Sadly, a lot of them have gone. However, heading North up the Mansfield Road (past the Victoria Centre), you'll find "Good Vibrations" and "Anarchy Records", with a mixed bag of second hand stuff, mostly 60s-90s, but some newer discs.

Slim pickings these days...

A really long standing friend of mine owns a record shop that amongst other places, was featured on a BBC documentary on the fast disappearing places that sell vinyl.

It is called Rob's Records on Hurts Yard, an alley that runs between Upper Parliament Street, and (at the bottom) Long Row.

It is a very well know establishment, which up until recently contravened every health and safety law, but is now a million times less messy, although that was part of it's charm, with records squeezed in wherever there was an inch of space! :lolsign:

If you do get there, tell Rob Craig Strong recommended him! :)

By the way, Rob is one of the most respected Northern Soul DJ's in the UK, and I bought one of my first soul records from him when he worked in the record dept of The Coop, which is now the Alea Casino, more or less opposite the top of Hurts Yard.

20 years ago you'd have had virtually a whole street of Selectadisc... :( Seems like only yesterday.

OK,

Here is my days shopping in Notts ;)

I managed to find 6 or 7 places still flogging records and even a hi-fi store.

Firstly managed to find "Hand Signed" which is a weird place that sells autographs but has quite bigish collection of vinyl. I then found RecordonRecord which sold vinyl and some vintage hi-fi kit, not much on sale probably <100 records or so, still bought some Focus from here. Next wandered a bit further up the arcade and found another record store who's name escapes me, all new stuff here, quite refreshing, bought Miles Davis in that one. I also found Arcade records but this guy was closed for dinner and when I returned he was still out so didnt get to look in here altough this looked very promising. I found selectadisc which I gathered had been closed for years, that must have been one impressive store in its time, it was big. Bit further on I found Oxfam, whilst not a large selection of vinyl there was some and worth a rummage. Superfi seemed to be round the corner, this was a welcome surprise but it seemed to be selling crap (I won't mention brands). Finally i got excited when i saw pendulum records, this is now called pendulum 2 and sells cd's and DVD's. So Notts seems to be a strong hold for vinyl. I think it's worth a trip if you want to spend an afternoon somewhere new and experience a few new pubs, then listen to your vinyl when you get home. Hope this helps...............:cool:

Well done, Andrew! *That* is exactly how music used to be bought, should be bought, and precisely how I still buy it!! :)

Make a day of it and enjoy living in the real world, rather than simply clicking on a mouse, or being a slave to Spotify!

Enjoy yer choons!

Marco.

You missed the best record store in the East Midlands by not going to Rob's Records! :(

My old bread knife at that stage had lost the will to live, she'd been dragged through a fair few vinyl places so I had to make do and visit places like Habitat, H&M, all the usual places that as a male of the species hates :lolsign: Thing is mate there is always another day so I could still try and find Rob's Records and I'll give you a mention.

Forgot to mention, do not go to CHESTERFIELD for vinyl, its crap. I had to change trains here and 45 minutes wandering around. There are MANY charity shops but I'm afraid to say they dont sell the plastic stuff :(

Hi Andrew.

There is a great little place in Rugely marketplace... It's small but the guy who runs it (Bob I tihnk) is superb. It's called 'Those old records' I think.

Nice one Andrew!

I didn't realise "Hand Signed" sold vinyl  I'll have a look, thanks mate :)
That little Arcade is great for picking up a few little gems! The guys in RecordonRecord are audiophiles & do a good line of cheap 2nd hand kit for student/starter systems & the few Records they do have tend to be pretty good condition wise too.

Shame you didn't find 'Robs Records' since the big clean up it's much better again! You've needed a NBC suit to go in there over the last few years, the place was like a junk shop that stunk of rotting vinyl & sleeves :( He always has some nice stuff though, but with the clean up the prices seem to have gone up a little!

Thanks for 'Hand Signed' though :)

Glad I could help, will try and get the Robs Records at some stage. Also RecordonRecord did yield a neat Focus record for 3 quid which was in pretty minty nick!!
