Inexpensive turntable recommendations

Hi

My brother-in-law is after a turntable. He's not a tinkerer nor is he minted - his budget is between £50 and £100.

I have no idea whatsoever about these record player thingies ;) any suggestions?

I've got a simple Pro-ject turntable knocking about if that's of interest. Pretty simple to set up. Can find a decent cartridge for it if needed.

I agree... A Pro Ject Debut or good old Rega makes a great starter deck and the arm works with any cartridge worth at least as much as the deck :mental: The OM5e cartridge the Debut comes with can be upgraded if necessary with stylus changes, although a Debut (or better) without cartridge could have an AT120E or ortofon OM10 fitted to advantage IMO..

The ubiquitous Dual 505 comes up cheap and has auto-stop too, but its flimsy headshell and construction limits it (old "classic" Duals are rather better but need fettling nowadays).

If your bro-in-law isn't a "we" where tinkering is concerned, I'd be a bit suspicious of a good condition Thorens 150 or 160, although they'd be great if they could be accurately set up before he uses any of them..

Finally, and you'd need to check which are the best ones, SOME of the Technics decks (SLB/D/Q 2/22/3/33 etc) may make great bargain buys if they can be sited correctly. SL1500's are good, utterly reliable and can still be got below a ton still I think. Other vintage direct drives need to be chosen with great care, as there are some awful examples out there too and the classic ones are climbing in price..

You know, it would be cool if you could ask him if he could save a little more and get an SL12**mk2 for around £150. Plentiful parts, few reliability issues and a wonderful upgrading path should he be interested (the "Klub Foot" :lol: thread on here shows a very cheap isolation solution and it's got to be as good as sorbothane....)

Thank you both for your considerate answers (and apologies ops for posting in the wrong forum). I suspect the pro-ject might do the trick; my B-in-law has a larger music collection than anyone I've ever met, but is no equipment junkie.
