Hi all!

My name is Anders and I live just east of Stockholm in a place called Gustavsberg, in the center of the Stockholm archipelago. My profession is as an IT architect in one of the major Swedish banks.

After having searched your forum for interesting SL-1200 modding options for some time I realize it's time to actually jump on board!

I am planning(dreaming?) of all the wonderful modifications that I shall do to my Sl-1200 MKII. I have started slowly by replacing the feet (Isonoe, plus boots) and will soon do a rewire of the stock arm. Saying will do, actually means having my brother in law doing it for me, as he has the skills in that area that I miss. I suspect I will keep him busy with more mods shortly :)

When it comes to my music taste it is very broad, but leaning towards pop/rock/jazz/fusion from the 70's and 80's. Bands like Steely Dan, Chicago, the Tubes, Toto, Doobie brothers and the likes.

Apart from my SL-1200 my Hifi-kit is currently nothing worth talking about. My plan however is to get the Pro-Ject SE preamp and mono power amps and likely a set of ELAC wall-mounted peakers plus a Velodyne sub. The task of putting together something on a limited budget (and that gest the wife-approval stamp) doesn't however get my pulse going as reading about all wonderful Technics mods :)

Hi Anders and welcome to our nut-house or menagerie ;).
Nice introduction, complying with all the requirements of the Compliance Officers (aka Mods :lol: ).
You'll get plenty of advice on here for modd'ing Techies, your big problem will be to choose which advice to follow in terms of which to do first,but the Isonones and boots are a good start in most peoples views - stand by for further guidance :) .

Welcome to the madhouse :)
I've fairly recently gone over to the TT dark side (Technics SL12**, that is) myself, and I'm glad I did.
I think you'll enjoy the upgrade journey.

Noticed that you've mentioned Elac speakers - they do some astounding stand mounters if you can give them room, and do not need the low end boosting with a sub - the amount of bass grunt they manage to get from such tiny boxes is unbelievable.
You do need a powerful amp to drive them though :eyebrows:

Thanks for welcoming me to your forum! I suspect I'll be spending quite some time here, mainly reading up on what others have done and what their results are. Perhaps with a post or two as my own journey takes off...

As to my speaker/amp issue I'm sad to say i'm stuck with a rather poor deal with wife that rules out any speakers that requires floor space. I know I miss out on some really exellent options :( and finding decent wall mounted speakers does not seem to be an easy task. I currently have Anthony Gallo's A'Diva Ti plus TR2 in my home theatet setup (which I am very pleased with) so my initial choice was to go for the Strada plus TR3. By chance however I listened to a tiny,tiny thing from Elac called 301.2 plus a Velodyne SPL Ultra at my local audio dealers. I must say I was rather impressed with the result. I haven't yet had a chance to listen to the Gallos so I don't have a clue as to how they compare. Price-wise however the Gallos are more than twice the price...

The choice of amplifier will be based on the choice of speakers. My plan was to go for the Naim Nait XS with the Gallos but I have read some rather excited reviews about the Pro-Ject Box SE series. As you can conclude from my reasoning above my budget for speaker/amplifier is somewhat limited. All suggestions are warmly welcome!

Also, I best warn you that I'm not at all an audiophile (might become some day :) so I don't posses the insights and expressions that you are accustomed to here in your forum. I'll do my best not to express myself to naively...

Would a Rega Brio R integrated amp suit? What it lacks in absolute deep bass "oommph" it'll more than make up in transparency when compared with a typical integrated Naim - so much more to hear and recordings through the Rega have their own character, rather than the amp stomping over the signals fed it..

Don't forget some decent little actives either. The little B&O Lab 4000's as they used to be called were really good as the drivers weren't so heavily over-equalised in the bass region. they were capable of some genuine 3-D in the image and I seem to remember that wall mounting was never an issue at all. Just a thought - don't dismiss them out of hand... You'll need a preamp of course and as long as it will drive long interconnects to remote amps, don't fret. If vinyl is your only source, a decent phono stage (which doesn't have to cost hundreds of Euro's either) and one of these (or similar) should be fine -

Don't worry about any naive comments or questions :) - you've already expressed more technical knowledge about the subject than I possess and the forum have put up with me for a couple of years or so and nearly 1,000 posts, most of which were appeals for help or advice :lol:. As we keep saying, the only idiot question is the one you don't ask, so feel free.
Keeping a very tolerant sense of humour might also help - sometimes the 'friendly banter' does go on a bit, particularly when you have two or more very knowledgeable people with divergent views, but it never gets nasty :)

Hi,

active speakers are actually what I use at the moment, namely Audioengine 5. They where a "quick fix" to my lack of amp/speakers, giving me time to do some better reserch. Apart from vinyl I mostly play audio-files on my Mac, everything from lossy formats to 24/96, usually in Flac format. Also quite a bit of Spotify (premium...). Actually I'm really fond of Spotify, it is a major reason for my rediscovered interest in listening to music...

I will update my profile to add what equipment I'm using, in short it is decently priced gear from hifi-brands like Clearaudio(Nano riaa) and Cambridge audio (DacMagic).

I will certainly look into the Rega Brio-r option, it is a new acquaintance to me. Thanks for the tip!

Spotify is a lifesaver to some...

In the real world, rather than "ours," active is the way to look, as it saves on so many horrid little tin boxes and oil-rig support style racks which blight our living environments. So many of "us" have the gear in the middle and the speakers either side almost as if it's a shrine to the great HiFi God :lol: Others of us have to disguise it somehow...

If you do go the Brio R route, look at good vintage speakers in the first instance, rather than squeaky little current models...

So the low-moderately priced amp+speaker project is finally happening!

I was pointed in the direction of Rega Brio R, and that is what I finally decided on. It is now sitting in my rack waiting to be joined by a pair of Cherry Harbeth P3ESR's that are due to arrive on monday!

Also made some upgrades to my SL-1200, Sumiko headshell, spacer/weight and soon a new counterweight from Speedy Steve to balance it all.

Not long now before I can listen to vinyl on a decent setup :)

Your techie will excel with rock, jazz and fusion, I listen to a lot of this stuff and the techie can handle it all very well. The techie is a wonderful TT, the more you upgrade the better the performance. Just ask any questions you like as quite a few of us have got pretty modded techies! Oh, and welcome! :cool:

Sounds like I'm in for a great musical experience once I get it all connected. The only thing that worries me (well, not really that much, only slightly...) is that my musical preference isn't a perfect match with the Harbeth speakers. And I of course did what -everybody- strongly discourages; buying without auditioning at home first... Well, let's see if it was stupid gamble or not.
