View Full Version : Tannoy Lancasters.... on stands!!

What is this crazy one eyed madness I hear you ask.

lol... well, this picture of Abbey Road in the late 60's to early 70's inspired me:-

So a call to Deco Audio was made to order a set of Something Solid XF stands. Decent price of £250 got me some superb stands.

Sound wise I'm blown away... less boom more definition and more focused soundstage.

Here are some pics. I'd highly recommend to do this with the Lancasters as they sound different again. What an upgrade...!!

Excellent stuff, Joe, and a great pic. I'm sure that our resident 'Lancastrians' are taking note! ;)

Also, it shows that Tannoy DCs were indeed being used in Abbey Road studios in the 1960s. The bigger rooms there would've had Lockwood Majors (or similar), but just on their castors.... :eyebrows:

LOL.... butuz, those tea trolleys would probably set you back more than £250 these days strange as it may seem.

I don't think the wife would have accepted them too.. It's all a balance when women are involved...lol

BTW Marco.. If you have ever seen Gimmie Shelter by The Rolling Stones there is a scene in America where they are mastering a track and if you look carefully there is one wall stacked with GRF's... I wonder if Nick can build me a time machine! :o

I haven't seen the film but I've got the album! Must look out for the film - sounds interesting :)

I'm sure that your stands have made a significant sonic improvement - the right stands are so crucial to obtaining optimum sonic performance with speakers.

Big Tannoy DCs rule ok, ya bass! :exactly:

How tall are the stands?
I've just got some york cabs and have raised them a few inches at the moment as they are pretty big.

Looks like they are being driven by Quad 50E monoblocks.

Well, OK , not exactly useless. But a photo would be nice. :)

I had a very similar pair of Tannoys as my main speakers at Scalford this year. Not bad, not bad at all. IIRC Alex was particularly impressed! :)

Yep, ime raising Tannoy cabs is a good move to clean up the lower mids / upper bass and generally open up the sound.

Hello Joe,

Could you provide some exact measurements (maybe in mm) of your stands and also the used materials?
They are very nice and if it is not a problem for you I would like to copy them.

The stands look perfect, Joe, so a job well done! In my opinion, they should be considered as mandatory with Lancasters, as they hold the speakers rigidly in position and get them just the right height off of the floor :)

Going back to the picture of Abbey Road in the 1960s, I just love the way that studios looked in those days, rather 'sombre' and functional like BBC control rooms did, where funny little men in white lab coats twiddled lots of knobs and *really* cared about the sound that was achieved.

I bet that's a lovely valve mixing desk in there, too! Compare that to the pish that they use nowadays..... Ah well, we'll never get back the glory days, but at least we can use some of the superb kit in our systems ;)

Thanks a lot for the measurements!
I attached a photo. Could you please check if your measurements were taken as shown with the arrows on the photo?
Could you also measure the size of the rectangular rods (the wall height) and maybe the diameter of the round rods?

I can't see the little plinth at the base of your Lancasters? I'm assuming that the plinth just fits snugly in the top of the speaker stand? Is that so?

Hello Hugo.

The plinths had to be unscrewed and taken off. Mine was also glued but they came off ok in the end, just needed a little leverage.

This is no biggie as they have nothing to do with the sonic characteristics of the speakers, they are just three sided plinths.

I agree. The sound of the Lancs are superb but because the box is relatively on the floor it produces a lot of boom and flappyness as would any speaker really unless they have the capacity to overcome it.

These are just the right height as now the center of the DC is at ear level when seated. Just like in the Abbey Road picture as they would be standing at the mixing desk.

I love the look of how studios used to be too and yeah I bet the mixing desk as some kind of valve output although they are going in to 50E's so they must have been new at the time.

Would love to know what they were mixing down there, who knows! :)

The Something Solid XF stands are custom made to whatever size you want.
The round uprights are approx 18mm in diameter.
The lower square rods are 15mm.
The upper square rods are 10mm

It was bought for me in the late 90's. It was one of the first made, designed by Peter van der Jagt.

Superb thing. You can buy other versions like it as kits these days I think. There are some other pics of it in my thread on the gallery page.

Sorry mate. Those are in centimeters.

I know them because they are the measurements of the base of the speakers. Height wise it's what works for me in my room, you may want yours to be higher or lower depending on how far you are from them.

Just a quick question about its height: is this the best height that was determined by some professionals or by heavy listening or you just measured that using this height the speaker would be at ear level in your listening room?
I am asking it to know if I should stick to this height or I could use a little bit higher stand (let's say 30-35cm)?

I guess if it would be shorter that the bass would be less improved, but I am not sure if using a taller stand would not affect negatively the bass reproduction.

Adjust the height to your listening position so that the center of the speaker is at ear level.
