A similar kind of approach - distinctively abruptly molded phrasing, but somehow maintains continuity of line, and really lets the big moments explode.

I can't say how endlessly enjoyable and fascinating I find Rhapsody in Blue (or Gershwin generally) -- I like this one for the Jazz-scaled orchestration and the almost frenetic energy. Bernstein (also on vinyl) also brilliant but I think the recording is too spacious - whereas his American in Paris on side two is just about perfect.

I'm sort of addicted to Tchaikovsky at the moment. What with the Nutcracker, the first piano concerto, and Eugene Onegin all on the playlist at the moment. I'm off to see an all Tchaikovsky concert in Middlesbrough on the first.

As far as the violin concerto goes, I think I prefer Campoli / Argenta to Heifetz / Reiner. They are both excellent though, and I also like the Viktoria Mullova recording on Phillips.

The Heifetz Brahms is quite bracing and refreshing compared to the (infamously slow but still lovely) Nigel Kennedy that I have on LP. I need to find a knockout version of the Beethoven concerto, which up in till now has failed to engage me in the way that his piano concertos do. I did rather enjoy it live, though.

The Mullova Tchaikovsky disc has a nice Sibelius, too. Ozawa conducts:

Great job, too, by Haitink and the EMI engineers.

Cataclysmic 1st mvt, totally emotionally draining, awesome sq. A lot of the rest sees Gergiev relapsing to more typical form, so I usually just play the 1st mvt!

A difficult act to follow, that Mahler, so off to the other extreme, a Mozart string trio. :eyebrows:
The music is just as awesome but in a very different way.
I tried Ma/Kremer/Maisky and the Grumiaux Trio but couldn't really settle.
This one seemed to suit my mood ...

Bruckner 1st symphony from this set, conducted by Vaclav Neumann in the early 1960s I think. (Remarkably good sound for an East German recording from that time).
Who knew that Neumann did Bruckner? Not me. It's very good.

As well as revisiting some of yesterday's Reicha wind quintets and piano trios, I also came across this set of Shostakovich string quartets by the Borodin Qt.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51kCeESXfFL._SY300_.jpg
https://open.spotify.com/album/1awGX8mpyY8gG1Qx12Jocb
It's a Soviet / Melodiya recording of the full set, so comes after the set of 1-13 available on Chandos. Apparently recorded 1978-1983 with 2 of the players different from the Chandos set (1967-71).
Regardless, this is astonishing music making.

Of modern recordings, I had been impressed by the Sorell and Danel Quartets among others. But swapping between these and this Borodin set I have to wonder why they bothered! There is a sheer searing intensity to the Borodin's playing that the others don't even begin to match.

It's a bit of a shame that the sound quality, while very clear and focused is a bit dry and bright at the top end.

Having a lovely time at my desk with the HD 700s and Tchaikovsky's fourth symphony - that magical pizzicato third movement sounds to me like it fell out of one of the ballets. Heard the Royal Northern Sinfonia play this live last week (along with the Violin Concerto and the Polonaise from Eugene Onegin) in Middlesbrough and they were amazing. My Tchaikovsky kick continues...

Great voice, beautiful recording. Yum. :)

Then Sibelius' Kullervo symphony.
There's quite a few on the market now. Tried my old favourite, Neeme Jarvi - gosh he scuttles along very fast! Vanska, Parvo Jarvi, Segerstam ... nah, didn't do much for me. Settled with Panula on Naxos - very good!

Another Verdi Requiem - this time on blu-ray. Staggering recording - arguably with a dynamic range too wide for domestic playback (although I have a button to fix that) with either earth-shattering climaxes or vanishingly quiet pianissimos. The Ravel PC is interestingly done, lovely delicate precision in the slow mvt, well worth a listen.
A very exciting take on Rhapsody in Blue done with the lighter and more free-wheeling jazz band orchestration  Wonderful playing by pianist and band soloists alike. ... the acceptable face of jazz ;).

2 Art of Fugues on the trot yesterday eve.

Both with viol consorts - even in his own day Bach harked back to a previous era, and a viol consort has just the right sort of lucid precision accompanied by lushly vibrant tonal colours that suits the music amazingly well imo.

Hello Jerry - the Stimmung I play rarely as I'm not entirely convinced. I do enjoy most of it but there are times during the performance one has to chuckle.

'A fellow Gloucestershire lad as well.'

Yes and perhaps an [honorary] fellow Cambrian too. I spent some time as a leading horse riders on the high plateau of the Black Mountains of Powys, which used at least to be counted as part of the Cambrian range. Too old and heavy for such work now. Harsh in winter but an unforgettable experience.

'This is the hand of the Black Mountains, the shape first learned. Your thumb is Crib y Gath. Your first finger is Curum and Hateral. Your second finger is Ffawyddog, with Tal y Cefn and Bal Mawr at its knuckles. Your third finger is Gadair Fawr. Your outside finger is Allt Mawr, from Llysiau to Cerrig Calch and its nail is Crug Hywel. On the high plateau of the back of your hand are Twyn y Llech and Twmpa, Rhos Dirion, Waun Fach and Y Das. You hold their shapes and their names.' [Williams, People of the Black Mountains.]

This morning's spinner ~

16968

An amazing historical document - what I love about these performances is the sense of intimacy offered by the sound-stage of earlier recordings. Voices to the fore - perfect for headphone listening. Herz and Muck conducting parts of Wagner's Parsifal 1913-1928.

I've been listening to a fair amount of Adrian Boult's recordings of late, especially his Vaughan Williams (more on that in a later post, but let's just say that I'm a fan).

Listening as I type to his Beethoven's 5th on Vanguard probably from the 1960s.
It's a long way off being as excitingly taut and dramatic as, say, Kleiber. But there's a beautifully nuanced ebb & flow to it that is endearingly impressive.

⌃⌃ Concur with Kleiber's Beethoven 5 & 7, Jerry. I had Boult's Vaughan-Williams EMI The Nine Symphonies set on vinyl, but I foolishly recorded it on to CDRs some years ago to save space ⌃⌃

This year I resolved to address an ignorance of/prejudice against Mahler and while i can't say he's at the top of my personal likes I have made some headway with his stuff.

Homework - (1) World Records vinyl pressing of a live recording of Bruno Walter conducting the VPO in Mahler's 9th Symphony made in Vienna January 1938 ~

16978

First play. Not sure what to make of this 9th - it seems somewhat shapeless compared to the Klemperer/New Phiharmonia Orchestra CD I have.

(2) CD of Frank Shipway conducting the RPO in Mahler's 5th Symphony [1997 I think] ~

A compelling account supported by a decent recording and an absurdly low price on Amazon.

Hmm. I'm a bit baffled by the recent turn of events.
I usually find "historic" mono recordings unlistenable.
But last night I was having a desperate time finding a Brahms 4th that hit the spot.
I tried a lot of the usual suspects .... Wand, Karajan, Kleiber, Jochum, Janowski, Bohm, Chailly, Abbado, Klemperer. Klemperer came close, but no, not quite there.
Then in desperation I thought Furtwangler. Cor, no, he don't half maul it about. Gruesome sound, too.
OK - why not, give it a go ..... Toscanini. ..... Bingo! :yay:
Fantastic - and the mono sound is tolerable - the performance is so mind boggling I soon forgot about the sq.

Jerry, I no longer use Spotify but reading your posts makes me think I may have been a bit hasty!

I'm a total convert to live streaming.
I had Tidal Hirez and Spotify Premium subs in parallel for 4 months recently - I found (to my surprise) that I used Spotify pretty much exclusively so I just let the Tidal sub expire.

So it's Spotify Premium as my main music source.

Excellent sound quality, imho - and such a fantastic way to explore new music and new recordings. And all for a a few £ a month. Amazing.

A great reading that I'd love to have on vinyl, sadly the cost of the records means I have to make do with the CD box set instead.

Very similar experience here Jerry. When not Spotify Premium I stream my uploaded files from Google music to the Chromecast. Essentially my whole library of everything I've ever ripped or downloaded. Having said this I recently got the CD player out of the cupboard so my main system is all digital sources.

This does approx 90% of the listening. If I'm having a serious listen the vinyl comes out. Usually on rainy Sunday afternoons.

'Spotify' was great for comparing versions of the same work, but I found the general wealth of material distressing. I spent a great deal of time listening to bits of this and to bits of that. In my case 'huge choice' + 'lack of self discipline' led only to self-defeating dissipation.

Ah yes, I can understand that. You need to maintain focus or it all goes skewiff quite easily and you end up listening to nothing much in particular.
But I've got the hang of it now.

One of the wonderful things I do with Spotify is choose a particular recording of a work to settle down with ....
I start off playing one and if that doesn't hit the spot I start a different recording at the point the first one had got to. And so on, until I find one that suits. Often enough, it can be done pretty close to seamlessly with Spotify.

I thought I'd try Goodall's Ring Cycle in English and began with the Chandos CD set of Siegfried - an appalling, brightly lit CD that was painful to listen to, put me off for a while. I recently saw the whole EMI cycle on vinyl for sale on e-bay, a massy box comprising 20 LPs, and decided to buy...

Starting off this morning with Siegfried again, I'm not wholly convinced - it is so very peculiar to hear Wagner in English - but I will do my best to try to enter Goodall's world and see what happens over time.

A "re-imagining" of Gorecki's famous 3rd symphony

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/HkkQlupXb4o/hqdefault.jpg

From the Amazon description ...

Product Description
Colin Stetson is an American saxophonist and multireedist who has collaborated with an number of influential indie rock acts such as Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and Bell Orchestre. This new release 'SORROW', led by Stetson, is a reimagining of Henryk Górecki's most famous piece, performed by a 12-piece band including Arcade Fire's Sarah Neufeld, Saltland's Rebecca Foon, Greg Fox of Liturgy, Megan Stetson and more and recorded in 2015 in Brooklyn, New York. "We all have those moments when we experience a piece of music that transforms us, and this was one of those moments for me," says Stetson. "Over the years, I went on to listen to this record countless times, always determined to absorb every instance of it, to know it throughout and fully. And this dedication to a thorough knowledge of the piece eventually gave way to a need to perform it." "The concept was simple, and true to the original score. I haven't changed existing notation, but rather have worked with altering instrumentation, utilizing a group consisting heavily of woodwinds, synthesizers, and electric guitars... The arrangement draws heavily from the world of black metal, early electronic music, and from my own body of solo saxophone music. The result is an intact rendition of Henryk Górecki's 3rd Symphony, though one which has been filtered through the lens of my particular musical aesthetic and experience."

Back to Saint Saens' 2nd piano concerto - again! It's fast becoming my favourite.
This one a superb performance by Dubravka Tomsic with Anton Nanut doing his usual superb conducting. :)

It's probably sexist to say this, but Tomsic plays like a man here. Immensely powerful and bold playing where required.

You have tempted me to try Spotify keep seeing the interesting stuff you post on here and they have a 99p offer on so gave it a go
Was a bit unsure whether it would work with Linux and if I had enough bandwidth to stream to get it sounding ok
So far its sounding good and working fine
took a while to work out how to play your links from this thread
Not sure if I can afford the full price subscription but I think I will get my moneys worth for three months at 99p

^ Thanks for the encouragement, David.

It's no exaggeration to say that Spotify has revolutionised the way I listen to music.
Such a vast catalogue just a few clicks away. And the search engine facilities are quirky enough to throw up all sorts of interesting surprises, which is a great way to explore new music and new performances.

As for the expense, it is saving me £hundreds a year!
I used to budget (and spend) £50 a month on new CDs - often enough used ones from Amazon, so I got quite a lot, but still £50/month.

I now spend £10 a month on Spotify and barely any on CDs.
Win !! :yay:

Everyone has their own way of budgeting for the hobby, but Spotify works for me.

I like this.
I suspect that if it had the name Beethoven at the top of the manuscript with an early opus number then these pieces, and this composer, would be far more solidly based in the standard repertoire.
The violin sonata is a particular standout for me.
Good sq, in a reverberent kind of way.

Doing a search on Spotify of Beethoven piano sonatas I came across a full set by Maria Grinberg on the Melodiya label.
I'd never heard of her, but Melodiya issuing a full set - from the land where jaw droppingly wonderful pianists are 3 a penny? Must be something of interest.
Well, from the first few notes of Op 110 it was obvious that I was in the presence of a master pianist. Just stunningly right.

She had a hard life - her husband and her father arrested by the Stalinist authorities and murdered as "enemies of the people", losing her conservatory post she occasionally played tympani for an amateur choreography group ... sheesh ... but somehow after a while she regained roles as solo pianist.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Grinberg
This sonata set recorded around 1970. The sonatas I have heard so far (110 & 111) are just wonderful.

The whole Collins symphony cycle is available on Spotify, but I can't resist keeping this LP!

And this LP will be up for sale.
I got really excited when I first saw it - Nimbus 45rpm LP. But I'm not convinced the music is for me.

Thanks, David - yeah, I've got the full set of Myaskovsky's symphonies with Svetlanov - many gems lurk therein! :)

I've never liked Panufnik's music.
But I turned on the car radio a few days ago and was bowled over by the last few minutes of a great piece of music - turned out to be Panufnik's Sinfonia Sacra.
Great piece!

Interesting performance of the Scottish symphony by Fey. Very energetic and sprightly, and he has a way of bringing out the brass lines which are usually rather buried in the mix; makes it very exciting and surprising at times.

6 & 5 - not quite so keen on 19 although it is impressive.
Both earlier works are choral/vocal to an extent - and the pure simplicity of the vocal line, beautiful in itself, is in fascinating contrast to the often bold and majestic orchestral music.

Well paced, good soloists, lovely lucid sound quality - and a performance with soul not mere technical proficiency.

The only drawback on the Spotify playback, sadly a significant one, is that the tracks have no gaps between them so each section starts immediately the previous has finished.*

Arvo Part's 3rd symphony.
Written after the years-long sabbatical from composing when he gave up on the standard European avant-garde approach (thankfully :)) and started on his tintinnabula style of simpler (or simplistic, depending on your viewpoint :)) more minimalist music that has won him far wider appeal.
The 3rd shows hints of that style, but it does not dominate by any means.
It just provides a far more melodic and approachable work as far as I am concerned. In fact I think it is an excellent piece.

On this BIS recording you get to hear his earlier, avantgarde style, as well as the post-sabbatical 3rd symphony.
See what you think!

A superb recording of Barber's Knoxville soprano and orchestra work.
No over-projecting operatic soprano here, Linda Hohenfeld's voice is pure simplicity itself, just right for the work imo. Beautifully recorded, too,

And the other works, new to me, seem good, too.

I'd be the first person to admit that I don't really 'get' Elgar's symphonies.
I don't get the way the themes are constructed, I don't get the way the music develops, I don't get the way it comes together as a coherent musical whole as to my ears they don't.
But they have a great reputation and I do enjoy many of the various bits of which the music is constructed.
(I have the same problem with the violin concerto, don't even get me started on the big choral works).

Every now and then I come back to the symphonies and try again with new or old recordings. I figure that maybe if I just persevered I can become a True Elgarian. So many people enjoy them greatly, I hate to think that I am missing out.

I may have finally struck paydirt in the 1st symphony.
One of the truly great world class orchestras has recorded the 1st symphony, and lord be praised I am really enjoying it!
What do you mean the Thuringen Philharmonie Suhl isn't a great world class orchestra?
Surely Stephen Somary is a household name conductor?
No?

Ah well, I really enjoyed this, and am doing so again at this very moment. :)

It's probably brash and way too 'obvious' and lacking in Elgarian nobilmente for the true connasewer but it at last, finally, is allowing me to enjoy the music as a whole rather than as a series of disconnected bits.

I would be very interested in the thoughts of True Elgarian Believers here, if any.

Michael Colina.
Who he?
Modern composer of these 2 excellent concertos - one for violin, one for guitar.
With thanks to Fanfare magazine for their reviews -- another good but obscure composer.

Alan Hovhaness.
Beautiful music, not for every day - but every few months I have another dose.

In ecstasy over these two yesterday ... mystically beautiful, soaring fanfares ...

For some reason I have a feeling that Grant and Brian would both enjoy this music. :)

Missing some passages, one or two singers past their best, live, mono, yet none of that seems to matter much in this incandescent reading.

A very pleasant programme of orchestral music by JC Bach (one of JS Bach's sons) - some lovely oboe concertos.

A very powerful recital of harpsichord music, I was most impressed by this.

Wow - I love this. I came across it doing a Spotify search on recordings by the RPO.
A superbly recorded Brahms symphony cycle from 2010 - I'd never heard of it.
Traditional 'Old fashioned approach' - in these days of authentic performance I guess it could be classified as naughty but nice. --it makes me think of Jochum's excellent EMI cycle in up to date sound.

I started with the 2nd symphony and just fell head over heels in love with it. Then the 3rd, now listening to the 4th.
The performances tend to go for architectural grandeur rather than febrile excitement.

Swedish woman composer Carin Malmlof-Forssling. *Distinctive sounding, I enjoyed it quite a lot.

And then another, rather more conventional Romantic. *I like the symphony especially, although the concerto is also*good*...
