We live in a one bedroom flat. I own around 5000 cd's next to no space left and still more on the wants or must have list. to cap it all I have around 3500 LP's and still have around 200 still to hear. Some of my fave albums are either to much bother to search out and many LP's ar lost in my collection ..which for the most part are in no order. Was thinking about a clear out but believe it or not my missus thinks I should keep the lot except for some doublers. I have no answer for myself appart for the fact I'm an obsessive music buyer and secondly music fan.:mental::(
Tricky one. If I were you, I'd keep them all except the duplicates. But since I'm me, what have you got for sale? :lol:

John, It sounds like you need to start a thread called 'Sparrows Going Cheep'!!
You should certainly sell the duplicates you have - keep the best copy for yourself & put the others up for sale. The money you make might convince you to do a proper rationalisation job. I've had a couple of small clear-outs and one major one over the years and had very few regrets. I made a few rules about what would go & what wouldn't and stuck to them.

When i switched from Vinyl to CD i made a short list of 3,000 albums , i carefully filtered that list out to around 500..I'm still searching for them now.
I have loads of doublers but don't think any of you guys would be interested in whats available. It would take a while to look them all out but I will do that in the next few weeks. I have all the queen remasters (the first ones). Pink Floyd Oh By the Way box. Quite a lot of recent Tangerine Dream. And a lot of others which are being honest only worth peanuts.

What does chopping off 2,500 titles from my short list tell yer ;) To be honest i'm considering down sizing even more, i just dont have the intrest in it like i used to.

Can you try to find a spare copy of Edgar Froese "Solo?" I thought I had two copies but they must have gone in the DSJR vinyl-purge of ten plus years ago.. Any recent TeeDee duplicates too, post "Madcap..."

You could always rip the CDs to FLAC and pop them on a server, then put the CDs in storage...at least it would give you more room for your vinyl ;)

Unless you're on the ground floor with this weight you could be soon sharing a maisonette with your neighbour. :)
Depends on collectability and condition. Would sort out favourite and mint vinyl first. Only keep collectables if in less than optimum condition. I think you need to halve your vinyl. About 1600 lp's fills most of my smallest bedroom so how you manage is beyond me. 5000 Cd's is excessive. Since CD ought to be for music unreleased or difficult to obtain on vinyl I suggest keeping CD only releases or discs with decent extra tracks over the LP. Frankly downloading to music server is a waste of time IMO as you will never listen to most of it anyway. Should be easy to get down to 2000 CD's but harder to sell than vinyl. If it doesn't go here list the lot on ebay and see what goes, though that will be a lengthy process. If you get only £1 mimum per CD or Vinyl you will be considerably richer and could invest in better hi-fi. Tip - Start eveything at 99p and see what it fetches.

...drives me crazy to have so much music; but, not be able to find it when I want to listen to it or just view the artwork when I want to admire it...
I always find these situations a blessing in disguise. I'm probably right in the same neighborhood (between 3500 and 4000 LPs; maybe 1,000 CDs). In the beginning of the year a finally broke down and got some cheap (yet sturdy and somewhat stylish shelving). Previously the LPs were in crates or leaned up against the walls with only two proper shelving units which held roughly 800 LPs. Anyway, this was a grand opportunity to re-alphabetized the lot, work in about 300 hundred records and make it easier to find things I know I had. With collections that grow to this size, such an exercise makes it inevitable to come across cool stuff that's been forgotten about as well. There's just something great about having a tune pop in your head, being able to walk right over to where it is... pop it on the platter and away you go. I try to remind myself that my preferences change all the time and often circle back around. So, I'll have to join the others that say "get rid of the duplicates and keep the rest". It's not a good feeling to want to hear/experience music you thought you had only to realize you purged it a while ago. :( Just one man's take on it.
I can always put the kids in the garage. ;)

You wont sell em unless you want peanuts for em. i will never ever amass a CD collection again it's too much dead money.. I was lucky enough the other day to offload 200 CD's to a friend which was a relief..
Get this..apart from the boxes of CD's i'm trying to get rid of, i have less than 30 CD's on my shelf i'm keeping, all of which are japanese collectors editions that only increase in value & thats the way it will stay with me.
