Hello all!

I am a new member from cheeseland in the states (Wisconsin). I am an infrequent and somewhat challenged internet user. But, I love music and hi-fi! Music first. My system consists of SOTA Sapphire w/ Well-Tempered Arm and Grado Signature 8mz, Discovery cables, c-j PV2a pre-, c-j MV-75 amp, and orig. Spendor SP1 speakers. The speakers allowed me to largely (not completely) give up the chase for resolution. Perhaps I'll tell that story another day, not appropriate for introductions... At the moment I'm not happy w/ the system though - it sounds very constricted, dull, and I've re-tubed, re-capped, etc. I've been told I need to use high-current solid-state with these speakers, AND, 've also been told that this isn't so w/ the original SP1s but is so w/ latter versions. Any advice would be appreciated.

Awhile back I noticed a poster who inquired about jazz piano music and received many good suggestions - Bill Evans, etc. As this is my favorite type of music I would like to offer this individual a few suggestions. All different so you can discern different styles and determine which direction you want to pursue. Hope it helps.

Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Himself
Bud Powell - Bud Plays Bird (cd only)
Jimmy Rowles - Lilac Time (cd only)
Lennie Tristano - The New Tristano
Art Hodes and Milt Hinton - Just the Two of Us (LP only)
Art Tatum - any solo
Teddy Wilson - I Got Rhythm
Jaki Byard - Here's Jaki!
Tommy Flanagan - Sea Changes (cd only)

Thank you for the warm greetings and 'cheese' comradeship (yours is probably better than ours). I'm not familiar w/ most of your gear, other than the biggies - Yamaha, Sony, etc.

Best,
Barry

Welcome Barry, from another lover of the SP1's. Afraid I can't help, as I've yet to go the tube route but certainly no complaints with solid state...

As for cheese, apart from my music collection I guess Stilton is the nearest to me in Cambridgeshire - love it! (Even closer to Mark (Reid Malenfant) who will no doubt be along to say hi in a while.)

Enjoy the forum and look forward to your speaker story one day... :)

Thanks Alex. I've now heard from multiple people who like to use Audiolab w/ Sp1s. A few years back I contacted Spendor to ask them what amplification they recommended for use w/ the SP1s, and they said Audiolab or Quad. I did wonder if they had a financial interest in recommending these companies though... Too cynical I guess.

Best,
Barry

Welcome Barry.
You may not know but we take cheese very seriously on the Art of Sound - not only are we the only hi-fi forum with a cheese section, but it's so important that it's been made into a sticky!

Come to think of it, there's actually a cheesy (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4932&highlight=cheese) thread on this forum as well.

Hi Barry and a warm welcome to AoS, it was me who posted about Jazz Piano, so I am very grateful for your suggestions and I will be looking them all up :) (I'm a music first guy as well).

A cheesehead too, are you a Packers fan?

Hope you have fun here and thanks again for the recommendations.

Hi Barry & a warm welcome to AoS :) Sorry, i can't help with the SP1 crisis, maybe Dave (DSJR) might be able to shed a bit of light on the subject at some stage (if he knows them - which i feel he probably will) ;)

Bests to you & i hope you enjoy your stay here

Hello,

Yes, I am a Packer fan but even more so a baseball fan and soccer fan. A few weeks ago our local TV station was supposed to show a replay of Chelsea vs ManU after the Packer game. In their infinite wisdom they decided to show reruns of a bad reality show - Cops. Ergh! Let me know if you like any of the pianists and maybe I can make further recommendations.

Best,
Barry
