Wanted! Recommendations for AVANTE Garde artists

I'm planning a trip to Leeds tomorrow for some new Vinyl and I fancied maybe getting some Avante Garde genre of music. I would welcome recommendations for artists, I'm a complete newbie so I'm open to suggestions... Thanks :cool:

Might not be your cup of tea, but having bought the one CD i had to have the lot... I cannot say that about any other artist ;)

You could do a lot worse than Frank Zappa but the sheer size of his catalogue can be a bit daunting.

You might like to try a little Ornette Coleman.
Maybe 'Dancing In Your Head', 'Virgin Beauty' or the album he did with Pat Metheny - 'Song X'.
'Spy vs Spy' by John Zorn, which is actually comprised of Coleman compositions but played rather brutally loud & fast.
How about some Armenian folk/rock/jazz type stuff? - Arto Tuncboyaciyan's albums 'Serart' or 'Aile Muhabbeti'
Maybe Derek Bailey's guitar pinging, clanking and banging - pretty challenging & not my cuppa tea, but you might like to try something by groups he was in like Company or the Spontaneous Music Ensemble.

Check out anything by Scott Walker from 'Tilt' (1996) onwards...certainly ticks the boxes ;)

Avant Garde for me would be 'Unorthodox Behaviour' by Brand X especially on vinyl. Just listen to those drums and revel in that recording quality.

I recommend Mahavishnu Orchestra: 'The Inner Mounting Flame', 'Birds Of Fire' simular to what Shaun recommended above .. You could try mid 70's Gong ie: 'Shamal', 'Gazuse' you should be able to pick this stuff up easy

Even if I'm late on this one but want still to recommend Art Ensemble of Chigago for you to try out. Some of their stuff is really ..hmm.. interesting ;) but some with a tad more trad elements there is really marvellous. E.g. the B-side of album Full Force is great where Jan Garbarek really shines with tenor sax..

I agree, Art Ensemble of Chicago is a truly great band. This album is also very highly recommended, also available on vinyl:
