View Full Version : Build Your Own Album Cover

For a bit of fun..........

I've been playing about with this for a few months now, on & off.

The idea is to create your own album cover from totally random elements generated from visiting three different websites.

STEP 1: The name of your band comes from a random Wikipedia page.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random

The band name is the title of the article.

STEP 2: The name of the album is from a page of quotations.
http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3

You use the last 4 words of the last quote on the page.

STEP 3: The picture on the cover come from .....
http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/

You use the third picture no matter what it is.

Then you copy & paste these three things into photo editing software or something to create the design using whatever talent you may or may not have. (I actually use MSWord).

What I find amazing is the number of times that the photo/picture is particularly apt for the name of the album/quotation used.

The only problem with this is that if you do it twice on the same day, you have to find another set of rules to define how you get the quotation for your album title as this is only updated daily. But it is kind of interesting using the same title & seeing what different band names & photos can go with it.

I've done one for today's quote, so if anyone has a go today, I'll post mine later.

In the meantime, I've attached one I particularly like from a while back. The band is Kombo North & the album title is 'By One Single Error' which I thought was pretty well spot on for the picture. There was NO CHEATING involved to find an appropriate match. It kind of reminds me of The Smiths (who I loathe). Click the thumbnail to enlarge it.

Have fun & post some up if you try it.

Nice little random album cover generator!

I designed the covers for all my albums, and even some uncompleted albums too. That's almost more fun that writing the music. :) In the past I've used a combination of Mediaface, Apple Drawing, Paint, MS Photo Editor, Photoshop 7, Graphic Converter, Pixen and Paintbrush. Now I just use Drawing and Preview with a touch of iPhoto. Keep them simple I say!

I thought I'd do a cover for a compilation CD I'm burning..............

It looks a bit like something on the ECM label - Jan Garbarek maybe?

Nice one Martin - I wonder if this is as good as their 1st album 'With A Bar'?!

I rather like 'Chiefdoms of Sierra Leone' as a group name.

This is mine. I swear I didn't cheat...!

Only noticed afterwards that I had 5 words not 4 in the title. Sorry.

What will be even funnier is if these pictures come up in random Google searches and just happen to be actual band names... I can just imagine the completist collector's having a fit trying to find an unknown release!

Of course, the next stage of this fantastically fun game is to build up a fictitious band history and album track list. For the more creative, maybe a sensational tabloid story too... :lolsign:

I wanna hear that album Keith, is it available on Spotify???

That's how Porcupine Tree started out !
From Wikipedia:
Origins (1987–1990)

Porcupine Tree originated in 1987 as a collaborative hoax project by Steven Wilson and Malcolm Stocks. Partially inspired by the psychedelic/progressive bands of the 1970s (such as Pink Floyd) that had dominated the music scene during their youth, the two decided to form a fictional legendary rock band named The Porcupine Tree. The two fabricated a detailed back-story including information on alleged band members and album titles, as well as a "colourful" history which purportedly included events such as a meeting at a 1970s rock festival and several trips in and out of prison.

It sounds just my cup of tea

Have edited my post to include a track list. If any Mods think it's a bit risque I shall remove the track list ;)

LOL indeed, just wait until someone claims to have heard Magic Circle Festival, enthusing over their jazz-rock-fusion-punk style.

I think it is quite 4AD like

I think I might use this one for a compilation CD I'm doing to take to Whittlebury.

Edit: I can't resist messing about - I think I prefer this:

That's actually happened several times when I've done this - but it's never been a band I've recognised.

To be honest, I have largely ignored the rules - I love the album title from the random quote finder though :) All my images have been heavily altered/constructed (other than the first of two people on a bench - that's only had a small bit of work done on it).

Yes I am thanks, very much so - in fact, I think I've become a touch obsessed with it :)
