Tests have shown that Neutrinos travel faster than the speed of light.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-15017484

Now they're trying to prove their results wrong before declaring it scientific fact.

Mind-blowing stuff :stalks:

Sure is. If it's correct it will turn physics on it's head.

Which it should be to as we have nothing unifying general relativity & quantum theory

Light has jitter, Neutrinos no jitter?

Well science must be coming on in leaps & bounds, i'm sure it wasn't so long ago that they were still working out a way of detecting Neutrinos, let alone firing a beam of them through the earth & picking up the results

Anyone ever read Timescape by Gregory Benford?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timescape

I remember reading this book when it first came out in the UK in the early 80s and having my mind blown by the possibility of sending a message back in time using Neutrinos. All Sci-fi up until now. Exciting times if this new discovery turns out to be true.

Yes read it Tony. I like his books.

Aye good stuff. Peter Hamilton's not too shabby either!

I'm reading Stephen Baxter - Exultant at the moment, another good sci fi author...

I wish there was certain things i could change about the past, but best not go there :eyebrows:

Actually no, i like my life even though it's not the best ;) If i changed the past then who knows where i'd be now

Have you read Coalescent?

Have you read Coalescent?
Yes, Exultant is #2 in the destiny's children series. I'll probably get Trancendent & Resplendent as this is also quite good...

Coalescent was a cracker though, no two ways about it ;)

For a minute there Ali i thought you were going to bring up the ex copper blowing up the lab where they were going to make an artificial black hole by slowing light down ;)

Well light can be slowed alright (http://jupiterscientific.org/sciinfo/slowlight.html) as you possibly know already...

Haha aye, seen that before. interesting stuff.

Call me a 'faster than light denier' but the thing I have a problem with is how they identified that neutrino 'A' spotted in Geneva was the very same neutrino 'A' entering Gran Sasso

Do neutrino's have RFI tags these days?!

Tony Moore

Peter F Hamilton - yes, fantasic. Waiting eagerly for "Great North Road".

Stephen Baxter brilliant.

Also Robert L Forward, I seem to remember a very thought provoking novel about an alien lifeform living on a neutron star that live life at millions of times the speed of humans and can only move in two directions because of the magnetic field lines. Dragon's Egg I think it was called. We send a probe to communicate with them, pass on knowledge and they surpass us very quickly due to the difference in the progression of time due to the gravity.

Hi Nick, i should imagine they sent a stream of them which could be identified. I know what you are saying though as these things will pass through the planet :eyebrows: They'd definately need to be sure that what was received were the Neutrinos that were transmitted.

Some kind of encoded stream springs to mind :)

The neutrinos were aimed at the detectors in Italy by CERN.

It would take a few years longer to read each post, unless you have a machine lying around you can spare!
