I see that the new Funk platter and arm mods for the SL-1200/1210 are out at select dealers. Although I don't have my SL-1210 any more, I have to say that the platter does look the business, and I shall make a point of seeking out Sound HiFi's stand and having a listen to the combination at this weekend's show.

I'm sure the performance is splendid, but why does the platter have to cost £500 or so and the arm mod around a grand at least? Surely these people realise that money is tight, even for the better off amongst us and selling at 1970's-1980's margins ain't the done deal these days - seen how many dealers are closing or being taken over recently????????? :(

£500 including a dealer margin for the platter seems reasonable to me. As for the arm, I'm presuming that there's a fair amount of work involved in converting the Technics original. As ever, the market will decide how relevant these things are, but I can't help but admire what Arthur has done here.

Wow!! Very nice indeed. I wonder how this platter compares to the very heavy and seriously engineered Mike New Platter. I know Marco said the Mike New is a fantastic upgrade and got rid of the shouty presentation the Techies tend to have due to their ringy stock platter. Shuggie, please feed back if you get a chance to listen. I can only say that unfortunately for us modders these things are never cheap generally but more choice can't be a bad thing. As for the arm, well congrats to it's creator for incorporating the brilliant vta fly on the wheel adjust, such a brilliant component of the stock arm, as such it always bugged me that this tends to have to be disgarded / binned with the majority of arm upgrades hence my arm has remained stock. This arm looks like one I would seriously consider upgrading to if reports are favourably positive - Looks good !!

But for twice the price of a Jelco plus arm-board?

Continued apologies guys, but these bodgers/modifiers must price themselves in a realistic manner IMO, otherwise it can come across as mere greed - IMO.....

Not so long ago I emailed an enquiry to Arthur (Funk Firm) about an acrylic platter and was quoted £600.00 plus extra if I wanted it chamfered and was my enquiry serious/ All I can say is that I lost interest. I know Arthur is held in high esteem on this forum but he does charge mightly high for his stuff and seems to pluck high prices out of the air AND YUP I do know the costs of manufacturing and dealer margins. Personally, I would be more interested in hearing how it performs against a Vantage Audio platter mod at a third of the cost let alone a Mike New platter, Or the stock platter plus the Oyaide sub platter at c£250.oo dealer cost, viz MCRU for instance? I don't think that half the work that goes into making the Mike New copper/ali platter goes into machining the one piece Funk acrylic platter but I guess there is someone who will tell me otherwise? On the other hand should the Funk effort be better than the Mike New one then I shall await the latter platters :) being up for sale here or on Ebay, Mmm! As for the arm mod I'm sure J7 of Audio Origami could perform his magic on the stock arm just as well and for less?

Well, moving the platter into production has clearly made it more affordable, particularly when the price includes a dealer margin. Whether it's as good as or better than the Vantage Audio or MN platters is quite another question; at least it's a different approach. As for the arm, I had my Technics arm rewired by Johnnie at Audio Origami and it was definitely better for it, and may have been better still with foam filling; however it was still a pretty ropey thing compared with a Jelco SA-750, itself summarily outclassed by my old Ittok LVII and (relatively) inexpensive Audio Note Arm 1. I will charitably assume that the Funk FX arm tube does the job that it claims to do and lifts the Technics arm out of the ordinary into a higher league of musical competency, while retaining its fabulous ease of use. I will also charitably assume that the cost of machining that platter correctly and to a high cosmetic standard is not so cheap as you think.

I'm certainly not going to buy either of these items because I have no need for a Technics, but I do applaud Funk Firm for bringing them to market, and doing so via dealers.

Yes, The Mike New Platter looks like a seriously engineered peice of kit, just look at it :stalks: (check AOS images from previous threads, google images or even Mikes site). Mike will also tell you whatever you want to know about it, the hard work and heavy metal that goes into making one of those babies etc. I've had dealings with him re: my purchase of the Mike New bearing and his platter / bearing are quality stuf that look like they would cost all factors considered. If this platter is £500ish then it is around the same as Mikes - does it look and feel the weight of quality machined solid alluminium and copper ?? I'd really need to hear this Platter against the Mike New. Also does this platter sit over the stock bearing ? the Mike New bearing is a 'serious' bearing for a serious platter.
Again, arm looks nice and retaining the techy vta is a big positive in my book but it has to be heard !

So Hugo, the Jelco 750 is outclassed by an Ittok eh? maybe I took my Ittoks totally for granted back then, but I'd trade it's clanky treble now for the slick and solid build of the Jelco 750 I think :)

To put the platter into context. An Orbe platter with clamp etc can be had for £390. This suggests the Funk is well overpriced. What is the point of the upgrade arm when it costs almost as much as the full funk (rega based) arm ?

Horses for courses. My Ittok has, however, been rewired and foam filled by Johnnie at Audio Origami. Having owned the SA-750D, I can state without any equivocation that the AO-fettled Ittok is in a different class to the Jelco, which is good for the price, but no more than that.

I think it's a wee bit better than that with low-compliance cartridges, such as the DL-103 and SPU, otherwise I wouldn't have kept mine for so long ;)

For me, in that context, the Jelco is as good as any £1000 tonearm I've heard, and difficult to better. You're judging the Jelco (and rightly so) on the cartridges you used with it, which in my opinion weren't the ideal match. As ever in hi-fi, it's all about synergy.

I'll comment later on the new Funk platter and modded tonearm for the Techy :)

I'm judging both arms having used them on two different 'tables, fitted with various cartridges, in the context of my system. According to my preferences, the Ittok is the better arm. That's it. Certainly there are areas of presentation where the Jelco is "nicer" but when it come shown to communicating the music, the Ittok os just better, for me. The Audio Note arm is massively better in all respects than either Ittok or SA-750D.

Can I say that I flagged up the Funk platter and arm simply because I admire the design and execution of both? I happen to think that the pricing is OK, but clearly others differ on that point. Perhaps HiFi World would consider running a comparison article on the various platter options?

And you're entitled to your opinion, based on your relevant experience, but I don't think that you heard the Jelco at its best, Hugo, because the cartridges you used with it weren't the most synergistic of matches - and we all know how important synergy is in hi-fi, especially with turntables - you learned that with Regas and your Techy! ;)

I also think that your disenchantment with the quality of the finish on the Jelco SA-750 sample you had has (understandably) tainted your view of it.

As an aside, I like the Ittok, and consider it to be one of the best Linn products there has been, but again, partner it with the wrong cartridge and T/T, and the results are less than ideal... Context and synergy is all! :)

Hi Marco, Looking forward to your views with regard to this and keeping us back on thread. I know you've had the Mike New Platter for some time and read your comments / review on it back then. I noted you expressed how it removed the shouty aspect associated with the stock platter which didn't surprise me at all, I'd only expect a dead thud from a solid thing like that - How do you think this one will compare? Have you heard this new arm ? Has anyone ? :)

The material used in the Pinks from yesteryear were absolutely perfect for vinyl termination I understand and remember the sonics from these decks with great affection and respect, if not the fact that these decks fell apart all too easily........ I'm sure, as I said before, that the platter is superb at its job.

Just got back from Whittlebury and a fairly good show it was, too, if just as disorientating as usual. The Minotaur's labyrinth has nothing on that place! Unfortunately didn't get a chance to hear the Funk mods on the SL-1210, since Sound HiFi's stand seemed permanently busy, but a quick look did confirm the very high standard of finish on both platter and arm. I did get to meet David Brook and had a nice long, informative, chat with Nick Gorham who shared his wisdom on phono stages with me.

Yo Marco,

How long is shortly, ?

Waiting with anticipation for your review of the Funk Art acrylic platter. I heard it at the Whittlebury Show with the Funk modded Tech arm against the stock platter with Oyiade mat and SME309 arm...... absolutely no doubt in my mind that I prefered the Oyiade + stock platter, but of course different arms and different cartridges were being used which must have had a contributory influence and, as always, there is personal preferences to take into account?

I would be interested in your comparison of bass performance for instance?
Did you know that Mike New Audio actually machined a trial acrylic plater to judge performance, I'll leave him to opinion his findings if he should read this post and is of a mind to respond?

Ermm, wheres the Mains Cable R Us platter that David periodically mentions or is this now a cancelled project?

Finally, if you prefer the acrylic platter let me buy your MN platter off you, on bended knee pretty please, thank you beforehand

Hi Ron,

I now have the Funk platter in my possession, so preliminary thoughts will be revealed after the weekend, most likely on Monday. Tomorrow, I'm going down to Martin T's with my T/T (with its new Ortofon arm) and will be doing the platter test there, amongst other things, (so you'll also have his opinion), so hang tight, amigo! :)

No worries about the MN platter, should I prefer the Funk one, although I doubt I'll be making that sort of decision until I've lived with the Funk one for at least a week, or so, and then swapped back, evaluated things thoroughly and come to a thorough and conclusive decision

Not cancelled by any means but I have that much going on it's still on-going, I expect to have it ready before christmas. It is totally unique and does not involve copper or acrylic so not a copycat as far as I can tell.

I heard the Mike New on Marcos TT a while ago, I think the 3 options of Acylic/MN/Oyaide have to be taken on their own merits with the arms/carts used as well, there are far too many variables to say this is by far the best, I think the Oyaide is one of the best solutions ever invented for TT's period but of course I would say that wouldn't I!

And that is exactly the point where I feel the MN-copper-alli-platter has a clear advantage over the FF-platter (and the original!). Higher mass simply means more rotational stability = rhythmic security.
The original platter (perfectly damped with an SDS isoplatmat) topped off with a Timestep/Herbie's mat was clearly inferior to the MN-copper-alli-platter also topped off with the TS/Herbie's. The Boston Audio mat 1 is even better (never tried an Achromat because I dont like "plastic" on my TT).

Yes, but it's not as simple as that (if only it were). There are other, equally important, things to consider when using a high-mass platter on an SL-1200/1210; the effect of which I've heard all too clearly with my own ears.

I'll tackle this matter in more detail later :)

I'll have a stab at this.

In a belt drive TT system maybe but DD doesn't work like that , if you put a high mass platter on the 1200 it will still turn at the correct speed but the PLL system is not able to react with the same instantaneous speed with respect to any changes in load , which is critical to any direct drive turntable system .

Marco

Indeed - and I've heard the effect of that very clearly. It was most obvious to my ears when I was swapping between the high-mass MN aluminium platter, and the lighter (acrylic) Funk one.

However, in some systems, it may be heard as a positive, depending on the sonic signature of the system in question, and how the user likes her or her music presented. It would be interesting to hear Mike's thoughts on how he perceives the sonic presentation of both of his platters, when used on his own SL-1210.

For me, I prefer the lighter, quicker, more rhythmically adroit, sound of the Funk platter (I haven't heard Mike's 'Engineering Thermo Plastic', platter), in the context of how I've modified my T/T, particularly as my system is in no way short of bass weight or 'heft'.

The 'tune-playing' aspect of music reproduction is also very important to me, and there the Funk platter trumps the MN aluminium one - as I've said, in the context of my particular system.

However, more on this later!

I agree Marco , quite right and I can imagine some listeners preferring a high mass platter, but like your goodself I suspect I would like the FF platter , I did listen to it very briefly last year at the show , very good indeed.

All I can say is that the "tune playing ability" and the timing were massively improved when I switched from the original platter which was perfectly damped by the SDS isoplatmat (worked amazingly well despite being quite light) to the MN-platter.
My Techy with MN bearing, MN platter, SME V and EMT JSD6 is the best thing I've ever had (Technics Q2, Audio Linear 4001, Ariston RD 40, Sondek, Well Tempered Reference, Thorens TD 738 were the other ones).
Maybe there is some synergy in my system because the QUAD 57 are not exactly bass monsters and the bass was also improved by the MN platter which could be too much for other speakers?
The Thorens TD 738 is more or less identical to an EMT 938 and the DD-EMT's rely on a very powerful motor combined with a very light platter so the resulting sound should be ideal but I can assure you it wasn't! It was far from bad (and a whole lot better than the diverse rubber-banders) but still the Techy is the one which makes me dance:)

All valid observations, Michael.

However, in order to get a proper handle on where I'm coming from, you need to hear a direct comparison between the MN aluminium platter and the Funk and/or (perhaps) Mike's 'Engineering Thermo Plastic' platter.

It's a no-brainer going from the stock platter to the MN aluminium one, so in that respect, I concur with your observations :)

The bottom line is if you think it's better ,then it is better ! All I was trying to point out was the way a DD system works is not quite the same as ye olde belt drive , perhaps others can explain it better but simply putting a high mass platter on a 1200 does not mean you will get better or more presise rotation .

It's just not that simple , that's all but enjoy your deck I'm sure it's marvelous:)

Sorry, didn't want to upset anybody. Of course I didn't make a valid comparison between the FF and the MN platter (t'aint easy in Austria!).
My thoughts are a comparison between high-mass and low-mass platter.
I always thought that the superiority of the (acrylic) FF and the (thermoplastic) MN platter is the better damping, because even the copper-ally-platter is not completely acoustically inert (in reality NOTHING is!). The "plastic"-platters do have a quite different resonance characteristic which suits some systems more, as always the proof is in the listening!
BTW even the resonance of the feet and the support will be affected by a higher mass.
Isn't the SP10/mk3 a high mass platter design?

Michael

chris@panteg
10-06-2012, 13:31
The SP10 mk3 is a high mass platter design but the motor and PLL is entirely different and designed to cope with the higher mass , the mk2 is in fact very different again being a closed motor design , where the magnet/Rotor is not part of the platter like the 1200 , the mk2 platter weighs 2.9 kilos .

Much more too it than mass - much about how the equal and opposite vibrations from the groove/stylus are handles. If they don't leave the vinyl through a well matched interface and then disapated or absorbed, there's a real effect of these vibrations coming back to the stylus and causing smearing or resonances etc.

That effects perception of timing or giving more energy to parts of the spectrum etc etc.

I'm talking platter mats here rather than control systems - that is probably about keeping with design specs..

Yes and with the mk3 the platter/magnet are integral like the SL1200 mk2 which is known as an open design.

Poor David, there is no definite conclusion, because I think nobody heard all available platter variations, and if, there is no clear answer what is "better" under all circumstances.
As with all things audio only the listener can decide if he likes the sound or not. There was an interesting article in LP-Magazin (Germany) a few months ago where the editor referred to his findings at an audio show and was amazed that different audiophiles he knows and trusts, rated some demonstrations completely different  .
There is no "truth" in audio!

Thanks Chris, I was pretty sure you were going to say that. It is of course impossible to make comparisons unless everything else is kept constant.

Hi Michael, I wasn't expecting a black and white answer. There is as you say no such thing in subjective and context specific things like audio.

Tbh I'm pretty sold on the Vantage platter but was just curious about FF one. From a scientific perspective I'd still like to know more about it. I've been on the FF website and the picture of it is not very clear.

So if Marco or Martin could post some pics of it I would be very appreciative.

Thanks

Marco

I'll gladly photograph the platter, if you want, but Martin's got a much better camera (and tripod), so it's probably best that he does it :)

If you call me sometime tomorrow (you have my number), I'll explain exactly why, from all the platters I've heard on my Techy, the Funk one is what I consider to be the best

Marco.

As mentioned by Marco in post further back, the Mike New ETP Platter has to be included in any of these considerations for comparison. The only thing for me is I so wish these things (apart from Richards modded stock platter) didn't cost so much, all nigh on £600 :( It's one of the reasons why i guess for quite some time now I can only refer to my beloved Techie as part modified :(

the platter has 1 essential part that is impossible to source and thus has to be made specially, so due to that fact the platters are expensive I guess, that is 1 reason why I went for the vantage platter and I will have mine finished very shortly, even though I could buy one I personally think the vantage platter will be close to or maybe better than plastic platters, I would like to listen to one other than through headphones but don't have time to faff about any longer as I am just too busy, my Tech will have:-

MCRU feet
MCRU PSU
Vantage Platter
Stillpoints LPI
Vantage Bearing
SME 309 Arm Re-Wired with NWA Cabling (until the wand comes back)
Kontrapunkt B Cartridge
Furutech Silver Arrows Tone-Arm Cable
Running through my LDA Tube Phono Stage

Exquisite, :)

then its time to get my next Lenco GL75 up and running with Dominic's wizardry.
