Joined recently and committed the faux pas of posting before introducing myself here, what can I say? It was late and I sped read the T&C's. So here I am to right my wrongs.
I'm a user of the black stuff, dont do digital unless I have to,anything to do with vinyl is of interest to me. Just getting back into HiFi after a long absence so have a lot to catch up on.At the mo I'm looking into the rebuilt lenco plinth route as my main source. That should be interesting for a DIY novice such as myself. Interesting times ahead me thinks

We need to see your system and, digital fool that I am, introduce you to the now wonderful world of 21st century digitally derived reproduction, as modern amps don't get upset with loads of ultra-sonic and rf mush being fed them, DECENT speakers don't sound off like buzz saws if given strong HF these days and decent digital sources DO have air and space and depth aplenty given half a chance. That and the fact that good modern turntable systems and phono stages are livelier sounding, less distorted and far more "interesting" to listen to "and through" these days..

If that lot hasn't put you off xstaying here for ever, hope you enjoy yourself and have better sounding music reproduction as a result :lolsign:

Flinx aka Peter. Thanks for the warm welcome guys looks like my lurking days are over :) My system at the moment is LP12,Ittok LVII,Dynavector 10x5, Exposure XI pre, XIII power amp, Ruark Talisman II speakers. Quite a modest system as they go, but all the components just work well to give a very 'musical' balanced sound. I didnt really have plans to change the LP12 because I reckon to get a significantly better sound I would have probably to spend more than I was prepared to. However that was before I stumbled upon LencoHeaven. After reading how those guys were transforming the lenco it too a state of the art TT able to take on the very best TT's, well i was hooked. Even for a complete DIY novice such as myself the opportunity to own a true 'giant killer' was an opportunity not to be missed. So my plans for the lenco are to make a slate plinth, PTP top plate ,upgrade bearings and electronic speed controller. The cost of the project seem to have spiraled way beyond initial intentions.But I have convinced myself that this will be my retirement TT so it will be worth it, as I will not be upgrading the TT ever again.
I must admit my lack of enthusiasm for digital may be due to the fact that I havent heard many digital systems. The few that I have heard did not exactly float my boat. However the one digital development that does sound interesting is HD audio. I have not heard a HD audio system but I think this may change my mind about digital music, then again..

Hi Peter, welcome to AoS :) I may well watch what you get up to with your Lenco as i have a G99 doing nothing right now except sitting in the loft (for the last 29 years) :doh:

Nice speakers the Ruarks as well as being a nice bit of furniture!

Depends on the age and tuning of the LP12, as well you all know :)

Lenco's are still just about cheap enough and I have a source who bought up nigh on 30 assorted decks over the last year who wishes to trim the quantities down, should you be interested. The old GL59 and 60 models have a thicker top plate, but are too rare for me to recommend buying one, only to chop it about or ditch the arms etc... Getting a good GL75 and having a new top plate made is a far better idea I feel myself. The main bearings weren't always close-tolerance, but the liners are a standard size according to research I did on lencoheaven and I believe heavier duty housings etc can be got for not silly Techie money...

All I can say is this - the LP12 with Cirkus and a good plinth sample is still a very good all-round deck, the add-ons being the costly killer IMO (as some of the Garrard and Techie ones are fast becoming - IMO). Getting any idler driven deck to behave as well, noise wise, is going to be VERY difficult, although they'll be possibly better in terms of dynamic wow.. :)
