MC cartridge low or mid output version?

I shall be purchasing a Benz-Micro Wood cartridge which will be used with a A.N.T. Kora MC Ltd phono amp which is specified to have a gain of 62dB.

Which is the best version Wood to buy the SL - 0.4mV or the SM - O.8mV output?

The SM will clearly have more turns to increase the output so would this have a negative impact?

Is it better to use the SL version?

I was in a similar predicament several weeks ago when I was thinking of purchasing a benz ruby, you need to make sure that whatever output you buy matches that of your phonostage.

I have used an ATOC9 - output 0.4mv - with the ANT Kora and there were no problems with gain so I don't think this will be an issue if you go for the lower output. I think the theory is the fewer turns the better.

As long as your phonostage will allow its use, I would always pick the low output version.

I have a total 29dB (step-up) + 40dB (phono preamp) = 69dB gain in my system for a 0.4mV output Shelter and suffer from no noise whatsoever. You may have to turn the volume up a bit compared with other sources but I would go for the low output Benz.

I am using a Lyra Dorian (output 0.6mv) into a 62db phono stage. Very low noise and no hum. So yes, use a low output moving coil if you have the choice.
