Thanks all, I forgot all about this thread. My current system is brand new and rather unorthodox in some ways. I use a MacBook feeding a firewire link to an MH LIO 8+8 channel ADC/DAC, the ADC part not yet used, with two analog outputs feeding a pair of Neumann (KH series) O 3OO active speakers via balanced XLR cables. It's a brand new system and not sorted out yet. Plans include replacing the laptop with a dedicated MacMini and an iPad for headless operation, replacing iTunes with Audinirvana, adding two subwoofers, and most importantly the inbuilt MH DSP+ facility to further experiment with what it can do. Various possibilities include implementing digital XOs for the subs when I get them, routing analog sources through ADC modules, providing DSP EQ for some room correction, time alignment, etcetera. All in good time. There is no CD player, preamp or power amp proper, these were all sold when I moved. The setup was put together with a view to play Red Book, and 96 and 192 HD material, for everything to be upgradeable, and to shun unnecessary complication (like preamps).
There is also an unused kit-made tube preamp and some components of a retired old setup that I intend to revive as discussed in another thread.
I listen to classical music almost exclusively these days.
