Being taken to see Alexander O'Neil tonight in Middlesbrough.
Will report back what it was like.
Brit Floyd...utter complete crap!
I used to be a big fan of The Australian Pink Floyd Show and saw them countless times, then they split in half and Brit Floyd was one half with some very competent musicians. First time I saw them was the last and I walked out half way through . . . so it seems they have not improved!
This year has been a bit leaner than normal as I'm trying to save some money!
So far I have seen the following during 2014;
Danny George Wilson
Neal Halstead
Peter Bruntnell
Bill Callahan
The Deep Dark Woods
Hatful of Rain
Austin Lucas
Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo
Red Sky July
Beth Nielsen Chapman
The Lone Bellow
Martina McBride
Dierks Bentley
Dixie Chicks
Zac Brown Band
Best act so far from that lot (and by some margin) was The Lone Bellow and the most disappointing, Martina McBride.

Was taken to see Alexander O'Neil last night at the TFM Soundworks Venue in Middelsbrough
Enjoyed my self greatly, good band and backing, Alex still has a great voice and obviously was enjoying himself, and it showed.
The venue has it's limitations for the sound, but didn't stop my enjoyment of the gig.
Next gigs I'm going to...
Kate Bush - on my birthday
Lady Gaga - October in Glasgow
Unless I manage to get to see Stacey Kent in the interim... Need to do my sums.

Austin Lucas was certainly my most memorable 20 minutes of music (?) this year. Didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
I see he's playing in Brighton on Saturday night. For anyone going to Brighton Audio '14, he'll certainly liven up your weekend.
Goldfrapp - Reading Hexagon
I was intrigued as to whether Alison Goldfrapp's soaring, seductive, voice would translate to live performance. As it turned out, she can really deliver, with power and amazing vocal range. Madonna, eat your heart out. The first half consisted of several songs from her new album Tales of Us and the second half some storming numbers from her back catalogue. She had us all up and dancing by the end. Will and her backing group were uniformly excellent and the Hexagon sound less unpleasant than many venues.
The Parisian support band, We Were Evergreen, were an interesting mix of influences, primarily Alt-J and the Cocteau Twins. I shall check out their forthcoming album.
The obligatory fuzzy photo...

Hi Martin,
I can concour with yourself as I saw Goldfrapp last week at Symphony hall Brum where the acoustics are very good indeed and suited her set. It was her first Gig on her tour and she was a bit nervous but great performance and tight band.
Next up - London grammar at the Civic Wolves. Hope Hannahs vocals last till then:)

Ooh, nice. Enjoy that one too!
Saw Goldfrapp as well but at the Colston Hall, Bristol on 1.4.14 and she was sublime. Brilliant voice, fantastic band and a great, well put together set.

Going to see EPMD tonight at Gorilla in Manchester. Legendary Hip Hop...
24 Pesos at the 606 club Chelsea last Monday
Never heard of them prior to this, but a cracking British blues band with a world class guitarist, great night
28.4. Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited 2014 World Tour
Nokia Concert Hall, Tallinn
New concert hall with good acoustics, about 1200 people.
Full 2.5 hours of Genesis. Like he said "I'm happy that people still want to hear these old songs".
Ian Anderson at Liverpool Phil, Ian is a phenomenon, to write another new album (and very good it is too) at his age and perform as well as he does.
The same line up and format for TAAB 2 where Ian shares some of the vocals with the young actor Ryan O'Donnell also there is a bit of theatre going on.
The new album is only 40 mins long so the second half was a Jethro Tull through the years gig.
Excellent evening, if you like Tull/IA.
Cheltenham Jazz fesival: This was on over the bank holiday weekend, held at the Montpellier Gardens in the town centre. Some great artists playing, a free stage and plenty of food stalls including the Fabulous Baker Boys' Hobbs Bakery stall. Next to the free stage area was a great opportunity to buy some recent vinyl courtesy of Rise records. Loads of families with young children attended. For me, the highlight wasn't so much the headline artists (although they were fabulous) but some of the free bands including a youth swing band. The standard of musicianship from some of these up and coming youngsters was truly exceptional.
Natalie Merchant
Milton Court Concert Hall - 10th May 2014
London
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/greatgig/folder2_zpsaff05dcc.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/greatgig/media/folder2_zpsaff05dcc.jpg.html)
An astonishingly good night, full of wit, emotion, superb musicianship and exceptional sound in a world-class 600 seat acoustically designed concert hall from Arup Acoustics. I don't really take pictures or videos at concerts and Milton Court is most definitely not the sort of place it would be encouraged, but I took the above just before the show. Once under-way we had Natalie out front, a 4 piece string section to the right, upright/electric bass, drums, acoustic/electric guitar and piano/accordion.
Natalie treated us to around 130 minutes of pure class with offerings from her catalogue going back to Tiger Lily and 10,000 Maniacs. The room was literally spell bound for the entire show and Natalie's voice often sent shivers down my spine - it is still as haunting and powerful as it ever was. The highlights for me we Ladybird, Giving Up Everything and Lulu from her new album, as well as The Gulf of Araby sung with the writer Katell Keineg and we also had Beloved Wife, Carnival, Wonder, She Devil and she finished with Kind & Generous which was a very fitting end and saw the whole house on its feet. Natalie is really quite a wit too, which I wasn't aware of and also very animated on stage - a truly professional performer and a few lyric mishaps were dealt with admirably a dose of humour.
An outstanding night and this was sold out from the moment it went on sale, but Natalie was concerned that the rear circle stage seats were empty having not been made available for sale. She said lets see if we can open those up for tomorrow night and I just checked and they have gone on sale for only £15.00! So if you fancy a Sunday evening of class in the company of Natalie Merchant and some very fine musicians . . . . http://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event-detail.asp?ID=16150
They won't last long though ;)
The show stared around 7.45 (no support and listed as 7.30 start) and we were out just before 10.00pm

Friday night we were at Backstage at the Green Hotel in Kinross to see Kevin Montgomery, good gig but very disappointing turnout even in a small venue, still it gave everyone a chance to chat to Kevin and he changed his intended set to a play it as you feel, recommended if you get a chance to see him near you.

I went to see Prince on Thursday at the LG Arena in Birmingham.
It was unbelievable, the guy is a born showman, he is right up there with the guitar greats, and played for over 2 and a half hours straight!
Great atmosphere, and even though he didn't play quite a few of my favourites (Sexy MF, Get Off, Cream, Paisley Park, Darling Nikki etc) he put a great setlist together that I couldn't really complain.
I'm seriously contemplating going to see him again on Monday if I can get tickets.
Here is the setlist:
Funknroll
Take Me With U
Raspberry Beret
U Got the Look
Musicology
Kiss
Empty Room
Let's Go Crazy

I'd love to see Prince live. I saw Emily Barker at King's Place in February (astounding sounding small venue) and Prince did a surprise show there the night before! There were according to Emily purple feathers still lying around.

I agree with that. One of the best guitar players I've ever seen live.
A very good week in parts;
Emmylou Harris on Sunday in London where I met and had a chat with Robert Plant, who was standing right outside the door to the hall all by himself waiting for someone inside! What a nice bloke, very down to earth and not up his arse at all. Managed to grab an autograph too. Emmylou was sublime, what a graceful lady.
Sam Baker in Basingstoke on Wednesday - superb performance from a most compelling singer/songwriter.
Madeleine Peyroux in Salisbury last night . . . . .

. . . dreadful. I endured 45 mins before walking out. I would have left earlier but as I was on the front row and right in front of her, it was tricky!
I have Judie Tzuke next week, which I am really looking forward to, not seen her for many years :)

Joanne Shaw Taylor - The Bowery District, Reading 13.6.14

Went to Mandela Hall Belfast last night to see Midlake. This is the second time I have seen them live, the first time being a couple of months ago in Vicar Street Dublin. For those who don't know them they are a kind of folk rock band from Denton, Texas and I have previously nominated their album 'The trials of Van Occupanther' in album of the week. Anyway they are bloody fantastic live as they are on disk. If you get the chance I strongly advise you to go and see them!

Union Chapel - Friday 15th August
Neko Case
Superb show last night at a sold out Union Chapel in London, Neko Case really is her own woman that's for sure. We got around 90 minutes of classic NC with songs from throughout her back catalogue, as well as new stuff. Her vocal harmonies with Kelly Hogan were outstanding as were her very tight and talented 5 piece band. Neko was the epitome of 'lady casual' wearing just leggings, a plain T and went barefoot. But to be honest she has so much talent, she doesn't need the frippery of any trimmings.
Hat's off to Union Chapel too, as despite the PA going down completely during the afternoon, they managed to ship and entire new rig in from Brixton which arrived around 6.00, set that up, do a sound check for Neko and the support, organise the crowd quite imaginatively to both keep them happy and get them in quick and then still start the show at 8.15 for the support and get Neko on at 9.00 - no mean feat I can tell you and all handled with lots of smiles - London's best music venue indeed, good job guys :)

Stornoway at the Roundhouse on Wednesday featuring material from their new album... kind of takes on a Simon & Garfunkel meets REM sound. Very melodic with smart lyrics. But the live sound... the bass was so over the top and unmodulated that one really had to work hard to hear the music. The album, on the 4AD label, has better production values.

Recently voted best venue in London and it really is superb and worth a 2 hour drive and hour on the tube for me! They have some really great music there, get yourself on the mailing list.

The atmosphere and acoustics are fantastic, but it is a working church so no allocated seats in the (hard) church pews, take a cushion if you have a tender backside and you need to get there early if you want to be at the front, but to be honest the whole venue is great ;)

Last night Viv and I were invited to see Roger Chapman at the Under The Bridge club at Stamford Bridge the Chelsea FC. ground. He was superb a really great 90 minute set of classic tunes. My good mate Steve, who used to be my engineer back in the day was doing the sound (he does a lot of work with Roger including a couple of really great albums). Steve showed me round the sound system in the venue, which I had heard about but not seen. The space is covered by multiple groups of speakers, even the booths have their own small arrays and these are all time and phase aligned so where ever you are in the venue the sound is always good. Had a really good time, must play some Chappo on the next show.
Kate Bush - Before The Dawn
Hammersmith Apollo, tonight (ok last night now)
Just beautiful and stunning.
David Sanborn Trio at Ronnie Scott's last Thursday, featuring David Sanborn on the Alto, Joey Di Francesco on the Hammond, and Bryon Landham on Drums.
Quite a fantastic set - Joey Di Francesco must the be the world's best Hammond B2 player - quite astonishing!. There was a bit where he was playing the bass line on the keyboard at the same time as soloing on the trumpet. The gig took a funny turn when the Hammond took a dive, and David Sanborn and the rest of the band had to improvise a standup routine while it was fixed.
Some amazing playing and music too. Love Ronnie Scotts - always have a great evening there.
Cheers,
Alex

Last night was one of the greater nights of my young life. I had the pleasure to see Mastodon and Gojira in concert. Both were such amazing acts and put on an amazing show. Afterwards, I got to meet Gojira's drummer, Mario Duplantier, who was really the nicest and coolest chap I've ever met. I definitely have more respect for this group and my adoration for their music has intensely grown. Definitely would love to see them perform again.
Cheers,
Chris.
Went to 'Simple Things' festival in Bristol Oct 24th/25th...one of these new fangled multi venue city festivals, a la The Great Escape or Camden Crawl
Friday night was Caribou @ Motion, the boy's gone too dance orientated for me with his latest album, still entertaining but not a patch on Andora/Swim tours...
Saturday was the main event in Colston hall, and various other venues around the city...my first real visit to Bristol, and what a lovely city it is too.
All watched from the front centre balcony, right between the speakers...
Hidden Orchestra - full line up (including the trumpeter, who seems to be a bit unreliable), excellent as always
Nightmares On Wax - absolutely shockingly poor, only one of the original lineup left...and he needs to pack it in too
Liars - Excellent set from their last 2 albums, by this time the room was full, and the sound quality excellent
Mogwai - They never let me down, incredible power, and a wealth of a back catalogue to draw from, 'We're No Here' was epic (see the crappy attached photo for a bit of an idea...unfortunately it won't upload!!!)
That wound up at 1am, then it was off to see the Haxan Cloak at a venue called the lantern, really impressive set, thunderous electronic soundscapes...the girls in our group were fighting to sit on the bass bins...not sure why! ;)
Then things get a little hazy, I'm assured I also caught some of DJ Harvey in a venue called the firestation, but having been at it since lunchtime I frankly can't remember, and going by reports I wouldn't have enjoyed his New York house anyway...
Anyway it looks as if 'Simple Things' are stepping into the void left by the demise of ATP, so keep you eyes open...
P.S. The tickets for the main day were only £34, and the Friday night was £17...now that's value for money :)
Last Friday - The Specials in Nottingham
Tonight. - Difford & Tilbrook in Northampton
Tomorrow. - Jamie T in Nottingham.
I'm getting too old for all this!

Joan Armatrading concert :)
My review of the evening
Arrived at 19.30, 19.35 the warm up artists played about 7 tracks, both were local singer songwriter musicians one from Basildon the other from Billericay, Sorry cant remember the names.
Short interlude from 20.15 until 20.30.
Then the one and only Joan Armatrading came on stage to a standing ovation and applause that must have lasted 3 minutes.
Joan has great audience interaction and is also quit funny
Joan must have used at least 7 different guitars including a 12-string model, she also played live keyboard for the first time since 1976
The set list was a good mix of classic and modern tracks
The classics included

I would like to say Thank You Joan for the last 40 years of music :)

Fri 7th Nov, Pangbourne Working Mens Club - An Evening with John Otway - A talk on his life in the music business, highly amusing.

Muse live gig at the Den Teignmouth (Devon) 2009
This is Muse's home town. My daughter bought tickets for my wife and me as a birthday present to me. What a present! Muse were absolutely electric. I find their songs so melodic, dramatic and absolutely thoroughbred headbanging Rock - and this is to an old rocker whose seen live Deep Purple, Blackfoot, Nazareth, UFO, Rainbow, Eric Clapton etc.. Muse know how to do large open air gigs and I think in some certain quarters abroad they regard Muse as the best export from UK since The Beatles.

Saw the '2Cellos' last night. Fantastic concert that fully justifies the outlay of seeing top professionals live. I swear the theatre itself was rocking when they got to the AC/DC and similar stuff with an added drummer (also fantastic) though I personally was rather mesmerised by the slower, simpler renditions with Luka and Stjepan only playing. No wonder Elton had them supporting him on tour!:D
Jesus and Mary Chain @ Brighton Dome. They played the whole Psychocandy album plus some other tunes. Nice and loud, but not as thrilling as seeing them in a small club in Aberdeen back in the 80's.
Had a very pleasant afternoon with Del, in Wrexham library listening to a superb (free - as in it cost nothing) performance of a violin and piano duo, playing Mozart’s Violin Sonata No32, K.454, and Franck’s Sonata in A Major, with Elizabeth Lamberton (on violin) and Ron Abramski (on piano), who are both very talented young musicians.
Then afterwards, a relaxing and superb lunch at a local country pub: http://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/crossfoxes/
The music venue was small and intimate, with great acoustics, which allowed you to easily become immersed in the music and appreciate the real (and vibrant) sound of the instruments played - a great benchmark for judging just how musically accurate/lifelike sounding one’s system is, when reproducing recordings of similar instruments :)
The performance was arranged by the North East Wales Sinfonia: http://www.newsinfonia.org.uk/
We’re going to the next event on 9th May, which features a cello vs. brass clarinet duo, with performances from Iris ter Schiphorst (‘Hi Bill’), Zoltan Kodaly and JS Bach. Can’t wait!

Robin Trower supported by Joanne Shaw Taylor at Salford Lowry Theatre last night.
JST was a fine warm up act, but Robin Trower was just awesome. One of my very favourite guitarists, I love his style. So economic, not a wasted note, just perfect.
Not bad for 70!

Good man, we'll be in the cv fields from tues afternoon. Aim to get a cv ticket in east rather than west as it's closer to gate c and the tnc side. I'll be buying ours when I do the balance payment this week. Funny how the fields fill up, we were pretty close to gate c last year and the infamous hill, Ali didn't arrive til the Thursday and was in the opposite field 2 mins from us.

Sun Ra Arkestra at Cafe Oto last night. 9 piece set up last night. Great set despite two of the brass section having a barney.
Not music, but going out tonight to see Kevin Bridges perform at Wrexham uni. Should be a giggle - especially if I can shout: 'Awrite, ma man?', and make him feel at home amongst all the Taffies :eyebrows: :D

Burt Bacharach last week, and Rufus Wainwright last night, both incredibly enjoyable.
Just back from the "Sausage and Beer Festival" (yes that really is a thing!) at Jimmy's Farm near Ipswich. We left before the headliner "Toploader" as the kids were whacked, but caught some of Chas & Dave! :eyebrows: Nik Lowe was pretty good. A great day out with the kids.

Orquestra Buena Vista Social Club at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Their farewell tour, they showed a moving tribute video to six of their former band mates, who have sadly died over the years. Nice to see so many people dancing in their seats at the ROH.

The Bevis Frond, last night at The Lexington, Pentonville Rd. A 5 hour drive each way!
Irakere ft. The incomparable Chucho Valdez on piano. A masterclass in Cuban Jazz from the man who practically invented the genre. It was quite an amazing gig to see a 10 piece band on stage in a small club like Ronnie Scotts.
Going back to Ronnie Scotts tonight to see Roy Ayers... should be good!
Don't know if it counts as a 'gig', but I went to see "Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens" in Brighton the other night.
Well it is a musical... of sorts. Just how camp do you think this performance could be? (and in Brighton...)
Off to the Proms at the weekend - slightly different performance I hope!
Rush on the Clockwork Angels tour a couple of years ago. Looks increasingly likely Rush will play no more concerts. They played in LA a few nights ago which has been hinted at being their last. Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson have physical problems and Geddy Lees voice aint the same and he struggles to carry a a lot of songs.

Just sitting at the Under The Bridge Club at Chelsea. Curved Air take the stage for a one off with the original members in 5 minutes. Been a fan since they formed in 1970, I can't wait :)
Remember buying a Curved Air album once. forgotten the name alas. They were, if memory serves, quite good. Toni Iomi liked them, and thats why I bought it lol

Sonja Kristina was rather nice.
She was indeed, I remember seeing her in when she was in Hair, which of course had the (in)famous nude scene :stalks: :eyebrows: so tame by today's standards.
Tonight was a secret gig I was invited to by the management company. All the original members joined them on stage including Daryl Way and Ian Eyre. Half way through the gig, they annouced that it was the 45th aniversary of the release of Air Conditioning, the first album and the then played the whole thing. They changed the order of the songs, as they said that after 20 minutes, they didn't want the audience arguing about who should turn over the record  Just a great night, Viv and I had a great time, I'll put a full review on the Daily Express website, over the weekend.
The Brook Street Band at St John's, Smith Square yesterday.
They were playing a selection of 17th/18th Century French music and some Handel trying to suggest French influences on Handel's music. There was even a pre concert talk on the topic...
Sadly, all-in-all it was a disappointing performance - but that's live music for you they can't always be perfect.
Not long in from Stacey Kent at Ronnie Scott's - she so obviously loves what she does. A great evening.
She sat out on one number - Alfie - which husband, musical director and saxophonist Jim Tomlinson dedicated to Cilla Black. Very moving.
The support act was loud and played 'free' jazz which might be a bit much for Ms Kent's audience. I enjoyed them though.

King Crimson in Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. Sound a bit rubbish at the beginning. But it gradually improved. Played a set of mostly things up to and including 'Red'. Went up to Newcastle yesterday and went to see Future Islands at the 02 Acadamy. My mate has been banging on about them, "best band at Glastonbury" etc. so we combined a nice day out in Newcastle with the gig.
What a disappointment. Every song sounded exactly the same, the same tempo throughout, and as for the lead singers quite ridiculous dad dancing, well the least said the better. Definitely a flavour of the month band who everyone will have forgot about next year in my opinion. There again, I am 60 so could be I'm just talking bollocks and they're shit hot.

Yeah that billing would be something else! Agree with Rich regarding The Unthanks Robert. Really great. Had one of those epiphinal moments on a mid summer evening canal walk with The Unthanks 'Last' on the headphones back in July. Magic stuff.
"Jazz in New York in the thirties" by the Jazz Repertory Company at the Cadogan Hall last Saturday. http://www.cadoganhall.com/event/jazz-in-new-york-150919/ Fairly mixed performance, the second half definitely went better, but then we saw half of the band in the bar at the interval, so that probably loosened them up. Why do Jazz audiences have to clap at every solo?

Tambu is one of their finest work indeed. XIV has some good songs but the album itself does not place itself among their best.

Shuggie Otis the other night at the KOKO Camden. Great gig, Shuggie on guitar, his son on Bass, brother on drums, sax/flute, and keyboard players. Great band all round. The sax player was outstanding, but it was Shuggies night, and boy can that man play. You could hear all those years of experience in just his fills when other members of the band were doing a solo. The man has influenced many, you could hear why.
Only downsides- the keyboard players Hammond sound, great musician, but the hammond sound not as good as it could have been, but that could just be me. The mrs though the keyboards sounded fine.
The venue was just right, small enough to feel intimate, but having a few levels meant you could get a fair few people in there. old style deco, very much like an old style music hall or cinema. Down side drink prices... up side great PA.
All in all, great night . A reclusive legendary guitarist who can still cut it, well more than cut it. slice it, chop it, blend it, with grin inducing solos, and fills, chin stroking moments whilst uttering how is he doing that type of gig.

Prong at the Underworld in Camden last night.
Great set from a band I've followed since first being blown away by their powerful groovy metal as a 16 year old.
Surprise of the night was their support band 'steak number eight', supremely heavy and grungy rock, walls of distortion bass shaking the floors of the venue, and a performance with so much energy it was infectious. They won a lot of new fans on the strength of that show and got a fair old moshpit going. The singer/guitar player throwing himself amongst the crowd like the first time I saw Nirvana. Absolutely bloody great. Chatted to the band afterwards. Nice bunch of kids.
The incredible local act Velvoir playing at a pub last night.
They get better everytime I see them.
Some footage from one of their recent gigs. Seeing these youngsters playing great original music like this fills me with hope for the North East music scene and makes me proud.

Yes, I'll be seeing the Coral later this year. They're playing a local festival, Velvoir are on the same bill.
Some review extracts of Velvoir:
A pulsating four-piece, Velvoir give you a very memorable experience with each member giving 150% to their performance. Even as they warm up, those in the crowd who have not yet heard them give a nod of approval and a ‘wow’ look on their faces as they realise something special may be about to happen. This has been the case on each of the five occasions I have saw them in recent months and Sunday was no different.
The hot and sweaty crowd were about to get even hotter as Velvoir made their way to the stage, with the bass-lines of Joe Fannan, driving drum beats from Billy White, fantastic guitar work by Adam Sams and the unforgettable Verity Jasmine Bee on vocals. They combine to transport you to another universe for an hour, playing original songs such as ‘Pearls On Velvet’ ‘Who’s the most Virile’ ‘Defenestrate’ and ‘Blow’. It’s hard to pin them down to a particular sound, but I hear elements of Frank Zappa, The Doors, King Crimson and Hawkwind with their own unique twist. Maybe the description by fan Andy Stephenson of: “Avant-garde Space-Rock Funk with a World Music edge” could be one to use. …I can’t recall seeing a bassist play in such a style since witnessing John Entwistle of The Who back in the year 2000 at Newcastle Arena. So much energy is put into the performance, the sweat is dripping off Joe and the rest of the band by the end. With cries of ‘more, more!’ the band agree to another song which builds up & up into a crescendo, as the singer is lying across the stage floor with similarities to a young Jim Morrison.

Well what a fantastic night seeing Brian Wilson at the Sage Gateshead. Fantastic band and the man himself was thoroughly engaging. First set great with a few odd moments which kept you wondering where Brian's head was at and slightly iffy sound at times.
That second set however was just plain beautiful from start to finish. Glorious songs, heartbreak and joy and a right good singalong for the encore. Seeing each of the musicians playing this stuff makes you appreciate the genius in Brian's fragile head even more.

Shaun, Bez and Roweta and the Happy Mondays last sunday in Gloucester. Certainly rolled back the years :)
Went to see Jan Garbarek recently in Edinburgh.
Hugely disappointed.
I must have seen him 15/20 times over the last 25 years and loved them all.
So, having not seen him for 10 years or so, I was very much looking forward to it.
firstly, the sound was terrible. Trilok Gurtu was playing, and I love what he does, but he played mainly kit and the Bass drum was THE most dominant sound of the evening. Unbelievable !!!
Gurtu himself didnt look happy and at one point was visibly angry toward the side stage.
Garbarek seemed, to me, to just go through the motions. The solos sounded exactly as I remember them from the records and gigs all those years ago.
I left before the end, I couldnt take any more.
And for someone who loves what this artist has done ( and being a Scotsman who paid 30 quid to attend !! ) leaving early would have felt impossible 2 hours earlier.
Gutted .

Went to see Stars of the Lid at The Barbican last Sunday. Totally stunning live set and projection/light show. A string quartet, two guitars and various analogue synths including a monstrous Moog 55 modular synth. I think it was one of the best concerts I have been to so far in my life. Somehow a much more gutsy performance than I have seen before. And the visual aspect made it quite a trip. A link to a taster of their film document of the event. Hope it works.

Went to see 'The Musical Box' a few weeks ago at Cardiff.
They were brilliant, a 'Tribute' band to the Gabriel era Genesis sells them short. This Canadian collection of musicians 'recreate' the concerts from that era with such accuracy and verve.
They've been touring the 'Selling England by the Pound' tour from 1973 and they were fantastic.............so fantastic that Fiona and I went to Bath three days later to see them again (a 250 mile round trip)!
I think that it's wonderful that we can relive these classic concerts - fortunately, I saw the very same concert with Genesis in 1973 at Bristol, many in the audience had never seen the original gigs.
Essential experience for all true blue early Genesis fans.

Saw Sabbaths final gig at the Genting arena Brum on Saturday night. Absolutely amazing from start to finish, if this was their final show they really went out at the top.
Saw Drive by Truckers last Wednesday at the Ritz in Manchester, very very good apart from the puncture on the motorway on the way home along with about ten other cars on the hard shoulder who had hit the same pothole.

Loreena McKennitt @ The Sage. Gateshead 12/03/17
What a superb venue! Great intimate performance, Just Loreena, with Caroline Lavelle on Cello and Brian Hughes on guitars.
If you appreciate Loreena you'll know what a rare chance it is to get to see her. Very much rooted in her earlier material.
Only downside is that she did tend to ramble on a bit with the song intros in the first half.
Looks like she's 4 tracks or so into a new album due next year.
Before the concert was sat outside the "Slug" under the Tyne Bridge. Huge smile on my face. No Fog! :D

Its a great venue the Albert hall isn't it? Ive seen a few things there now and generally speaking to to be sitting as close to the front of the balcony up to somewhere. that way you get great view of the stage no one standing in front of you and decent sound too.

Tim,
Hi Werner, hope you are well and nice to see you are still going to gigs :)thanks, I’m fine. I’ll spend the time until end of August, maybe even end of September, in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost of the 16 states in Germany. An absolutely flat landscape on the north sea shore. I have no music listening equipment with me in my holiday home, but a lot of books, Darjeeling and Ceylon tea as well as my — most important! — bicycle. There are no gigs to visit, but one may watch countless flocks of sheep, cows, horses and listen to shrieking sea gulls.
I enjoy the air and the sea breeze which is good for my lungs and my skin. Also I’m very happy that there are not even the smallest hills or mountains around. The summer temperatures in Tyrol are difficult to bear for my damaged, asthmatic lung. Temperatures in Schleswig-Holstein during summertime typically are between 68 and 77 °F, compared to 82 and up to 100 °F in Tyrol. The climate change is actually no propaganda of the Chinese, it’s true ;-)

Tim,
Great pictures (as always) Werner. I too really like the shadow photograph, kind of an abstract self-portrait.there’s a hidden linguistic joke in the comment I wrote to this photograph (comments become visible in the web browser if you click on a picture): I called this picture “Mein Kurschatten”, which might be translated to the meaningless words “my spa stays shadow”. “Kurschatten” in German is a paraphrase for a harmless affair one might have while taking a break from work for medical rehabilitation or spa stays.
Thank you for watching my pictures, and remember to re-visit the web address, because currently new pictures are added daily. Glad that you and Grant like my photographic outlook on the world!
Werner.

I caught two great shows from this super talented singer/songwriter from Oklahoma, USA. Carter cites big influences as Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. If you like any of those, might be worth checking her out. Her latest album 'Wilder Side' is very good indeed. She's a great story teller too and very entertaining live. Only over for a quick trip, as she played Glastonbury Acoustic Stage on Friday and flies back to the states today, but returning again for a tour in October.

In the last few weeks I've taken in Kraftwerk at The Albert Hall, The Scott Walker Proms again at The Albert Hall and Silver Apples at Oslo in Hackney. At Kraftwerk the view I had was pretty crappy but the sound was amazing and I had a lot of fun just being there. A lot of attention to detail. Very enjoyable.
The Scott Walker Proms was really a great night. I enjoyed Jarvis Cocker's interpretations but he was the weak link in my opinion, he just doesn't have the right kind of voice to carry the songs. And Richard Hawley's guitar solo on the show closer 'Get Behind Me' was just unnecessary. Overall stunning though. See it here.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08z2x62
Lastly Silver Apples in Hackney was pretty amazing too. Simeon the only surviving member at 79 years old put on a riveting performance playing songs from their 1968 debut and new stuff which was very strong material. The highlight though was a fleshed out version of 'Oscillations' which rocked the house. Fantastic!
Upcoming concerts include Mike Watt/Thurston Moore (Minutemen/Sonic Youth) at Cafe Oto, Low at The Union Chapel, Herbie Hancock at The Barbican, Sun Kil Moon at Shepherds Bush Empire, Faust at Lewes Conservative Club of all places and William Basinski at King's Hall. Tis' the season for going out and doing stuff!
The last gig I went to was Radiohead in Manchester. The next one is the Jesus and Mary Chain.

Went to see Low at The Union Chapel at the weekend. It was part of the Organ Reframed festival. Various artists come in and play a set using the chapel organ as the central instrument. Their set was quite sparse with just the organ, a drum machine and vocal harmonies. But it was highly atmospheric. The venue itself had a part to play in that. My wife said it was one of the best concerts she had ever been to. I found it hard to disagree.
This was the second of two concerts in a week, the first being GAS at The Barbican. Again that was something special. Wolfgang Voight played his Narkopop album in its entirety. A wall of sound with stunning dream like projections. Pretty intoxicating.
Herbie Hancock is up next!

As a long time fan of Clive Gregson and Christine Collister I'm going to see them in concert later in October. Strangely, though, they will be performing at different venues with different partners: Gregson with Liz Simcott and Collister with Michael Fix.
I wonder if they will be any common songs on their set lists.

We were at Manchester last night for Metallica. First time seeing them and for the most part they were great. Loads of stand out moments all focused on their classic stuff (thought the month to a flame "moths" were stunning too). The newer stuff is a bit meh in comparision but when they knock out a master of puppets or enter sandman it's very special.

Just back from 5 days of sublime live music, still buzzing actually. Started in Dublin last Thursday, 3 days at C2C Festival at the O2 Arena and then The Borderline in London last night.
So who did I see (these are the highlights);
Lukas kicked it off in style, this guy and the band are the absolute mutts nuts (Neil Young's band if you didn't know)
Z1QbhNUKt6Y
Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real (twice, Dublin and London)
Lukas Nelson (solo)
Ashley McBryde (twice)
Mo Pitney
Ashley Campbell (Glen Campbell's daughter)
Margo Price
Emmylou Harris
Ryan Kinder
There was a lot of other stuff, but the above was all I was interested in - I'll try and post some pictures and more info later, but I'm pooped right now!
Just back from the O2 Institute3 in Birmingham and a 3 header bill;
Ryan Kinder
Ashley Campbell
Mo Pitney.
What a superb night, quite a small venue with I reckon 60/70 people and a superlative display from three great songwriters. Ashley did a wonderful version playing banjo, accompanied by fiddle and guitar, of 'Gentle on My Mind' that was a real treat. A very talented lady for sure, but the star for me was Mo, how at 24 he writes the songs he does, is beyond me. A very old and wise head on young shoulders - amusing on stage too, quick witted as well as a great musician.
I doubt it would have appealed to many here, as it was true Country and Bluegrass, but I loved it and worth the nightmare 4 hour drive up (just over 2 back).

I saw him in Sheffield last month. He's a great singer song-writer who really understands the importance of light and shade. His band are really tight with great harmonies. I am surprised he is not better known.
Geoff
Seen Joey Landreth a few times, once solo, once with his current three piece band and also with The Bros. Landreth - I agree and don't understand why he isn't better known, a huge talent.
As for my last gig, well I just spent 3 weeks in Nashville and went to 25 shows in all, so it might take awhile if I were to list them all, but I had a great time. On one day I had three shows, one in the afternoon, then a 6pm and a 9pm show - unfortunately they were all in different parts of the city, so we were flying between each in Uber's
I nearly saw Joey over there actually, but he clashed with a Chuck Cannon 'words and music' show and as I'd never seen him before, Chuck won!

I've been to a lot of gigs this year, but I've just been to one that was a bit emotional for me:
TC&I at Swindon Arts Centre 31/10/18
TC&I are Colin Moulding and Terry Chambers from XTC, who have released a 4 track EP, but their remit on the night was basically playing Colin's XTC songs.
XTC stopped touring in 1982 and released their last album in 2000, and have been my favourite band for as long as I can remember.
I am too young to have ever seen them live, so I have been obsessively collecting their output instead. I never thought that I would get to see any of these songs performed.
Earlier this year, TC&I announced 4 dates in their hometown of Swindon, with 2 further dates added later. All of them immediately sold out.
The show was incredible, most of the songs had never been performed live in front of an audience, everyone in the crowd knew how rare and special the experience was.
People in the audience travelled from far and wide for the dates, I met a guy from the Czech republic, there were people who travelled from Germany, USA and even New Zealand.
The setlist was fantastic, a real mix from Colin's songs throughout the whole discography, and even one of Andy's mixed in.
The night was topped off by meeting Colin and Terry, having a chat, some autographs and a photo. Brilliant night that won't be forgotten.

Just back from seeing the Wave Pictures in Chester- FANTASTIC!!
I saw Blue Oyster Cult in a small venue not too far from Richmond, Virginia. I’ve been a big fan, and have most of their albums after “Don’t Fear the Reaper”. The stuff they did before I was not into, and was not up to the quality of the work they did after that time. I’m not sure if they had a lineup change? But they got a lot better with their later work.
So I had high expectations for this show! But was sorely disappointed, they explained this was the first gig they had control over the song list, before they had to promote their latest album, and play the list the recording company wanted them to play. So, now they could select their own set list! And they chose to play all their old stuff, before Don’t Fear the Reaper came out. That song, and Fire of Unknown Origin were the only two of their later songs they played. Very disappointing, to me anyway, perhaps there were others who preferred their earlier work? Apparently they did.

Above a pub in Hanley , Stoke on Trent on Friday night, Fantastic!!
Last concert was the 2018 Steely Dan Tour (well Donald Fagen & company....Walter passed away a year or so ago) at DTE Music Theater (Pine Knob to us old "gezzers"...LOL)
Great show....best back up band in the world. Donald was a little off with his vocals but he is getting on in years like the rest of us. If he comes out again they need to take the wind piano away from him that he uses once in awhile..could not get the notes right.
Audio was excellent. Clair Brothers was doing the Audio. They are the best in the world now bar "none".
Lighting was very good. had great seats right behind the mixing section.
A very good night and show.
Doobie Brother's opened and they were just terrible. They need to stop touring.
Out tonight to catch this:

Bit it of a double whammy actually, this then a night showing of Avengers:Endgame.
Get in!!

My son’s band “Depression, baby” had a headline gig at the Old Blue Last in Shoreditch this week. Here’s a little clip of some shreddery by Tommy Arch that’s worth a listen...

Just back from The Bevis Frond in Manchester , fantastic, fantastic!
On Wednesday went to the Wardrobe in Leeds for a bit to eat (excellent) then down stairs to listen to Submotion Orchestra (excellent).
The Wardrobe was celebrating its 20th year so well done them :)
On Saturday went to the Hacienda Revival at the Mayfield Depot in Manchester.
Fantastic - the last act we saw was the Hacienda Classic and they were awsome :)

Was a good night at an excellent venue!
Marco.
Got one of his. Looks like an intimate setting.
Churches often sound great
Yeah, the acoustics were great, mate. Love intimate venues like that for gigs. And aside for being a talented singer and guitar player, he has a great way of interacting with his audience. Plus, I love how he quite often ends with this song, which is my favourite:

So unique and just stunning to watch live!
Marco.
yeah its a good one that... alas on his debut album i think and hard to find at a reasonable price. been meaning to explore more of his stuff but not got round to it as yet
Yup, it's on 'The fox and the Monk' album. I've got it on CD, but you can easily access it via the likes of Tidal.
He was selling CD and vinyl versions of his albums last night, so picked up a couple. Always like to leave a gig having bought some music from the performer(s) concerned. Sounded great on the way home too, through the car hi-fi system:)
In fact it was quite funny before we went into the gig, we were playing John Smith albums in the car, quite loudly, and folks going past on the way to the gig kept trying to see through the blackened windows of the Brabster who was inside, as they could hear the music, which sounded really good... I think they must've thought it was John Smith inside having a practice sesh!:D
Marco.
Not doing tidal etc these days. Just my own music. I will keep an eye open for a reasonably priced copy tho
Ah, didn't know that mate... Btw, how do you post videos you've taken with a smartphone onto the forum?
Del did a video of JS performing last night, but when she emails me it, there's nothing there, probably because the file size is too big... So how do I get the video she's taken on here phone posted here?:)
Don't want to use YouTube or anything like that.
Marco.
