As I said in my pm, Phil, I think the Shelter 901 may just do what you need. Longer term, you may want to revisit a better step-up transformer too. Alternatively, a really good step-up can make the 33PTG really sing. Something like the Choir Audio that I'm using works superbly with the AT.

By the way, a full stop here or there would make your big sentence easier to read :)

Trying to improve my vinyl set up, i was thinking about the well tempered
golf ball type but is it all hype, my system is a pioneer pl71 audio technica
33ptg ear 843p mm/mc phono stage/ manley stingray/ shahinian arcs,the
arcs and stingray are staying, my phono stage is great i have tried a few
different type valves and have come to the conclusion that the mullards
give best performance for the price, short plate type, ive had a denon dl 103
and thought it was great for the money, then purchased an audio technica
33ptg which was better at either side of the spectrum but lacks body in the
middle, im happy with the turntable after borrowing a roksan xerxes with
artemiz arm with my cartridge proved to me how good my tt was, so if i were
to improve things further do i buy a better step up or better cartridge ive
thought about the spu but does it pick up the information like my at33ptg,
also i found the denon dl 103 picks up every crackle and pop on the record,
does the spu have the same trait, the shelter 901 seems to fit the bill it dont
get bad reviews and seems to work in medium mass arms, or should i buy a
step up transformer which is the weak link in the ear 843p theres not that
many mc cartridges that go with a 17g mass arm, which way should i go.

Argh! I can't read that ... I'll try and make it more readable without changing any words ...

My gut reaction is keep your cart and phono stage, they're not the weak link.
Speaking as an ex PL-71 owner, it's an excellent TT for the price it currently fetches but it can be bettered. I went from a Rega P3 to a PL-71 and then to a Townshend Rock II.

I doubt I'll be upgrading the Rock for quite some time, it's really in a different league.

I'm also a big fan of the Stingray - one of only two valve integrateds (from those that I've heard) that I would have permanantly in my system. It's a beauty!
