View Full Version : The Chav. his wife, their system and ...... X-Factor

Are the legions of CHAVS and associated thickies who avidly watch X-Factor and other no-need-to-think TV shows capable of appreciating ‘demanding’ music and therefore by implication could they derive ANY benefit (other than blinging their way around Asda) in owning a decent system?

And no, I’m not implying that everyone who watches X-factor is a near moron. But …………

Well we've done this one before, or similar... I personally think X-factor is a great entertainment show, accepting of course it is rather contrived and crass. There have been some great voices discovered, though sadly mostly ruined by their management/record companies...

I appreciate I am in a minority on here being both a thickie and a chav, and can only dream of attaining the intellectual and stylistic heights of the rest of the exulted membership of this forum. ;)

Quite so. But didn't answer the original question though does it?

PS

Are you really a CHAV? Surely not?

All music is demanding, only elitist, effete pricks would think otherwise. The question you asked is no better than the chav who asks, "what you listening to that poofta classical music for , you want to enjoy some..."

Quite so. But didn't answer the original question though does it?

Well, no - I guess not - but to do so I would have to accept that the majority of people who watch X-factor are as you describe. My Mum & Dad love it, for instance - both highly educated intelligent people, although I'm not sure about my dad's dress sense or dancing abilities sometimes. He drives a Golf and shops in Waitrose, so not sure if he is a full-blown Chav, though.

I've personally never correlated bad dress sense or choice of supermarket with one's ability to appreciate any type of music, demanding or not, or the likelihood they would enjoy a decent hifi system or not.

I'm wondering what the interest is, Howard - are you thinking of taking an advertising slot during X-factor, or developing a Burberry check finish range of hifi? ;)

Are you really a CHAV? Surely not?

I suspect Chavness is in the eye of the beholder, and it is probably not possible to know if oneself is a chav - though I'm sure many people would think my choice of a modern house with lilac curtains, faux-posh car and a 4 burner gas barbeque is the epitome of chav!

My interest is I assure you very innocent. I thought that the majority of threads - including some of those started by me - looked boring. My provocative thread header was designed to liven things up a bit. And Pavlovian-like, it sure did. Job done.

I despise this show with a passion but have a guilty secret in that I have never watched a single episode, so perhaps I'm not qualified to hold such a view. Saturday night has for many years been the worst night for viewing on the main channels IMO, but recently saved by the likes of The Killing, Wallander and Spiral.

I never watch any soaps, reality shows or anything resembling them, just not my thang :(

Thank you. I'm relieved to know that I'm not alone.

Whatever a "Chav" is, there are significantly more people who think Badges are to be aspired to as that is what society broadly agrees to, eg Bose. This particular forum is a enthusiastic social minority unimpresed by HD 3D phoneBling as the latest must-have.

X-Factor?
Much of the TV shows peddled today are just the latest iteration of the same commercial formulae that brought Hughie Green and the Sun to prominence way back when, only now with a bit more flash and contrivance than cardboard stars and giitter pasted on the back wall of the set. New smoke and mirrors, good guy, bad guy, slicker manipulation, but same tat....
Newspaper headlines on the latest Corrie shock/horror highlighted the absurdity of the obsession back in the eighties, but now these genres occupy several press pages to satiate those feeling withdrawal symptoms from their alternate lives.

For many, this pap is an addiction, for some an obsession, but for the few it is a road to fame and riches, guaranteed in the case of presenters by a bank of PR and marketing experts, and paid for by the addicts.
For some it is only background noise, and stranger still for some it is entertainment whilst ironing (a fascinating visual skills combination I have never undesrtood).
For me it is a reason to change input to HDMI2, and select music, video, internet or off.

Leave the Chav's in peace, as many are still trying to spell Burberry

It means you can't run your eyes across their shelves of CDs or LPs and spot the Celine Dion albums!

Alex_UK
27-09-2011, 12:45
I'm not sure why "we" want to make such judgements, anyway... "it's ok, he's not a Chav, he likes 42 different genres of music across 5,000 CDs including Gregorian Chant and Britney Spears." And at what point does one slip back into Chavdom? ;)

I know I'm being flippant, as the conversation has moved on to if "someone" is serious about their music - I'm not sure this is a fair barometer for that either, though... For instance, is "someone" who only likes Prog Rock pre 1974 not serious about their music...? And really, who is ANYONE to judge anyone else, based on their musical tastes, TV tastes, choice of checked clothing - or otherwise...

What's happened to the usual tolerance and "live and let live" just recently...?

MartinT
27-09-2011, 12:53
I don't think it's about judgement, Alex. Howard's OP question was concerned with people who are serious about music. The simplistic yardstick of person A who has a £20k hi-fi system and a collection of 30 CDs versus person B who has a £500 hi-fi system and a collection of 1000 CDs. No-one is talking about what music they have, although I did use 'range' in my response and perhaps, in hindsight, that isn't relevant either.

Well this is an innocent but provocative post .. so .. what do you guys think about this point of view ..

The widespread use of the "chav" stereotype has come in for some criticism. Some argue that it amounts to simple snobbery and elitism. Critics of the term have argued that its users are "neo-snobs", and that its increasing popularity raises questions about how British society deals with social mobility (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_mobility) and class.
In a February 2005 article in The Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Times), Julie Burchill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julie_Burchill) argued that use of the word is a form of "social racism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism)", and that such "sneering" reveals more about the shortcomings of the "chav-haters" than those of their supposed victims. The writer John Harris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Harris_(critic)) argued along similar lines in a 2007 article in The Guardian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guardian).

As to whether or not a chav(ette) could appreciate "demanding" music ... and would derive any benefit from owning a decent sysytem depends entirely on whether or not your appreciation and enjoyment of chav type music could be enhanced by a good system .. and by extension it would appear that chav type music is assumed NOT to be demanding ... To me it is EXTREMELY demanding .. so much so that I have to leave it's vicinity in very short order indeed ,,,,,,, no matter what system it may be being played on .. :lolsign:

Sloppy thinkers have received an inconvenient and unpalatable wake-up call that the CHAV barbarians are at the gate. That crass stupidity trumps intellect. That crooked politicians serve on 25% of their already far too lenient prison sentences, and more. Will that do for starters?

As for me, I now seriously wonder why I uphold the law. Why buy when you can steal and get a first-rate 'screaming leftie' barrister (at taxpayer cost) to claim in court that it’s only because the defendant didn’t get enough Corn Flakes / teddies / X-Factor when they were growing up!

They probably go on to claim that society is being grossly unfair to their client because on the one hand ‘society’ claims that CHAVs lack initiative and yet by running off with someone else’s’ 40” TV they quite clearly are demonstrating initiative – and fitness too!

I’m very carefully studying the current definitions of Chav because I’ve got a horrible feeling I might fit right in on musical taste alone. Still, at least I’ve got a musical taste.
(Desperately counting my files now) What do I need to not be “Chaved orf”by my peers, 2000 albums of impeccable taste?
Ooops fail.
I’ve got well over the quantity requires but most of its pop and we just know that these fine gentlemen of discerning taste who post here don’t consider pop to be valid music.

Faulty logic in part#1 of your reply I suggest. If the criteria for passive acceptance of something is axiomatically linked to how widespread it is then for example, why try to treat cancer if 1 in 3 of the UK population will get it at some point? On the other hand, maybe you were having a larf?

Re point #2 though, you might well be onto something.

Indeed Howard I was having a bit of a 'larf'...but there is some truth in it, unfortunately the BBC seem to be of that opinion, and would appear feel that their mandate requires them to compete for the popular market, rather than providing a benchmark to aspire to.

You'll have to excuse me here as I'm not aware which channel X-Factor is on , but if it's on ITV then I'm sure there's a BBC equivalent. Surely there's enough of this crud on commercial channels already without the BBC having to waste the licence money competing for that market. :)

Okay, okay - let's try to get the vocabulary right. In my 'manor' just North of Tottenham and cheek by slashed jowl with Edmonton N18 (only 2 stabbings last month) and South of Ponders End, CHAV as is commonly understood by the acronym is defined as follows:

CH as in ‘Council Housed’
AV as in ‘and violent’

Please note both the subtlety and yet crucial nature of the word ‘and’. By its careful and thoughtful application it demonstrates that merely being a Council tenant one isn’t automatically violent. In some ‘sink estates’ it possibly might. In other estates, possibly not.

Musical appreciation doesn’t, in the rather tight definition play any part in defining Norf Lundun CHAVishness.

However one would have to be as thick as the stereotypical (no pun intended) CHAV not to realise that it could be argued that:

(a) buying every thickie celebrity magazine +
(b) thinking that the crap in (a) is of any importance +
c) owning a white BMW X5 and/or a blinged-up Range Rover +
d) any vehicle with 3-spoke alloys plus a Reg plate in a typeface designed to confuse and/or deceive +
e) that giving one’s ‘bird’ a “right kickin” every now and then is good for their self respect ....

is, indeed, a series of useful litmus tests.

I thing the word was originally an abbreviated form of the geordie term 'Charver' (a bit of a rougue/scallywag in polite terms), which has been around for a while, and was in common use up north when I was growing up...Chav probably has a life of it's own now...

Well hush my mouth mama. I've drifted off my own thread.

It was, after all seeking lightheartedly to catalyze a discussion between CHAVs and musical appreciation. So anyway ….. hoping to pull this back on track, my suggestion for A if not THE definitive MUSICAL litmus test of the degree of apparent or indeed latent CHAVishness in a person might be this:

If the person under scrutiny prefers the dreadful mangling of “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney ‘Nostrils’ Houston to the poignant original by Dolly Parton then my belief is that they are indeed part and parcel of the CHAV underclass. And that they probably listen via Linn Saras too!

Over and out

You cheeky git... gonna move to a council house, buy a Range Rover and "bling it up" just so I can run you over at Scalford next year!

Can one enjoy both QI and The X-Factor without being dubbed a chav or otherwise?

I'm confused, is this thread a 'spot the Daily Mail reader' competition?

What's the prize, the complete works of Wagner wrapped in a burberry scarf?

Yes. All Daily Mail readers watch the X-Factor. They're outing themselves one by one.

I thought that QI was a Question Time run along X-Factor guidelines. That same repetative music on QI does my head in.

Going off t/v fast, even F1 looks like a Simon Coweeone production. Can't believe Bernie needs the money, so it must be "ego" selling to SKY and BBC. Even some of the nature progs look like they have been put through Hollywood just to accentuate the blood and guts.

Is there anything worth watching on the box now? I can't remember.

Now it's official - X-Factor really does mess with your head:

It's the Telegraph so be warned - some of the comments pull no punches...

Look, modern society NEEDS the chavs, because as everyone is seeming to be doing their level best to climb up the slippery pole of consumerism, capitalism and faux elitism, yet never reaching the top echelons of that pole, it is good to look down from where they all began from and how far up they have reached and be proud of where they are :mental:

As a parallel explanation of this malaise, we NEED ugly people, otherwise the "beautiful" people would have nothing to be compared with so their beauty value would otherwise be rendered worthless without the ugly ones

Yeah everything is relative. Imagine Thomas Edison trying out his first phonograph, hearing it and thinking "Nah, it's rubbish, the sound is not transparent/tuneful enough - better bin that idea".

They aren't afraid to report utter bollocks either.

I particularly like the fact that their 'expert' is described as being the part-time girlfriend of Lord Snowdon. Next week Coleen Rooney comments on the best methods for DIY trepanation!

Yes, you've missed two episodes already (possibly three by the time you read this).

Both episodes are still on iPlayer and sadly this series is to be the last.

I really don't know what the BBC are playing at, they've closed down two of their premier drama series over the last year, Silent Witness and Waking the dead, now Spooks is for the chop too, it makes no sense.

I don't watch a lot of TV, mainly documentaries, Top Gear and F1 (which we lose to Sky for the 2012 season onwards :steam:), I guess I'll be watching a lot less next year. They are even cutting back on Dr Who

I don't watch too much TV at all .. but I was mortified when they killed off Roz .... has she shown up in anything else yet .. ? ( I cant remember the dear actresses real name ) .. :)

Ah yes, Hermione Norris is well missed. The current incumbent is rather too glamorous to be believable, whereas Roz was a great character.
