One is really useless without the other. Do you have a balanced approach or are you helplessly out of balance most of the time?

For me, I'm mostly out of balance, as the music is usually the prime objective. However, as of late, I've realized that if I don't get complete spares and/or parts for my gear, I may be in for a rough ride ahead if something breaks down. For instance, I don't have replacement valves for my phono pre. If one goes, I'll be down until I can get another. (I've plenty of 12ax7's. No 6DJ8's.) That could be a few days or more! :doh: ...but, there's this LP that I want... ;)

I buy gear rarely and my recent upgrades should last me many, many years. In fact once (or if) I get a new amp , that should do me for some considerable time and the speakers are for keeps, period.

I have ££ budgets for both - monthly for recordings, annual for gear. The yearly total agreed in advance with 'er indoors. Keeps it all from going totally insane and suits me just right. :)

Gear for me - by quite a margin but then I don't like to pay more than a quid for a s/h LP ;) and I like trying new stuff like the DAT machine I've just bought off Frank Effem plus people offer me stuff like Ditton 44s, Sony DD decks and I just can't say no even though I don't need them...

Last year I put a 2nd system together, for the flat in Southend. Apart from the amp which was a budget Denon, none of it was bought at full price, either 2nd hand or ex-dem but I'm always fiddling, especially with speaker positioning and at the weekend all the squishy stuff got replaced by cones - for the better, imo.

However, this is the current level of my hifi purchases and will be for the forseeable future. I'm buying a lot more music at the moment which is the way it should be, also shows you are happy with the hardware and fully enjoying the software.

edited to add, if I had the time and cash I would be much more like Jerry with my box swapping as I'm very interested in the boxes but sadly I don't have either of those luxuries spare at the moment.

It's always about the music but I happily admit to enjoying the kit as well.

i've recently spent a lot of money on gear (almost all 2nd user and from forums like this one - as jandl100 will attest). only need speakers now to be finished.
then for the rest of the forseable future it will (at least should) be music. i've started trawling charity shops and the exchange type places that are appearing all over for cds/lps

Haven't been able to spend any money on either for a few weeks but hoping that is about to change. Proportionately I've spent way more on gear this year, but now I've found a sound that suits my ears and budget, I expect to buy a lot more music for the remainder of the year.
