Hello everyone,

I have just discovered this forum and will, hopefully, find a few things to discuss in due course.

My hi-fi has been static for some years and I can't see any reason to change it now, although the CD player is past its best I suspect.

Music is everything from Baroque through to Jazz and the blues. Even listen to pop music at times. So Bach is the father, Clapton is the son and Ron Carter is the holy ghost.

I listen to Quad ELS57's driven by Leak Stereo 20 with Creek passive pre or Quad 33 depending on mood. Second system is KEF101s with Quad 50Ds and whichever pre is not on the main system. CD player is Marantz 63SE and the record player is home made but based on the old Origin Live kit and an LVX arm. I also have Quad 34/306 as a spare.

Nothing too exotic there but very musical indeed. Guitars sound exactly the same as the ones I make so who needs more?

The KEFS are stuck together in one corner as there is a bed in the room whilst I recover from back surgery.

Hi Gordon, welcome to AoS from me also :) I'm sure you'll be able to replace the whole CD transport mechanism in the 63SE for about £20 or so new & i'm not kidding ;) The draw tends to get a bit noisey after a time when opening & closing, making rather unpleasant squealing noises :eyebrows:

I own both a 63SE & 63KI so it's not as though i'm unexperienced ;)

Thanks for the welcome. You are quite right, the drawer is a noisy so and so. It still seems to sound OK though. My wife has the ears of a bat (er... thats the only part) and she reckons it sounds the same as it always has. It hasn't had too much use until now as I've been a vinyl person but the records are wrapped in plastic at the mo because of building work.

These old Quads have survived the test of trendiness over the years. OK they might not sound as crystal clear as some but they make great music and are an ergonomic joy and look cool too.

The 50D's are not as good as the Leak but are really not that far behind and I can happily live with them and have, when the valves needed replacing.

Have you done up the 33 yet? if you can solder, the Dada upgrade kit is cheap and easy to do. I'd probably leave C400 alone with 57's, although i found that changing it as suggested on VE, did seem to open up the midrange in terms of "3-D."

Thanks for the welcome. I tend to leave well alone when it comes to hi-fi. I have no technical knowledge whatsoever, although I can use a soldering iron, I probably wouldn't know where to aim it!.

My expertise is with wood. I'm a guitar maker and turner.

As we are trying to work on the house and I managed to slip three disks last year and am still recovering, music is being rather neglected. I even listen to iTunes through the Mac whilst on the various forums. Not exactly high end.
