View Full Version : Thorens TD 160 IEC Socket
Has anyone fitted an IEC socket to a Thorens TD 160?
Are there any sonic improvements.

It's not something I've ever considered doing. I've improved the mains cable, but it remains hard-wired. Not sure if adding a connector in there is going to help any.

Can't see it myself either, I know on Analogue Dept it was one of the mods but there doesn't seem to be much dialogue on it.

I just put a decent bit of 3-core on mine, and attached the ground to the chassis.

I built one of these (middle) into a new plinth recently, whether it makes any difference to the overall sound I can't say but it is more convenient to unplug at the top end rather than delving into the rats nest of wiring down behind.:)

Can't complain about convenience compared with hard-wired. And upgrading to the latest fashion in mains cable would be more difficult without an IEC.
At the moment I've got my TD160 hard-wired on the tt end with a US plug on the other end going into a 110v step-down transformer. Planning to hard wire it into the transformer at some point.
Why use a step-down transformer and 110V?
I had a good gander at my TD160mk2 today and still unsure what I'm going to do with it long term. the motor doesn't draw huge amounts of current, so don't know whether a heavier mains cable is worth all the faffing about tbh... The cable used on this one is a grey coloured outer jacket with twin core inside. All I've done for now is to wire this into an old Croft 2A rated mains filter I had spare.
The best upgrade you can make to a TD160 really, is to get a Pro-ject Speed-Box SE, or Wave Mechanic or similar. Possibly an internal re-wire out to a Mose/Hercules or maybe a second hand Linn Lingo, which it seems can be got to work too with some ingenuity. far more fundamental than pratting around with a socket you really don't need to use :)

Dave can you run all that by me again, I'm very new to fiddling about and you've confused me (not that it takes a lot).

The step-down transformer was part of a power supply inspired by the Naim Armegeddon and the Michell wotsitsname. It has made the motor a lot more quiet. Total outlay so far on it is less than £15. More than half of that has been shipping.
The replacement mains cable was really just to add an earth.
After reading up on tinternet about the Thorens supply I ordered some .33uf caps as replacements. Turns out it needed .1uf. It all depends on the number of poles I believe.

It ok Dave I've done some Googling and understood
So do I now regarding the transformer :)
I had a well known power cord knocking about doing nothing, thats why I posted about the IEC socket.
Anyway today I removed the IEC plug from the cord and did some "welding" inside .
Success apart from the odd :wowzer: when I put a record on. ;)
