The two main types of audio enthusiasts i see: The ones that buy modern Hi-Fi sat on their high horse that prefer to put up with cack SQ as long as they have a lump of impressive looking (so they think) aluminium sat on the rack, they, that look down on vintage enthusiant like they are a piece of sh*t & often comment buy making a fool out of both them & the equipment.

Secondly: The enthusiast that's a vintage fiend that looks down on the modern ways guy like he's so crazy spending so much money on something that sound bad & has absolutly no design character to the vintage guys eye

If your clever you can very sucesssfully mix old with new, feed from both old & new tech if you like.

However i don't & never have found it healthy wondering onto each other paths on one forum tbh..It causes nothing but arguments & the two will never ever agree even though they claim to do so.. to be honest i get sick of all the scwabbling crap & much prefer to stay away from such places these days. I'm not just agreeing with vintage because that's where my heart is but these modern gear dudes don't have come out with some gold plated BS :lolsign:

As someone who prefers the modern slant on things I would agree with you.

Of course that modern slant means I love turntables but prefer a modern cart like the Lyras, I have a pure analogue turner but it's a modern Magnum Dynalab.

The two can work together but are accustomed to your taste and preferences.

As for recording CDs to open reel - absolutely, one of the very finest systems I've ever heard was fronted by an open reel tape. I was amazed at how natural it sounded, although through the MD tuner I still get amazed listening to Radio 3, especially when the Proms are on at how good the suond quality is.

So whereas I prefer modern gear in some cases it's almost like I prefer the modern slant on the vintage side.

Still don't get valves though :scratch:

The best system I 've heard at someone's house had a Croft Pre-amp but had ECS solid state, and that was very nice sort of the best of both worlds. Very nice sound indeed.

Valves that I have heard which I've liked include VTL, Lamm and Audio Research but I know VTL and Audio Research are very much the modern end of valve amplification. All are out of my price range but are all system I'd seriously like to hear if I won the Lotto.

Ironically one of the worst was an Audio Note system. Dreadful build quality, very flat sound and God knows waht would have happened if I'd put some Godflesh on it. I think it wolud have gone and hid the corner shivering and mumbling to itself. I really don't get the fascination with that brand let alone the stupid pricing policy.

thing is the best pre-amp I've ever heard was a Lyra connoisseur - utterly amazing as was the price and I do have a completely unhealthy obsession with Karan and Dartzeel, although having heard Edge power amps I was also suitably impressed.

I've heard the cheaper end of the valve world such as Icon Audio and Primaluna and just wasn't impressed at all.

As you say you need to hear something that communicates it's strengths to you and most of the systems that have done that have been SS.

I've yet to hear a valve system in bake offs, etc.. that has really made me think that I need to invest the money.

Not wanting to start a argument but have you tried running the CD through a valve buffer or soft limiter and see if it recreates the sound you prefer by going via analog tape?

One of the finest vintage toobe amps you could hear would be a fully fettled Radford at a fraction of the cost, i did however love my old fettled Leak 'TL12+'s..If i had the space & money i'd make a B Line for a Lowther 'LL16'

Many reasons i don't do vinyl:

1:The music i listern to can warrant nearly a thousand pound per LP on the used market

2:Most records (i insist on 1st issues) are knackered, the sleeves are creased & torn etc

3: I don't have the money obviously to finance the up keep of a good record deck nor the patience

4:Records always sounded rubbish to my ears where as the CD issues bring out everything about the recording i could never hear nor enjoy on record.

The most intellegent move is the one ive chosen also giving me the Analogue experience in the process.

I don't see much of an issue here, isn't vintage hifi regarded as something maybe 20 yrs old or older.
I can't say I've met anyone in either of Andrea’s camps,maybe it's a UK thing ?
It does seem strange to be into "vintage hifi" and not listen to records! you would think
at least an old 78 player sitting in the corner.

I just checked out my hifi shelves to see where things are at today .... & I think I'm one of those deaf & blind twats who prefer a nice bit of blingy new technology. :lol:

There's my Robbie-the-Robot hi-tech speakers (vorsprung durch technic :eyebrows:), and a big lump of sexy Yankee power amp bling.

OK - I've got a vintage(ish) Denon 3-head cassette deck linked up with a definitely archaic Akai graphic equalizer that you might approve of.
And my Pioneer dd turntable hasn't seen the dealer's shelves for a few decades.
My pre-amp is new - but def follows the current Retro fashion styling.
So maybe there's hope for me after all. :ner:

Best approach is a mixture of both new, S/H modern and vintage. But above all regardless of where or when your kit comes from that it does the job for you and is compatible with your listening room. System and room should operate as one.

I have a friend, very nice bloke, but he just doesn't do music. He's got no album and when I last stayed at his he actually has no way of playing music other than radio stations through his Sky box through his TV.
