Hi boys,
I'm thinking( just for fun) of building a line input only pre amp for use in my work system. I'd like it to be as transparent as possible and modest in cost.
The kit should be complete in terms of components and a case should be included ( though the case can be simple - it's at work).
I don't care if it's valve or transistor.
Has anybody built anything like this please? Or knows of something they can suggest?
Thanks in advance!
If I build it.... I'll post some images right here by way of thanks.

LDR based pre is IMO the most transparent pre I have ever had. Costs about £15 for the parts, but you have to source them yourself and a transformer (a cheap wallwart is good enough £10) plus you will need a case.

That looks interesting Puffy. Can you please direct me to a site with more details please?

Darren, You can do it all point to point or you can buy a PCB and matched LDR's (or at least you used to be able to) off a guy on Diyaudio. I'll see if I can get you a link.

You could also try Nelson Pass's B1 buffer/pre. PCB can be bought on ebay.

You're right, none on there at the moment. There was a chap selling on diy audio. Might be worth a look.

After having a dig around you can buy these things direct from pass labs DIY:

If you choose to go this route, I'd love to see how you get on. I am DIY'ing  to build my own preamp!

Hey Rocha,

That looks good. At that basic PCB price it would be rude not to.

Hi Ali,
Reading that thread, the B1 makes a lot of sense........

Cheers Nathan, I'd completely forgotten about that.

Darren, yes, I'm using one myself currently while the Pre 2 is having some TLC. It's very good, particularly in view of the low cost. The other good thing is it acts as a buffer also, so avoids the usual impedance matching issues of a passive pre.

I use a L/Speed into a B1 - Best detail and musicality I have ever heard. There is a good build thread on Audio Circle.

Starts at post 53.

I'd like to do a complete check on the costing of such a project before I kick off, building a couple of gainclone monoblocks was way more expensive than I initially thought it would be.

It's cases and transformers that push the price up!
