I had had the same setup for years since the late 80's /early 90's. An enormous pair of Wharfedale Vanguards powered by Quad 606 and a custom built bass unit powered by a Quad 520f. Used Quad 34 pre and a Rotel CD player. Many years ago I ran out of room for the bass unit and so the 520f was stored under the bed. Recently I ran out of room for the Wharfedales, I hadn't used those for several years either as I just listened to mp3s on my pc with a small Cambridge soundworks system.

Recently a friend enlightened me on the DAC thing and recommended the Neutron 5's. I sold the 520f and 34 controller on ebay, bought the Neutrons and Beresford 7520 (I use as preamp with Quad 606 power amp) and have been re-ripping my CD's to WAV instead of MP3.

My musical taste is quite varied I think - I've always loved electronic music in all it's different forms, world music especially African, Reggae and Dub - the Neutrons lack the bass for Reggae I think. Just lately started listening to some Jazz - Stanley Turrentine sounds great on the Neutrons. Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, etc .. I love the new King Creosote & Jon Hopkins Album.. I could go on and on.

I know so little about audio equipment and how things should really sound. I like when different sounds sound separate from each other and leap out. I've been amazed at how good the new setup sounds, I really had no idea I could use my PC to do that.

Welcome Peter, if you like what you're hearing from your rig then you have definitely got it right or you're getting close.. enjoy! :)

Glad you are getting into Jazz, some of it is good and some of it you will switch off, with time you'll know which is for you. You might be interested in knowing that BBC3 FM radio on a Saturday arvo 4PM to 5PM have a prog called 'Jazz Library, even an old hand like moi picks up on new stuff. Informative times for you on here mate.

Hi from me and welcome :)

The N5's are great little speakers and will open up no end with a suitable sub to underpin everything above. OK, I know AVI make a dedicated one with three amp channels (L, R + sub), but if you find this all-in-one approach too limiting, then there are other good subs qhich could be used (I used to like old M&K subs, but I'm way out of date on this one). The good old 606 is a very capable amp if driven correctly and re-caps and re-wires are the recommended way to go when the time comes. 220WPC into 4 Ohms is not to be sniffed at, especially as the 606 can also sound quite spacious and "delicate" when called to do - something many very-powerful amps aren't always good at I've found...

Hi Peter, welcome to AoS.

Looks like you've got a great system there - and some good music taste (the King Creosote/Jon Hopkins album is a cracker - I love JH, but had never had anything by the prolific KC until this album.)
