Apple Inc has announced that the company's co-founder Steve Jobs has died. He was 56 years old.
In a statement, the company said: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.
"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.
"His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Thats very sad news. I didn't realise he was so ill that it was a matter of weeks after he retired until he would die.
Iv'e always been a big Apple fan having bought my first Mac in the early 90s followed by my Ipod and then Iphone.
Everything Apple has made has been copied by others trying to jump on their bandwagon. That's a sign that they are great innovaters and market leaders.

Flags are flying at half mast at Apple. I think they have missed a trick by not taking another bite out of the Apple to signify the loss.

Although to be strictly accurate almost everything that gave Apple the kick start was cribbed from Xerox.

Not strictly true. I had designed and launched a MP3 player years before Apple came up with the iPod. Not many people know that.

Apple lossless encoding (ALAC) is their take on FLAC.
FLAC was there first.

He wasn't perfect, who is...but
the man was a visionary genius.... live with it!, accept it, quit whining and show a bit of respect.
The tech world will be a poorer place without him, like it or not.
Without knocking the other stuff, to my mind he deserves our thanks for allowing Toy Story to be created.

Sad news.
I'm not an Apple fan boy but I have big respect for the way Jobs was able to take existing, boring technology and turn it into products that were so desirable that almost everyone in the world wanted one. That was his genius.
No disrespect here, he was a visionary and had a way with an audience. If anyone wants to see a good film of his early beginnings in creating Apple I recommend Pirates of Silicon Valley, which was recommended to me by Nick (Beechwoods). Very entertaining and eye-opening.
However, total inaccuracies do need correcting and that is all that happened earlier in the thread.
I don't think anyone has been disrespectful (as that was not intended) and it is very sad that Steve has passed at such a young age. His vision will be missed as he had a very insightful mind and it cannot be denied he was a genius.
But what I can't fathom is the blinkered attitude of some folk that Apple is the 'be all and end all' of what's best in technology, which it isn't - Apple is part of the whole picture, not the only picture and I think even Steve Jobs would agree with that. But you are right Marco, this is not the time or place to discuss such things, so apologies.
Rest in peace Steve.
I've been feeling gloomy today since reading the news. What stands out for me (as a mobile telecoms consultant) is how Steve led a company that produced an Internet phone with a consistent set of capabilities and a proper user experience.

It will be interesting to see whether Apple continues to be successful without Steve Jobs at the helm. There is no doubt at all that Microsoft have declined due to Bill Gates stepping back and being replaced with a generally clueless individual (Steve Ballmer). There may be a parallel here.

RIP to that man. The very fact Apple are vying for the richest company in the world says a lot. I'm sure some would retort that the products are overpriced but they've created products people want. Simple, as, that. Of course being that big and that influential creates a hate campaign. Double edged sword and all that.
I sincerely hope that the new CEO along with Jobs' business plan he'd no doubt created before his untimely passing (which was clearly no shock to him, his family and Apple) can continue the momentum and continue the vision... And the best 2 OS's in the business.
In business terms it's huge kudos to Apple and Jobs for selling products that tie in users to Apple content provision, selling and very importantly BRANDING attractive, aspirational products enabled them to do this.
Jobs turned Apple around - in his second term at the helm - from a laughing stock to a company at the very forefront of technological development. His vision has truly changed the way we interact with technology. I'm writing this on a Macbook Pro, and whilst I know it's a pricey alternative - it works so elegantly, it is designed so beautifully, it makes using it a pleasure.
There were some videos posted recently about Apple's vision - one from about 87 that basically predicted the iPad, before the internet was around in any meaningful form. It's taken a while for the technology to catch up with the vision but it has now, and I'm grateful to Jobs for making computers objects that are fun to interact with - I think that's his greatest legacy. Computers have always been good at doing the back room stuff, but under Jobs Apple turned them into objects of desire - certainly for those of us who appreciate product design. For that I'd like to say thanks, Steve.

As you say under Steve the design of Apple products really took off and left others trailing behind.
Apple turned computers from grey monosalabic tombestones into things of great beauty and desire.

When Bill Gates leaves this mortal coil I will allow his devotees to wax lyrical about their respect for him and his products.
Frankly this is the wrong place to conduct an Apple vs anyone else flame war.
If you can't find anything nice to say about Steve Jobs or his legacy I suggest this is not the thread for you.
By all means start another one - this is for those wishing to pay their respects.

Yesterday was a fairly sh1t day all round...
Steve Jobs, Graham Dilley, & Bert Jansche, all in one day, whatever ones personal feelings about their particular achievements I think it's safe to say they all made a positive impact with their lives.
RIP the lot of them, and condolences to their relatives.
Mid 50's is no time to die...:(

Think that if you like. My view is that 'RIP' threads should be respectful. Call it an extension of our Ethos. If this thread were about Bill Gates I'd have no hesitation in moderating it in exactly the same way as I have here, despite my own personal feelings on his legacy.
If you want to start a separate thread on all that is bad about Apple go ahead, but please, no more here.
Nick has got there before me and I support the moderation done so far. This is a thread about respect for a uniquely visionary person, who not only led Apple (twice), but NextStep and was involved in Pixar's success too.
Respect goes to Steve Jobs here and Apple/Microsoft/whatever arguments go elsewhere. Those discussions are interesting too, but not here please.
