The last couple of weeks I've been staying with Marco in Wrexham. As is usual, the hospitality and generosity shown by Del and Marco is second to none.

During my stay this time, we visited a few new (to us) record shops.First, Wrexham itself.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/wrexhamrecord04.jpg

Moonlight is run by Bryan, who usually has some interesting and hard to find vinyl at extremely competitive prices.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/wrexhamrecord05.jpg

The three Grateful Dead albums pictured were what I bought on this visit.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/wrexhamrecord02.jpg

Moonlight also stock a great selection of CDs and DVDs.

The front counter.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/wrexhamrecord01.jpg

Well worth a visit if in the area.

There is also another record/CD shop in Wrexham, but the guy's a twat and doesn't deserve the exposure.

Next up is Grey And Pink in Chester.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/greypink05.jpg

This is the shop we visit more than any other, simply because the huge amount of stock.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/greypink08.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/greypink07.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/greypink06.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/greypink04.jpg

The chap behind the counter is Paul, very knowledgeable on most music, but especially prog.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/greypink03.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/greypink01.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/greypink02.jpg

Next up was a trip over to Frodsham in Cheshire. Marco was tipped off about this place by a forum member ( I think)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/frodshammusic06.jpg

Rupert, the owner carries quite a large selection of vinyl, CDs and other music related items, mugs, books etc. The day we visited all albums were £5.00 or 5 for £20.00.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/frodshammusic04.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/frodshammusic03.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/frodshammusic01.jpg

Last Thursday, Marco decided we should visit Beaumaris in Anglesey where we enjoyed some excellent fish at Neptune Cafe Bar.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/beaumaris03.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/beaumarisfood01.jpg

Sorry for not taking the picture earlier, but we were starving. :lolsign:

From Neptune to Neptunes in Rhyl.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/rhylrecord03.jpg

After hearing Rhyl get a good slagging, I urged Marco to take a detour back from Beaumaris and Llandudno through Rhyl and I'm glad he did. Driving through the main street we spotted this,

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/rhylrecord02.jpg

and of course we had to go in.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/rhylrecord04.jpg

Another great find, and another wad of money spent. Paul the owner, has only been operating for 6/7 weeks, lets hope the business grows.

And honestly Paul, we're not dealers. :lolsign:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/rhylrecord01.jpg

Last, but certainly not least, is Vod Music in Mold.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/moldrecord01.jpg

An absolutely fascinating place, and not only because of it's size. I think it's the smallest record shop in the U.K.

Colin, the owner (who I'm pleased to see has joined this site) also organizes record fairs in and around North Wales.

More can be read about Vod and Colin here (http://www.recordshopcity.co.uk/sleeve-notes/for-the-record-shops-no-3-colin-vod-music).

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/moldrecord02.jpg

On Saturday, Marco and I headed to one of Colin's record fairs in Flint.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/recordfairflint01.jpg

Entry fee was a paltry 50p. There was a good selection of dealers, some offering rare vinyl at good prices, to dealers offering excellent condition vinyl at £3/£4. So plenty of choice for everyone. I managed to pick up an excellent 1st pressing of The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet as well as a 1st pressing of Hawkwind - In Search Of Space.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/davhar/recordfairflint02.jpg

There are some other record shops in the area, but I think these ones are the best, with most offering good discounts for cash. More importantly, these shops had the friendliest of staff, and or owners.

All in all, an excellent 2 weeks of vinyl buying.

Once again, thanks to Del and Marco for suffering me for two whole weeks.

S'ok, I'll be popping in later and snaffling it up.... :ner: :eyebrows:

Great pics, stoaterheid. There should be some more, no? What about Beaumaris Castle and some of the shots of the surrounding seaside?

Going into proper old-fashioned record shops is the best way to buy vinyl - none of yer soulless eBay or Amazon buying on a bloody computer pish.

You walk in with a wad of cash, pick up a ton of records, take them to the counter, and haggle a deal with the owner, and then walk out with some severe bargains!! Get out into the real world, flick through a physical selection of music and chat to interesting people. It's the way that music should be bought!

Always great having you down - at least you can't say that you haven't seen North Wales. Next year we'll do Manchester! You might need a new pair of baffies for that ;)

Marco.

That's bloody done it!!!! :steam:

What's worse - having no dosh and living on the end of the line in sunny gentle Suffolk, or having no dosh and living "back home," with all those record shops around?????

What WONDERFUL places to spend a few hours browsing round. I hope you two bankrupted yourselves with all the vinyl you must have bought - you did buy some didn't you????? :D

My wife feels guilty dragging me to the Suffolk seaside, but she hates the rain and that's the main reason why Nth Wales is so green I reckon :)

Thanks for posting :respect:

We get less than one day of rain a week here, Dave, and even then it only rains for an hour or so, and then stops.

We don't get much, ask Snapper. It's even sunnier here than Saltcoats :)

For constant rain, move to Glasgow!!

"Porky" Peckham was renowned for doing "all sorts" to get the "sound" and "punch" he got from his cuts I believe, - something that may be difficult to do in subsequent digital remastering - summat to do with his old valve Fairchild compressors I reckon ;) Apparently, he's doing digital remastering as well now and I think he really does care about his work :)

Marco.

We get one morning/afternoon of rain a month here it seems. "We're" famous for our sunshine and mild microclimate in this little peninsular. Alex is twelve miles up the road and it can be chucking it down there, whereas here, we may just get a few spots of rain...

More can be read about Vod and Colin here (http://www.recordshopcity.co.uk/sleeve-notes/for-the-record-shops-no-3-colin-vod-music).

Indeed. From the website:

The Record shop to me was a place to hang out and slap on the headphones with no obligation. The guys behind the counter would engage in banter and pass on their knowledge with a smile (the music was everything). Racks of temptation lay in front of you, not only for the music but also the artwork. You could order or enquire about different genres – “what’s that sound like?” , be informed on what was due in, all this added to the experience. Then the thrill of walking home with your purchase in the bag, quite often no knowing what it was going to sound like – experimentation (although sometimes hit and miss) was a big part of it. Large high street stores just cannot deliver this level of enjoyment.

Hear, hear - and neither does clicking on a bloody mouse...... Long live small independent record shops!! :mex: :mex:

So get off your backsides and support them, folks!

That's the one.

Just popped it on and compared it to my Metronome German pressing, MLP 15 372 and it sounds better, smoother and more detailed, with nice lush bass.

This (http://www.discogs.com/Gong-Magick-Brother/release/978054) is the German one, released in 1970.

The broon yin (http://www.discogs.com/Gong-Magick-Brother/release/568044) released in 1977.

No idea on any of them Andre. Maybe if they're still there when Marco goes back, he could check.

I've got Colosseum 'Valentyne Suite' on CD - ESMCD 642 which sounds very good, so didn't bother looking.

Genesis To Revelation I've also got on CD, Music Club MCCD 133 which also sounds very good.

That Purple fuzzy on the back wall to the right of Elvis 'For Everyone' is The Rolling Stones 'After-Math' i bet that's worth quite a lot nowadays if it's the right one, that Fuzzy has ''Paint It Black''..It Must have a shadow behind the wording 'AFTER-MATH to be rare..

So which one of the two pics is the rare one - left or right? Soz, dude, I don't quite understand what you mean by "behind the wording"

By a strange coincidence, I was intending on buying that album (I have all the other very early Stones albums), as I spied it the last time I was in, but had already spent enough that day, so I left it. It's pretty minty and I think he wanted £50 for it. No doubt though I could shave a tenner off of that at least ;)

I was a record collector big style till pricing killed it :steam: but a 1st issue sounded better to me in most cases, nowadays i don't care cos the CD's sound much better to my ears, doesnt alter the fact i miss the large scale artwork & hands on of Vinyl. The nearest thing i have now are my Mini LP CD's (Card sleeve minatures)

Marco
16-09-2011, 15:06
Yup, I understand that. I bet that you wish you hadn't sold all that prog stuff you had, as it would be worth tens of thousands of pounds now!

For me, I like to get as close to a genuine first pressing as I can, for the reasons you state, as with second-hand records, I can also hear pretty significant sonic differences between earlier and later pressings of the same album, but it's not the bee all and end all.

The most important thing for me when buying old records (apart from them being in near mint condition) is the music itself :)

For me, Aftermath is the best of the early Stones albums - Snaffle it up Marco, you won't regret it!
I've got a first pressing mono copy of it, but you wouldn't play it more than once - it's got more crackles than a pork scratching factory. The reissue I've got is not too bad though.

Cheers, dude! :)

Simon, presuming that it's in excellent condition, what's the max you'd be willing to pay? I will haggle, though...

Just in case he's asking some daft price for it

Just picked up on this thread, brilliant photo trip and i am wide eyed with amazement at Andre's knowledge.:respect:

Andre !! i'd go to the opticians to see if both of your eyes are working as you seem to be picking up detail like a monoscope.

Hi Andy,

How's it going, matey? Just a quick one... You don't have any connections with the Amber Regent restaurant in Glasgow, do you? :)

Lol - yes I thought it might have been you! :eyebrows:

When I worked for Bill Hutchison in the early 90s, I sold him the hi-fi system he used for playing music in the restaurant. Great guy - we had all our staff parties there and the food was superb!

Aye...he's still does very well i believe but not as well as the Ho Wong in York st.

Hutchison's !! i remember it well, thats where i got my Aiwa music centre and thought it was the real deal LOL!!! small world isn't it.

Marco

Indeed! I was there for about a year (that's about all I could stand of working for Bill) - a nice enough guy, but off his nut and a total control freak!

Still, I met some nice people there, and also learned a thing or two about hi-fi, oh and how to use a comparator!

Not been to Ho Wong, but know of it. Is it any good? If so, I'll drag Snapper there next time we're in Glasgow. Hey, we could always meet up and you could order some proper Chinese food for us! ;)

These days, we go into Chinatown in Liverpool, and so are used to authentic Chinese food, not yer pseudo-pish for British tastes! I love beef hotpot :)

Seemingly so (Ho Wong), the word of mouth is they are tops.

I love Snappers , yeah when you're in town although there's not a great Cantonese joint in town really.

Anyway, back on thread with Andre's amazing recco's.

I've eaten in both, the Ho Wong being very expensive for what you get. Food was OK I suppose.

Had many a lunch at The Amber, good food at very reasonable prices.

My favourite though, is Chinatown up in Cowcaddens. Sunday lunch is excellent. Dim sum and fu kan (?) rice. Yum.

Oh yes. Chinatown is very similar to Mei Mei. I haven't been in Ho Wong for about ten years, so maybe it's better now.

Hi guys
Best Chinese I've found in Liverpool is the Tai Pan just off the Dock Road, think it's called Great Howard Street.
It's above a huge Chinese supermarket.. so consequently is full of Chinese diners! (a good sign!)
Very very busy on a Sunday, so we normally get there on a week day...combined with a bit of specialist shopping.
Dim sum is wonderful.

Marco
22-09-2011, 08:18
Noted, Steve. We may try that one next time and compare it to Mei Mei :)

C'mon guys, you're making hungary and not even lunch time yet.

To be honest, cantonese restaurants in Glasgow has took a dip, as Snapper mentioned above, Ho Wong trade on it's initial reputation but it's just another run of the mill eaterie, old establishments like Loon Fung and Chinatown are on a downward slide as well, an Engliah based consortium called See Woo has opened up a complex where it has a Chinese Cash & Carry,Restaurant,Bakery and Printer (supply menu's), impressive but the report on the restaurant is patchy at best, never travelled over the borders as an adult but been to Birmingham Bull Ring Centre for a wedding 30 odd years ago and that was it, been in Glasgow all 40 of my 49yrs. :(

I had lunch there last year, was OK, not sure if I'd go back. Nice big supermarket, but to be honest it's more expensive than the ones at the bottom of the hill.

Generally concensus of local fraternity too, i honestly believe the one's in England are better, especially London and Manchester.

Talking of chinese restaurants reminded me of one of the more surreal moments in my life.
We'd moved to Bombay in 1997 and were taken to a chinese restaurant called China Garden.
Didn't look that big from the outside, but these guys had (illegally as it turned out) dug into the hillside to make it a big old subterranean restaurant.
so...all a bit odd to begin with.
then the waiter arrived to take our order, nice chinese guy who spoke perfect english, but with a perfect Indian Bombay accent...!!

..enough thread drift, and talking bollox.
Great thread, many thanks Snapper for posting all the pics.
Opened my eyes to a couple of shops around here that I didn't know existed.
In fact was just about to get out of work early and head to Mold, when I looked for the address, I realised via the VOD website that they are shut today...never mind, I know where he is now :)
maybe a quick detour to Grey and Pink an see what Mike's got in :eyebrows:

Lol... That's what it's all about - making people aware of the independent record shops which are out there! :)

I bet that there are hundreds more, dotted all around the country, that folk don't know about.....

So guys, why not start your own record shop tour thread in your area?

Re Neptunes (Rhyl)

I had the misfortune (lets face it, pretty it ain't) to pass through Rhyl on my way to visit a sick relative in Sbutty Cllooid (thats how the locals pronounce it) Bodelwyddan (Marco the Italo/Scottish/Welshman will no doubt correct me :) )
I called in on Neptunes and spent a happy 20 mins spending not much. I came out with a mint copy of a Skeeter Davis LP, and an equally lovely Patti Smith pressing of 'Horses'.
I told the proprietor (didn't catch his name) that he had been very well received here and he was surprised and well pleased.
I firmly believe that independent dealers should be supported.

So at the weekend me and the GF popped into Grey & Pink Records in Chester and what a nice surprise it was. I didnt actually buy anything but the missus came away with a mint vinyl copy of Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads for a very small outlay along with a couple of other bits and bobs again all very reasonably prices and in great nick.

We had a nice chat to the very friendly owner (didnt get his name unfortunately) and left wishing we had discovered G&P back when we used to live near Chester ourselves. Still, we are planning another visit next time we are back in the area (GF's parents live locally).

Thanks guys for the heads up, just a shame didnt have time to get to the Frodsham shop though.

Well, there was me and Colin in there and it was ok, but when his son turned up it started getting a bit cramped :)

I don't have a TT so unfortunately the vinyl was wasted on me (one day perhaps) but I did buy a Blues collection to listen to in the car on the way home.

What's wrong with Little Feat? Good band - although 'Down on the Farm' was a rare lapse in their usual high quality IMHO

What's wrong with Down on the Farm? The only other album that starts with Ribbit Ribbit was the Muppets.:mental:
At least Little Feat did not go on to form a government....:D
