Seems like some smart solutions in the design of this quite costly turntable from EAR Yoshino. Anyone heard it?

seems to me audiophiles are being taken for a ride. Of course, something is worth whatever people will pay for it but a lot of fancy pants CNC'd pieces does make me wonder. I am sure it will be great, but how much better than a tricked out 1210 at a fraction of the cost? Or a well fettled 3/401?

Have heard it once and was impressed even if the rest of the system was not very familiar to me. The sound was bit different than the most of the players I have heard or owned and it somehow reminded me of the characteristics of the SYD players - agile and full of resolution. However did not go to my shortlist if ever decide to update ;)

This item, like all of EAR's gear these days I suspect, is priced for the Hong Kong market, where expensive is desirable - I mean, £12K for a PHONO STAGE!!!!! A costly stereo bestowes great self-worth and standing on those able to afford it and EAR do make some wonderful gear..

The rest of us can look to a Spacedeck or tweaked out techie (which is catching up fast) and smile smugly :)

I have heard the EAR record playing device - lovely piece of kit, but not for me as I prefer high mass non suspended fishing wire thread driven bling machines :eyebrows: with a fettle-ized decca of course:ner:

There's a little drawing in the back of one of my school exercise books from about 1969, trying to work out a way of pushing a platter round with magnets. I'd love to take one of these to bits to find out how Tim did it!

Next to it is another drawing in which I was trying to work out a hydraulic drive, using a rotating trough of silicon fluid, with paddles transmitting the drive to the platter. I wonder if anyone's tried that yet?

Isn't that a linear motor made circular, as used in the Papst direct-drive motors in "our" Dual's (well, you use the motor out of one :))

Indeed!

I like and respect Tim and love his 'quirky' personality, particularly how he calls a spade a spade. Having met and spoken with him a few times at his work premises, and observed him 'on the job', as it were, it's quite obvious to me that he's the real deal.

However, these days he trades on his (largely deserved) good name, and so anything with 'Tim de Paravicini' written on it, commands a certain price on the marketplace, much the same as any other 'badge-fi' does these days :rolleyes:

At least with Tim's stuff, though, what's 'under the hood' will usually be as good as the aesthetic frippery that adorns it, which can't always be said about other badge-fi, sorry, 'high-end' equipment! ;)

Like I said, I think he's priced it to sell in the far east, as we're too low paid, skint and tight with what we have to make him any kind of living here sadly :(

Yup... I just wish that a major 'high-end' manufacturer today would bring out something expensive that, for a change, was justifiably expensive for the right reasons - and if they did, it would be praised here, rather than ridiculed.....

Expensive doesn't bother me in hi-fi, *providing* that what I'm paying for is translated into 'no-compromise', utterly superlative sonic performance, the likes of which I would not be able to obtain from anywhere else.

'Desirable badges', rampant 'fanboyism', borne from nonsensical brand loyalty, or cachet/snob value, however, don't interest me one iota. When I know that's what I'm mainly paying for with equipment, or someone's stupidly high overheads, because they operate in somewhere like London, I run a mile and keep my wallet firmly shut!!

I suppose so. it's certainly more elegant to create a rotating magnetic field by generating it than by using a motor and belt to rotate a load of magnets!

Onkyo's PX-100M also uses a linear induction type motor...slightly chunkier than the B&O, mind :)

To all intents and purposes, any direct drive motor is a linear motor bent round in a circle.

Yes, I used to work for Tim at the factory in Kimbolton. As a hifi fan from early age I read magazines as admired what he does.

The the platter drive is driving by magnets around the diameter it's the magnets attraction that drives the platter support by that bearing he tells you. the magnets housing is driving by the tooth belt from the motor. You do get this slack hysteresis movement as magnets divided between the diameter of the housing when stationary. The turntable's plate support by spring loaded suspension (like SME or AVid ) simple as that.
To buy or not it's up to you.
