What would you treat your beloved techy to if you could and Why

My Beloved Techy MK5g sounds good and is looking resplendent currently clothed in KAB Fluid damper, Isonoe Feet, Timestep external psu, Mike New bearing and Ortofon 2M black, BUT if I could treat my baby to a few toys :eyebrows: I'd add the following:

Mike New Platter (Looks great, doesnt ring, one solid hunk of a platter, erradicates the shouty presentation the techies can have.

Mains R US External psu (Not heard one but - Looks like a good power supply that some thought has gone into, incorporates some type of choke which I've read positive things about, made with top quality components, Kimber mains cable etc

New Funk Carbon fibre Arm (Retains the stock techy fly on the wheel vta adjust which I love anyway, Would allow the use of high end moving coils ie: (See below)

Ortofon Jubilee Moving Coil (Highly rated high end cartridge, bigger brother to the the wonderful Daddie Moving Magnet 2M Black so must be very good indeed but probably too good for the stock arm hence the New Funk Carbon fibre Arm would be added)

All the above I believe would really enhance the sense of realism I currently get, the 'truth' behind each performance, individual parts, really pull you further into each individual track .... None of this is ever cheap but....

I've already done it. My Dynavector arm was a dream component since I was about 16 and my grown up friend/mentor had a Mk. I version in hammer blue finish, which I lusted after. I vowed that one day I would have one of my own and last year I bought one new.

I have absolutely no regrets on account of it a) looking even more stunning in silver and b) sounding better than I could ever have hoped.

I'd save for a real mans Technics, an SP10, and have it properly and extensively refurbished and plonked in the best plinth on the best stand I could find, fitted with a 12" SME V I think. But then, that's not what you asked is it?

I do rather like the Funk platter, as it won't upset the techie's servo's and being lighter than the MN one, shouldn't need a severely beefed up bearing, although I'd be happy to be proved wrong here in a comparison. As to suggestion of a "shouty" quality, wasn't that the regulator jittering around and didn't Timestep make recommendations to sort this years ago, providing measurements to prove it?

...and neither does Mike New's platter, so don't let the dafties out there with commercial agendas convince you differently! ;)

I rather like the Funk platter too, and will be receiving one from Arthur to test in a few weeks, so look out for my thoughts on that :cool:

The mod that Timestep developed was to soften the torque to make it 'sound more like a Linn' (and I quote Dave Cawley here). I had it done to my deck and all was fine until I upgraded the bearing and platter to the Mike New kit. I then suffered a slight speed instability which was particularly noticeable at 45rpm and eventually had to cut the motor dynamics mod out of the circuit, at which point everything ran smoothly again.

The shouty quality was more about the characteristics of the original platter.

I don't know the weight of the Funk platter, so can't answer that question.

The PSU versions are a different matter. The motor dynamics mod was applied directly to the motor control PCB inside the Technics and is not related to regulator mods.

Have already upgraded the tonearm to a Trans-Fi Terminator (unbelievably spectacular, IMHO, together with just about any cart retipped by SoundSmith... a bright spot in a crappy world)

...and I'd actually go through the trouble of building a custom plinth for it; because, I'm slightly touched in the head. Wouldn't need Isonoe feet at that point.

Get a Decca-podded, restored with modern microscanner/paratrace style tip and put it in the terminator. All those Soundsmith specials can be sold to finance "the dream" of mucho vinyl. You'll be so high you'll never come down :lol:

I'd love to add a Decca and an SPU; but, I can't see myself ever giving up the Soundsmith retips. But, I might sell off some of my other Techies to fund more vinyl, if it came down to that, for sure.
