My son at 2 has developed a crazy interest in trains,he's totally obsessed with choo choo trains, Roseville where we live is an old west train town.
With a massive Rail road right in the middle of town.
So I guess it's not unexpected.
I went to a Hobbie store here that sells only train sets.
And put some money down on a O /27 guage Train set and picked up some extra cars on ebay. This coming pay day I will pay the balance and pick it up with an expansion pack of more track and extra cars.My goal before Christmass is a 40X80 track with Engine, coal car, caboose and 12 freight cars.
Here is a link to the basic set. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4447594

If your a train guy?
Please show pictures of your set up,I need ideas.
Are electric trains an American thing or are they popular in England?

I haven't had a model train set since being a boy, but in the UK I seem to remember that OO gauge is the most popular. O-27 gauge is bigger - 1 1/4" rails I think? You'll need some space for that.

Yes, 4feet by 8 feet is a normal oval so I'll set it up in the living room.
I'm really surprised no one else has posted in this thread.
I figured there would be a few electric train guys with picture and story's to tell.
Maybe we will get some pictures after some time.

As Martin suggests, plenty of folks in the UK were brought up with 00-gauge Hornby train sets, myself included. Every time my Mother announced she was expecting, my Dad went out & bought some train set stuff for the boy he hoped would soon be arriving.
I had 3 older sisters.
..............there was a shit-hot train-set ready & waiting for me by the time I was born!

When I was a teenager I used to know a girl whose Dad had a massive - I mean massive layout in the room above their triple garage, but I was more interested in his daughters than his trains.

I love Trains (when they used to be trains anyway) i had tons of '00' diesel engines

I was brought up on Triang, later to be Hornby. There were a few specialist items from other makes too. For my son we built a layout around Marklin with digital control. He eventually grew into enjoying my (I mean his...) train set.

My son is older now, I gave away all my trains (that I had kept for him) to the poor. ;)
I never had that many, anyway : a few circuits, that's all.

I used to have a massive load of OO guage track, turntables, trains, buildings etc. I used to love it but i kind of got older

If i was going to do anything these days (yes i'd like to) it would be with N gauge stuff as they are so much smaller. You could build a much more "realistic" railway as OO is quite big in comparison, to do it justice you'd need a monstrous layout as i think Chris pointed out ;)

Never had any interest in trains as a kid - cars all the way for me. (Couldn't afford Scalextric, though. :()

It's funny how an engine can cost over $3,400 with no track or cars just an engine!

Most of the people buying trains where more than 50!
It's not for kids at that price.
I'll be in the $500.00 range with the extra track and cars and that seems insane to me.

Did you know that Neil Young is a bit of a model railway freak? (well, a lot of a model railway freak, actually!) - I understand that he's known in those circles as Clyde Coil.

Z gauge Andre ?
If a house fly lands on the tracks,it will look like a monster from a Japanese movie attacking the train.
You could put the whole damned thing on a bread board.
You would need a micro scope to connect the track.

No the standard Guage of 'Z' is 6.5mm. ;)

The Japs did a 'T' scale (3mm)

Sorry but i was totally not into just building train layouts out of stock items.

It was building models to accurate scale drawing out of Brass to every last detail of the original engine.Even down to building my own track (no off the shelf track).

This & playing with stock trains are so worlds apart.

I just made the last payment on Conner's Xmas present. He will find this set up and running on Xmas morning.
Sorry, pictures taken with my cell phone.
He has enough extra track to cover 80 X 140 inches or more than 200 X 340 centimeters close to 7 feet x 12 ft. oval!
This train will be pulling 10 cars!
This O gauge kit has set me back some serious ca ching.

The set comes with an Engine coal car, 4 cars including caboose. The expansion pack comes with 3 more cars and I bought the 3 loose cars 2 of them matching the cars that come with the set and the 3rd is a Blue Ribbon Beer refer car. for a total of 10 cars.

That was not Z but even smaller.
I am confused but T scale is smaller than Z and there is TT,ZZ and Z- also.
Not sure the tiny differences.
But at some point it seems nearly a flea circus.

Great idea to have a model train set in the window of a shop in a model train set.
