Hi
I stupidly hooked my linn classik k/lk85 up to a pair of kef Q100's but didn't set the rear switch to bi amp mode, there ensued a terrible noise and my linn now has the error code LO P and a loud humming noise from the speakers :( i'm not sure if the lk85 is also now faulty. Could any of you good hifi people shed some light on this for me and give me the news, bad or hopefully not too bad.

It's quite likely that you have shorted the Classik and the LK against each other and I think the Classik has come off worst.
Are there any fuses that could be checked?

I know its stating the obvious but have you tried unplugging it completly for a few mins and then trying again?

Update, there is smoke coming from somewhere :( :(

Either put your cigarette out or turn it off.
Sounds like something has gone wrong with the output transistors or the power supply. If it is smoking and smells bad then it'll need looking at by someone qualified enough to be poking around in that sort of thing.

smoke is not a good sign. I think unless you have an idea of what you are doing it's probably going to need to be sent for repair.
Can you identify which unit has smoke coming from it?

Unfortunately, it's bad news - smoke means that it is definitely broken and will have to be repaired. Don't use it till it has been fixed.

Smoke is hifi puke. Your amp is sick. You need to consult a specialist.

Thanks for all the help, i have tried the other components ie: lk85 power amp and kef speakers and they are fine. Would i be right in thinking that because i had the speakers set for single wire connection that the signal has maybe come from the power amp, through the speakers and then into the classik and damaged something??

When you have it set for bi-amp the amp in the Classik and the LK drive seperate halves of the speakers. If you don't have it set then the output of both amps are connected together and have a bit of a fight to see who is the most powerful. The Classik lost, badly.
You know, this is the first time I've ever come across someone connecting two amps to one pair of speakers in this manner. Unfortunately, smoke means that something inside the amp has fried, and modern transistor amps like your Linn are designed to protect themselves rather than fry; however, you have managed to overcome the amps protection. If there was smoke, I would expect some component, or components, to look quite obviously damaged/burnt.
Sounds like the Classik has driven the (silent) output of the LK85 - it has effectively driven a near short circuit.
I thought these integrated amps used a chip power amp module and those have short circuit protection. If not and the amp uses a discrete power amp circuit, it will likely need new output and driver transistors and a handful of resistors replacing.
I also thought it had short circuit protection, perhaps it wasn't designed to be quite as protective as this.

Yes the are some burnt components, i'm absolutely devastated, how could i have been so stupid :( :(

Hopefully it's just burnt resistors. You'll probably find quite a few people here will have managed to bugger something up accidentally. I may have done once or twice.
Let us know how it goes with the repair.

Expect a eye watering bill unless the amp is under guarantee. Engineers normally replace the whole output and driver stage. Then you have the burnt out bias resistors that needs replacing. If they have also caused charcoal marks on the PCB that would be an additional headache. After replacing the parts the amp needs recalibrating for bias offset voltage and bias current.
Two hours labour plus parts is my minimum estimate, which is unlikely to come in at less than £200.

All the workshops I know who could have helped you out have closed down in recent years. But there are a number of persons and companies frequently mentioned by other members on the forum. No doubt someone will point you in the right direction before the weekend has passed :).

I have an update on this, we have managed to get a hold of another classik which has a faulty transformer but we believe that the main pc board is ok, however it is a little older than the one which i managed to damage and although it looks the same on closer inspection some of the components look slightly different. Would there be a problem if we switched the boards?

Smoke for amps is not good- all the music has gone away. Blown caps or resistors probably. Output transistors could have been damaged too if there was a short circuit. Some amps have crowbar protection but it may not have reacted in time.

You should be able to take the transformer out of one and try it in the other. If you know someone with a bit of electrical experience and maybe a multi meter thatmay be the way to go. Good luck.
If you have some pics of the labels of both transformers someone could advise you.
