only difference was i wanted to screen a mains cable. It's like looking for hens teeth or horse feathers :rolleyes:

You'll find there is a variety of copper foil on ebay with conductive glue, so you can wrap it round your cable & be sure of getting good sheilding. Make sure you heatshrink over the top of it afterwards ;)

Also, I'm guessing as you refer to the 'shield' being turquoise in colour you are actually referring to the outer turquoise PVC jacket and not the internal copper 'shielding'.

So I think what you want to do is replace the outer jacket with something more flexible? If so, you can try braided cable sheathing of the required diameter - something like THIS (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4m-4mm-BRAIDED-CABLE-SLEEVING-BRAID-SLEEVE-COVER-/250887066662?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Suppl ies_ET&hash=item3a6a08d426#ht_1470wt_1139)?..... then use some heat shrink to tidy the ends.

I guess the stiff PVC jacket has been stripped off leaving the screening exposed.
So maybe heat shrink is all that needed.

9.5 mm or 12.7 mm 2:1 shrink ratio heatshrink would do, choose thin wall to keep it flexible.

Any ideas, simple and cheap to make good power cables ?
where to buy cable, and other parts - any experience you have, please share, as I am thinking about changing cables at least to power amp, dacs, and maybe later on - if decide it is beneficial - few others things

honestly I still do not understand how power cable could affect Sound Quality, but I read it does. I don't understand mobile phones neither:)
I remember reading about power conditioner to dac - as Mr Kingwa (AUDIO GD) designer mentioned it has a crucial role to SQ,
If you have any experience with this - please share too,

Oh power cables definately affect the sound & can lower the background noise ;)

If I was you I'd have a chat with Mark @ Mark Grant Cables & David & Mains Cables R Us. These both supply ready made good quality cables & as far as I'm aware off the reel cable, no harm in asking :) This is possibly your best bet for the amount of hassle & time that making your own may not seem so worthwhile. Definately if it needs to be flexible at any rate!

I'm using Mark Grant DSP2.5 in my system & it's great cable, the only reason I did some research into making my own is because no-one can supply me with a mains cable which is screened & has the current carrying capacity I need :eyebrows:

What i need is a 10mm^2 from the consumer unit, so i thought I'd get some 10mm^2 twin & earth & then cover it in either copper or aluminium foil. So i bought the cable (all 22M of it) & sooner or later i'll get the foil & some heatshrink to cover it with. It won't be exactly flexible, but that doesn't matter as it'll be installed the once.

No i didn't, nice link by the way :) However you are 100% correct, the screen is only connected to Earth at the mains plug end & not the equipment end (where it is insulated from all the other connections) ;)

Finally found my prize (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250938018232?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649) (ignore the 25mm diameter bit, the 20/25 refers to 20mm diameter & 25M long) :) Flexible steel conduit with a 35mm bend radius & covered in an overall stainless steel braid. It'll just be a question of stuffing a load of cable through 18M of this stuff :eek:

External diameter of 20mm & an internal diameter of 16.9mm, it will take a 10mm^2 twin & earth cable with a tad of room to spare. Finally I'll be able to have a fully screened cable back to the consumer unit :cool:

Now I just need some 20mm cable clips :doh: Oooh, these would look quite funky (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SOLID-BRASS-P-CLIPS-20mm-CABLE-WIRING-PIPE-NEW-PK-25-/250312988785?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a47d11871) with that stainless steel braid :)

This will be going in next year when I'll need that 10mm^2 cable :eyebrows:

Yup, I did think about buying it straight off the bat at £40 + delivery... Instead I put in an offer at £35 & got a counter offer of £37.50 which I was thinking of in the first place :D

E2A:- That might not be exactly the same stuff Mark, what I bought is steel but with a stainless braid covering it. I have no doubt there is well over £100 worth there though ;)
