Alesis M1 Active 320 USB

A while ago I was looking for a pair of active bookshelf speakers to partner my iMac - specifically for iTunes music and video replay in the study. I was not looking for Uber TOTL units just something that would give me reasonable sound reproduction at a reasonable price. I purchased these little active monitors for less than £90 and am very pleased with them. Sound is detailed and musical - mid range and highs are very good although they are a tad bass light (not that surprising given the physical size).
They absolutely need speaker supports of some description as without they are dead as dishwater but with a set of foculpod sorbothane feet they really come alive. If you are looking for a speaker system to partner your computer (as opposed to your main system) then you could do a a lot worse than these little gems at the price. Highly recommended. :)

Just wait till you've heard the next step up in actives under £500. Makes a typical separates system under a grand sound bland, rough and messy :)

Good actives work a treat with vinyl too, which surprised me no end when I first did this on "proper" active ATC's (my feeling at the time was that active 'Briks and other Linn horrors were optimised for vinyl only and not tuner/tape or CD).

I recently heard the focal active and I think it is very good but slightly more than £500 if getting a pair.

Try to find a pro audio shop (you're close enough to the west-end so there should be loads around and about I think) and see the hundreds of models available. Adam, Mackie, Behringer, Yamaha and others do some good examples I understand...

Can these little active speakers take a feed directly from a CD player?

I'm considering buying a little 't-amp' but small actives like these look a possibility, especially if child friendly (protected drive units!).
