View Full Version : wanted: tonearm cable
hello,
before i splash out on a jelco tonearm cable, i just wondered if anyone might have something as good as or better lying around for similar outlay.
thanks
frank
Hi Frank,
When you say Jelco tonearm cable, do you mean the pink-coloured Neglex stuff Sound Hi-Fi sell, like this (scroll down a little):
http://www.soundhifi.com/jelco.html
If so, I'd avoid it, as it's nothing special. Far better, for less money, is J7's SOFC, shown here, which you can order from his site: http://www.audioorigami.co.uk/AO_Rewires/DSCF1474.jpg
The above cable is truly superb and as good as stuff ten times its price! Hope this helps
Marco.
thanks marco,
yes, that is the cable i am referring to. i am a little confused though because the cable you, and in fact someone else suggested, appears to be listed at £120 which is nearly twice the price of the jelco.
frank
sorry, just had another look at the link, didn't see the £60 cable before, is the difference between the £60 cable and the £120 one simply the cardas connector? i'll drop j7 an e-mail i guess.
thanks!
Hi Frank,
I think the tonearm connector and RCA plugs are improved on the £120 version. It's up to you which cable you go for - either will be superb :)
Marco.
If you have a bit of DIY skill this is good quality cable

I have the AO cable with Cardas plug on it and I agree with Marco that it's superb. Not sure how the phono plugs are modified, but the connector proper seems to be one that Johnnie has customised himself around the cardas plug and I suspect it's the work around that which puts the price up. Why not email him and ask, as he's very approachable I found :)
Otherwise, if you're good at soldering and don't mind some DIY, you can make summat up that's really excellent for not a lot ;) I've also got the little kit above, but still haven't got round to doing anything with it (smack wrists!!!!)
thanks guys,
i e-mailed him and received an explanation, i just have to decide if i want to order the cheaper one or the deluxe model.
cheers :)
Hi Frank,
It's your call, but in my experience, quality plugs make a significant difference, especially in T/T applications, where maintaining the integrity of such a 'delicate' signal is critical...
If you can afford it, go for the deluxe version - I doubt you'll regret it! :)
Marco.
The chap who had mine before me, used it well with an SME IV and loved it. I believe he was going mad with a cable upgrade, for summat really posh and costing loads more...
Marco,
Are you saying the cable in question is better than the Oyaide PA-2075R then matey? Surely not? I have the jelco cable and do agree it is mediocre and not of the same quality as their tone-arms.

Hi David,
Nope, the Oyaide is better than any version of Johnnie's tonearm cables (its the best I've heard so far), but so it should considering how much the relevant cables cost!
However, either of Johnnie's tonearm cables are better than the Neglex. It just depends on how much you want to spend :)
Marco.
There is a new tone-arm cable in town now at Brook Towers.............

it's not exactly what i would call 'similar outlay' to a jelco.
how about a discount? say....80% ??....with free delivery!?

I was in a similiar position awhile back, with limited money hugo (shuggie) sold me a jelco cable, sounds ok to me but i don't have a benchmark to compare it too.
If you get the AO with cardas connector let me know what you think of it.
will do darren, but my only benchmark is an old and cheapish audio technica cable that i have been using until now.

frank

If it betters the Furutech and cost a lot less then its a winner, obviously I would need to trial it first dude? While you are at it you could send me a slate plinth to trial too :lol::lol:

Hi,
Seriously although funds may be limited (we all have wife's and kids and bills) I would stretch the budget and get the best you can as it does make a massive difference to the sound your vinyl spinner makes. If you want to borrow a Jelco cable for a listen pm me and I will post you one to try first, then you will know for certain if it is pants or worth buying. I only have the right angled plug version in stock but you are welcome to it :)
