Just brought me a turntable, and yep its a Technics SL 1210 MK2, according to the seller it pretty much brand new and has not been used that much in the past 10 years

Ive added a link to the one Ive brought, I think its a decent price at £255.

I heard one of these decks at Whittlebury last week, al be it it was modded and thought the sound was fantastic. Ive only heard good things about these decks and look forward to hearing it in the system with my valve amp.

I was looking at getting a gyrodeck and still might in the future but felt this deck had a allot to offer as a starter deck, plus I have a very inquisitive 5 year old son and would hate to think what could happen to a gyro !!!

Anyway hopefully in a few days i will have it hooked up and will let you know my thoughts

Nice one mate, recommended up-grades are plenty on the forum, the AOS is the definitive Technics Up-Grade forum, lots of helpful chappies will guide you through the maze to achieve the best from your new purchase.

Ive been messing about trying to put together a decent computer set up mainly because of using spotify frequently but tonight im having a vinyl night and im reminded what a superb deck it is.The music sounds sublime.

i dont think you'll need another deck if you fettle the 1210. The Gyrodeck has a great wide expansive sound stage but this can be achieved just as easily on a 1210 if you plan your upgrades propperly.

Cheers guys for the comments, it was when I was talking to Dave from Mains Cables r us that gave me the idea of getting a Technics, after speaking with him I went and had a listen to a couple of mooded decks through the headphones and thought they sounded superb IMO.

The deck Ive brought should come with a Stanton 500-II cartridge and stylus, as I am new to vinyl and Technics decks I was wondering what members on here tended to use. I dont want to splashing out loads at the moment as Ive just bvrought a Cambridge 640P phono stage as well as the deck.

Also is there a preference to any sort of mat, again Im looking at the cheaper side of the spectrum.

Don't know what your budget is for a cart/stylus or how far you would be prepared to stretch it but, IMHO, the Nagaoka MP30 can't be beaten fo the price, £140 ish I believe. I believe it has other fans on here as well - any comments, anyone?

I would say a better cartridge is in order. I tried a few with the Technics arm, the AT 120e and a few Ortofons. If i was starting from scratch i know i would be happy with the Ortofon 2m red. Nice cart for the money. I think Hamish has one.
The other famed cart for the Technics is the Denon 160. I think Martin used one.
A new cartridge would be a priority over any subtle tweeks IMO.

Hi lee,if funds are tight,i have a shure SC35C cart you can have,which should help you put abit more towards a mat.It's nothing special but should be better than the stanton.This one has a jico replacement stylus with it.

I use them atm and they work better than the stock feet and are cheap.

If you have the standard arm and a Cambridge Audio 640P, try the AT120e/t, in my personal experience it's a very good budget synergistic match, works well with the stock 5mm rubber mat to. As a cheap tweak try a felt mat on top on the rubber mat, adjust VTA accordingly, listen.....

Unscrew the standard feet so the rubber bits are not touching the rubber base, makes a difference, remove the rubber washer from the headshell (correct overhang, standard techy is fine), listen...

Some litz head shell leads are a cheap step up to, more clarity across the board.

I like the Funk Firm Achromat or Inspire Hifi's version.

Anything else costs alot usually.
