Technics SL-10 rework

heres a little thread about my sl-10, ebay find a few months back, cost a little over 125, which was ok, when i recieved it, it was more heavily knocked about than i first thought.

With lots of marks, and most annoyingly a broken catch that meant the lid wouldnt close properly. u can see its sitting proud on the left hand side.
The original 310mc cart had unfortunatley been damaged with a broken needle, but i had sourced a new old stock 310mc from the usa, which was alot more than the table itself.

Hooking it up an ortofon OMP10 it did play however, and didnt sound to bad considering, it wouldnt get to the end of the record however, which pointed to a worn arm drive belt. other than that here's what it looked like.

ordered up a new drive belt and electrolytics for both the main pcb and the arm control board, nothing fancy, just nichicon series.
also some vw satin silver paint and a some sundries like isopropyl alcohol and some 400grit wet and dry.

had to make a mold for the latch assembley as its so small i cast it in two stages with latex forming the two halfs and a Polyurethane casting resin, with some black paint to spray up the finsihed part, as i ddint have a suitable dye.

will post the recap next, and reassembley.

I have a Technics Sl-10 that stopped working.

The platter spins when I push the button under the lid.
The tonearm doesn't move when I push the start or the cueing button.

I have been told there is a belt under the lid that controls the tonearm.
I have looked at the schematics and it would appear to be a complicated repair.

Looks rather familiar - same motor as the 1210, similar board design (if looking more cheaply put together), same control IC..

Is the bearing the same but with a thread and nut to hold the platter?

This was a great performing and sounding deck at the time and could easily better an average LP12 if sited correctly.

Don't know how I missed this thread originally! I've a couple of Technics parallel trackers - SL7 (LP-sleeve sized like the SL10 but without the SUT), and its full sized equivalent, now Vantage-tricked-out, SL-QL1. Both make amazing music. Maximum kudos, Liam, for the restoration and great pictures.

Here are mine for the linear-tracker nuts out there . .

The SL7 could sound a bit relentless, but I think it was the supplied cartridge. The mat change looks interesting too, but are there the original cut-outs for the sensors - not an issue if you don't play 7" singles on it?

Hi Dave. No, no cutouts for the sensors on the QL1. So aside from starting a 12", and stopping at the end its a manual deck now. You have to be careful not to brush the start button with the power on as it'll lower the arm on the platter - but that's not really a problem as I'm the only one using it :eyebrows:.

The change from a rubber mat focussed the sound more and I feel there's a tad more depth to it as well. It certainly upped the bling quotient though :lol:.

Hi Andy. I was quite impressed with the platforms. The Silent Stage 4 under the QL1 was supplied with three different spacer sets so you can "tune it in". TBH I couldn't hear any repeatable difference! But I had got Vantage to put their feet on the QL1, and these, as others have said, are very good for the price (£30?). Between them, the feet and the platform do a good job. The Vantage feet are also on the SL7, but are smaller versions and are quite recessed, so this is like a car with lowered suspension . . :lol: (The black feet you can see under the SL7 are the sorbothane ones of the platform).

Stuart at SRM/Tech was great to deal with too, and was happy to do the bespoke platform for the little SL7.
