Hello,
very new to this and this is first online post on any forum.
Music has ben a long term interest for me and more recently hi-fi.
I listen to music from 60 up to recently such as rock and folk. PInk floyd,, horslips, stones, foo fighters, rory gallagher and the prodigy. Most recent buy was foo fighters 'wasting light' on vinyl.
play these on;
Rega p3, rb300 with ortofon mc25e
musical fidelty x-lps phono stage
jungson ja1/ja99 pre power amp
jas audio orca speakers
also
marantz cd63ki modified by audiocom
technics 120 with sme 3009
leak 12+ amps
my hope is to plan and keep to a sensible upgrade path

I got the speakers (picture below hopefully) from shadow audio in scotland after they were reviewed in hi-fi world which was the font of all my hi-fi knowledge then. one of the reason i chose them was they were not too fussy about placement and i had to wall mount them as i have active kids.
vinly wise Currrently thinking about taking the rb300 rega from the p3 and gettting a vta and board from sound support and trying it on the sl120. i can listen and make up my mind but I am assuming that the technics would sound better than the rega deck:scratch:

The SL120 can probably be made to sound better than the Rega but only after some work, I think, and it may not suit the Rega arm. I am not an SL120 expert, knowing the SL1210 far better. Perhaps someone who owns one can comment?

Keep the SME on the SL120, get some sorbothane sheets or feet and stand the Techie on this/these, remove the lid when playing and try an inexpensive cork mat, preferably on top of the existing one, adjusting the arm-height to suit ;) It's very much a deck of its time though, and feeds back badly if not properly founded and sited.

The SME is fine with highly compliant cartridges and it's a good thing IMO that Jico are doing the SAS styli for Shure V15's of all models, as this should give this old deck and arm a new lease of life (obviously, I don't know exactly what cartridge you're using :)). Just 'cos you can't readily use most MC types in it shouldn't ever be an issue these days. The blac-tack gunk for the headshell damps out hf energy transmission into the shell and pipe well and possibly a new exit lead will open the sonics out further...

A Planar 3 in comparison may well be rather better straight off, although careful siting pays dividends still. The rubber-cord drive is inferior, although a new belt and the fixed-motor upgrade helps a lot here, but the old Techie will need a lot of tweaking to give of its best and should end up being as good with loads of care.....
