Hello

I use a sub in my system. I like what it does but I notice it makes a constant deep hum. It is not loud. It is not related to the volume dialed in. It is inaudible when music plays, but I have tuned into it the rest of the time. Is it common for subs (or other powered systems) to make this noise and am I being a nob for letting it get to me?

Incidentally, I have tried plugging in elsewhere, unattaching from system etc... I conclude it is the sub.

If it is an active sub it coulds be transformer hum from the built in amp, that will be a constant level regardless of volume.

Whatever it is, it ain't right.

I know Andre! Thanks for the link, I shall try different wiring, but suspect it's the sub rather than a ground issue as ithums even if not connected to an amp.

If it's not connected to anything else & it hums - it's the sub for sure ;) Could be hum induced from the power supply through the amplifier & into the driver or it could be the transformer vibrating..

Cheapy transformer in the sub amp probably.

Just for completeness, here's the update: I moved house.

Not specifically to elminate the sub woofer hum, although speaker placement was on my list of priorities for the new pad (how sad is that?).

Upshot. No hum. I can only conclude that my old house had dirty power or something.

In fact, the system sounds utterly different (and much much better) in the new place (my room is bigger and the spendors are farther apart and standing in their own space).

Not sad at all - when moving house the number one priority should always be the hi-fi - Joe Blackadder take note! ;)
