I really don't know why I bother watching pre-season....

An exquisitely dull 1-1 friendly between Villa and Braga...

Nice to see N'Zogbia, especially since he scored, and a cracking goal for Alan for Braga, but apart from that, plenty of jogging, hundreds of substitutions and a worrying look at our flimsy defense.

Shay Given has looked good in pre-season too.

I can't say I'm too confident for next season, we really will miss Downing, Young, and even Carew and Reo Coker...

Looking forward to the Shield tomorrow, hopefully should be a proper game.

Cannot really see anyone but Utd winning it this year unless Chelsea get a creative player
I really hope arsenal do not lose Nasri and Fabrgas if they lose both I do not see them being in the top 4
I think Liverpool will do a lot better and probarly City will be Utd closest rivals amd think for Europe no one is anywhere near Barca
So predictions

Aresnal
and between Tottenham and Sunderland for 6
As to who goes down well I think it be pretty tight again

I think I agree with your top 4, but I think it'll be Spurs, Arsenal, and then Everton. (and Villa somewhere around the 10th mark)

It's good to hear that Shay has looked good in the warm up - he certainly didn't quite look to be up to it this time last year.
It's been a tough season for him, what with Joe Hart taking back the No1 keeper slot at City.

Shay's a good guy, and a great keeper, and should provide Villa with some stability at the back for a good few seasons yet.

Having had a lifetime of almost total footy despair, this season must be the first that i haven't been filled with dread :lol: We've got a brand new manager, our first ever foreigner, he's German (don't tell Basil Fawlty) and the squad looks good, judging by our pre-season exploits. I really must get off my butt and venture to Griffin Park more often (there's a pub on each corner, just as well :lol:) Up the Bees!

They outplayed us for big chunks of the game, but that final goal was a bit cruel. Clichy should have either taken on the challenge for that ball out from the scramble in the Utd box, or tracked round behind Vinnie Kompany to provide defence against Nani's run. Joe Hart couldn't do much more than he did to try and stop the goal :(

Ashley Young certainly looked the biz too.

Looks like the Rags are going to hit the ground running this season.
I wonder if they'll run out of steam in the later stages :eyebrows:

Man U's attack and defence have carried the midfield since Keane packed in, Anderson will improve but he needs someone better than Carrick alongside, hence the Schneider/Modric interest. Especially now Scholes has packed it in.

Keane has been hard to replace...if one ever could ;) Perhaps DeJong could do it, but I doubt he could be prised from City's hands.

Looking forward to new season. not sure what will happen to us, I think mid table mediocrity. Happy with Given and N'Zogbia and can't believe Liverpool paid us so much for downing. Sad to see Young leave but I think he will step up a level with the better players at Man Utd.

My predictions for the coming year
1. Man Utd
2. Man City
3. Chelsea
4. Spurs

9. Villa

18. Blackburn
19. Wigan - lucky to stay up last season, not sure this one.
20. Swansea - would like them to be ok but I just don't think so

Agreed, Fletcher is indeed a trier, as is Park, and they are both very good players, but they need a little more creativity in there too IMHO. ;)

Carrick looks like a world beater if he's given an acre of space and plenty of time, but when he's put under pressure he wilts. Nor is he very effective when closing down the opposition, he rarely seems to get close enough, and is a little one paced for my liking...again he's a very good player, but the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, & Busquets have raised the bar for midfield play recently...:)

Indeed, and probably use Park instead of Nani or Young if he wants to shore things up...sneijder would be a great acquisition for any team :)

Ah well, as a Carlisle fan I reserve the right to have a glamour club, Man U are northern, and the '68 final was my first football memory...but it's not like supporting a real team ;)

As a youth I remember when we (Carlisle) were top of the 1st division (ok only for a week) and Man U were in the second...Things have changed somewhat since then.

Coventry aren't worth the entrance fee, and my other club Gretna (who I played for as a lad, when they were sh1t), have gone back to local league football. :(

I for one don't begrudge City fans their new found success, as you rightly point out you've had a hard struggle over the last 15 years...particularly whilst your neighbours have been doing rather well. :)

Should be a very interesting season ;)

What a debut from Sergio Aguero !!!
Two goals and one assist.
Dzeko and Silva also on the scoresheet

I thought Swansea played really well for the first 25 minutes or so, but gradually City settled and started turnng the heat up.
The Swansea keeper, Vorm, had a superb debut for the club too - he just might make the difference for them over the course of the season.

Bolton for us this Sunday - should be a good game.

I've just realised that Swansea have signed Danny Graham for this years premiership season...oh dear they're in trouble if that's the best they can manage. He was adequate at best for Carlisle in the 2nd division, when he was at his peak :eek:

Great win for Saints, and another today - looking good.

Loving the fact that Ipswich (hate them even though I live here - Norwich Fan for 35 years, it ain't gonna change...!) have now conceded 12 yes 12 goals in 2 games - newly promoted Peterborough (Mark (Reid Malenfant's team)) thumped them 7 - 1 today!

Hopefully I won't be laughing on the other side of my face after the Canaries face Stoke tomorrow... :eek:

It's a tough fixture, but at least you have the home advantage.
And, trust me on this one, it's one hell of a home advantage - it's one of the most boring "are we there yet "? journeys going, and if you're lucky Stoke won't wake up from the ordeal :lolsign:

going to a be tough one against Wolves, they've made a good start to the season.

Feel for the Blackburn fans though, I think you're in for a very long hard season. Although Hoillet looks class, just doesn't seem anywhere enough quality in that team.

Peed off we conceded at 90+4 but still, a point against Stoke was a good result for Norwich... At least the penalty that shouldn't have been was saved, (unlike last week's penalty that shouldn't have been...) though going down to ten men probably cost us the win. Still, on the bright side, 4th from bottom looks achievable based on the two draws so far - survival is all I hope for this season - and we're doing better than the other newly promoted teams so far... Chelsea next week could be an interesting one...

That's tough Alex - it's always crappy when your team gets kicked out of a cup competition by one from a lower division.
Been there and got the T-Shirt on more than one occasion :doh:
However, you can now concentrate on the League, and you don't have to play in the FA Cup until the 3rd round, so there's always a chance there....

My son has just asked me about the quickest red card in football, and apparently it is 2 seconds from kick-off.

The player who was red carded was startled by the volume of the referee's whistle when the referee blew for kick-off, and loudly exclaimed "Fuck me, that was loud".
The referee didn't hesitate to brandish the card :D

Well one of them, managing my team seems to be making a habit of "querying" penalties - I agree with him on the first two games, but today I'm not so sure - looked like a penalty to me, though another red card was perhaps harsh... (we must already be top of the league if sending offs are the barometer! ;))

Still, the 3-1 scoreline flattered Chelsea from what I saw on MOTD, and we can take heart from giving them a good fight. I'm still still confident we will make 4th from bottom!

Alex; watched the match and had the canaries been just a little sharper on the offense it could easily have gone the other way. The chelsky defence and Hilarious looked pretty shaky.

Until the penalty (ok) 1-1 was a fair result; the red card a little harsh.... running out of goalies.

The pundits here were positive about the canaries.

It's interesting that there are more Scottish and also more foreign managers in the Premier League, than English managers. One wonders how this will impact on the English international team in the coming years....?

I'm a great believer that international teams should be managed by natives of their respective countries, which I feel is most likely to achieve success for the country and team concerned.

Out of the English managers in the Premier league, Harry Rednapp is the only one whom I'd say is of the requisite quality to manage the English international team, so what has caused the dearth of managerial talent amongst English managers in recent times?

Are too many foreign managers (and players) being brought into the English Premier league, to the detriment of home-grown talent? And in terms of nurturing good (young) football managers, able to manage clubs at the highest level, what is the SFA (seemingly) doing better than the English FA?

Anyone care to offer their thoughts and/or have a stab at providing some answers to the above? :cool:

Some of the most sucessful club managers in England have been Scottish. This is nothing new. Good examples of this are Shankly & Busby.

Where the manager comes from shouldn't be the problem. It is down to the quality of the manager and the backing of the club.

Shankly & Busby were successful because of their character and the ethos that they set. They had a clear vision and stuck to their guns to achieve it. They had very good people skills which endeared then to the fans & the players. They were also given time to do it.

Any manager who has had some success will get a look in. This is why a number of overseas managers have got jobs in England. The main thing is expectation is high at all levels. This due to the amount of money that can be made or lost due to success or failure.

Most of the big footballing nations have had home grown national managers. I would rather have the right person for the job than someone who is just English.

There has been some poor English National managers.

Yup, I agree. But what is it do you think that seems to make Scotland breed some of the best football managers the world has known, and why at the moment Scotland is producing more young talent than England, on the football managerial front? :)

If only they were able to do the same with players!

However, there's something in the fact, I feel, that none of the English managers in the Premier League are exactly what you would call young, whereas, Ferguson aside, the Scottish ones could probably still play for their respective teams, well at least for part of the first half.... :eyebrows:

Its a real shame what happening to Arsenal as a neutral football supporter I have always liked Arsenal style of play under Arsene Wegner but they have lost some key players and have not strenghtened
I think one of the issues is there wage structure They just do not compete with the likes of City Utd and Chelsea so hard to attract the right players.I been ribing some of my friends saying Arsenal has become a feeder club but to be honest I would love to see them were they were a few years back. The premership needs that style of football
I also think a lot of the Arsenal fans are totally unrealstic they just think they can get players but Arsenal has always operated as a responsible club, my fear is that it will take a few years for them to recover and perhaps they will lose the man who transformed Arsenal from boring Arsenal into a team that was a joy to watch at their best

The image of Scottish people is of a hard, determined & canny people. Early Scottish footballers (late 19th century) had these qualites in their football. The Scottish national team did well against England during that period. English chairman & club owners started to bring Scottish players into English teams.

In the past, a number of Scottish footballers would come from harsh, tough backgrounds where football was a way out from harsh & dangerous jobs. (coal mining & ship building)

The footballers from these backgrounds were humble about their roots and it had a big bearing on their determination to better themselves.

Even the accent can come across as authoritative and fairsome. Which is good for managers.

But I do think, the best managers are the best due to their character rather than being Scottish. I think it is the perception what people think Scottish managers can do.

I don't see many young Scottish managers coming through. If you look at the the four divisions in England, there are only 13 Scottish born managers out of 92. If you take away, Alex Fergusion, Kenny Dalglish & Alex McLeish out of that group, the rest haven't mainly had major success.

Paul Lambert has had back to back promotions but is still has to prove himself at the top level.

Steve Keen days may be numbered. Dougie Freeman stopped his team going down, Paul Dickov nothing stands out much there, Malky Mackay has made a good start at Cardiff and Darren Fergusion has had 3 promotions with Peterborough.

You can find young English managers who have do as much or more in their careers.

However, there's something in the fact, I feel, that none of the English managers in the Premier League are exactly what you would call young, whereas, Ferguson aside, the Scottish ones could probably still play for their respective teams, well at least for part of the first half.... :eyebrows:

I don't see what point you are trying to make. There are four Scottish born managers younger than 50 year old Alan Pardew but most of them were no great shakes as players. I wouldn't be surprised if Mick McCarthy & Steve Bruce could run rings round them.

I don't see "being young" is the sign of a great manager.

I'm more worried about the number of players leaving and the lack of players coming in, I may hang around the the training ground as I may end up getting a game - I'm very cheap.

From what I've seen of Man City so far this season they won't need Suarez.

I think Dzeko's 4 goals at Spurs were as good a hat trick (+ 1) as I've seen in a very long time and in Silva thay have someone who is better at pulling the strings than Suarez at the moment.

I hope Man City can stick it out all season, even if they nicked a couple of Villa's best players.

I like Mancini, have done since seeing him play for Sampdoria, and I think he's building a very good side there at the moment.

QPR looks like they have come to stay in the PL and City seems to have dropped the italian defence mentality for now; for sure it will be a entertaining match.

I saw Cahill coming in with both feet, and I saw Kompany jumping to avoid them.
I've yet to see a human being who's capable of maintaining unassisted non contact with the ground, and Cahill was underneath Kompany's feet when he landed.
Seems to me that Cahill brought it all on himself.

I didn't see any petulant retaliation from Kompany either (unless looking pissed off at someone who should know better lunging at you is regarded as petulant retaliation).
That, quite rightly, would have been a booking at the very least.

Cahill got just reward for his actions - if he hadn't leapt in like he did then he'd have made it to the end of the game without having to be helped off.
It just pisses me off when someone claims that such and such player's injury had cock all to do with the injured player's own actions, which is what Moyes was implying.

I wasn't at the game, but I watched it live on the goggle box, and had the glorious detail of the event replayed almost instantaneously, and yes it looked as though Vinnie deliberately stamped on Cahill, which may or may not be the case.
It all happened so quickly in real time that it's not possible to draw proper conclusions, and slow-mo replays distort that perspective.

As for the SPL - last time I saw a Celtic v Rangers game they were holding hands, skipping together and picking daisies NOT !!! :ner:

Just watched the Norwich v Sunderland match, and I am a quite contented Canary fan (up until the 86th minute!) - Sunderland never really woke up until then, but even so we played some good football and deserved the win - coming after beating Bolton away last week, and 8 points racked up after 6 games I'm happy so far, given the cost and humble nature of our squad - Man U next week might be a different game, though! And finally we didn't give away a penalty either! I think it is going to be a very close league again this season - in the bottom half, especially.

He's definitely in breach of contract.
I can see an immediate unpaid and indefinite suspension looming for him (not that it will hurt his pocket), with a total ban from the Club's training facilities.
City will not want to have him anywhere near the first team.
I suspect that there could be a legal action taken by the Club too.

I suspect that he'll bugger off back home to sulk.

The transfer window doesn't open until January, so it's a long wait, and I can't see any of the big boys being interested in bringing in a player then who isn't a) match fit, and b) can't be relied upon to do what he's contracted to do.
So it looks like he's shot himself in both feet.

And while he's away he can't play for anyone else in a professional capacity at all, as City have his registration.

I'm thankful that City got the result tonight - it didn't look like it was going to happen for much of the game.
Then Aguero got on the end of a cross into the goalmouth in the 94th minute, and we're 2-1 up, and we'd sunk the Yellow Submarine.
Talk about cutting it fine.

Thankfully we're not out of the running yet, but there are still 3 more games to decide who's who in our group.
Next game is Yellow Submarine at their place.

If you want to watch a traditional blood and guts football match, not involving overpaid and overgrown fairies, might i suggest either Brighton & Hove Albion or Brentford :yay:

I have to respond item by item.

a) - You cannot book tickets for a Premiership match any more than a month in advance - some of the clubs are working 2 weeks in advance, my beloved Manchester City are around about 1 month.

b) - Prices vary according to the club in question, and the visiting team. The last match I attended with my son was Manchester City v Wigan Athletic, and it cost me around £50 all in, and that included car parking and fuel costs.

c) - Keep on taking the anti-bitterness pills. If you want to see blood guts and passion just look at the highlights of today's match at Old Trafford.

As an aside, I remember that Brighton & Hove Albion were in the 1st Division and reached the FA Cup final in 1983.
The game was a draw, so a replay ensued.
A schoolmate of mine played in both games.

The costs of attending a Green Bay Packer game are high too. I've been on the waiting list for tickets for 30 years (I'm now number 3700 on the list). It's probably a minimum of $100 to see a game. I've been to a few games with tickets I was given, and it's quite an experience.

Strat, i'm not bitter mate, i wish City all the best. But surely no one can argue that the wages are obscene and loyalty is a word consigned to the dictionary, in most cases anyway? Once the league implodes, we'll be be able to get back to football as it used to be before bsb came along and sold it down the river. I look forward to that day :cool:

Mario has shown flashes of inspiration from the moment he landed - I've never seen anyone go from stop, to full speed, to stop again like he does.
I'm just pleased that he's settling down a bit, and putting the team before himself.
I don't think we've seen the best of him yet, and now he's served his 3 game ban in Europe, who knows what he can bring to the team's performances ;)

It's good to see in Mancini that a top player can also be a good manager, usually it's the mediocre ones that succeed...

He seems to have excellent tactical awareness, certainly enough to realise that football matches are won or lost in midfield.

I think this sort of defeat has been coming for Utd. they could have shipped a bag full against Chelsea but they failed to take their chances, and they've even struggled to cope with mediocre European opposition.

Fergie has failed to find a suitable replacement for both Keane & now Scholes, pitching Fletcher and Anderson against a 3 man city midfield was always going to be a non contest.

You can have the best strike force in the world, but if you can't gain/retain possession they just become expensive spectators, and without a genuine enforcer in midfield the back four are getting badly exposed.

I was hoping that either Barry or Milner would be up for grabs, but they seem to be settling into the City squad very nicely...:)

Big shock today - City playing United in the 3rd round of the FA Cup at the Etihad Stadium.
Not only that, we've got to play Liverpool 3 times in January - once in the league, and twice in the Carling Cup. As if the last time we met wasn't enough for a while - Luis Suarez must still be black and blue from throwing himself on the ground in the attempt to cheat his way to victory.
When he fell to the floor holding his face after stamping on Vincent Kompany's ankle.......

Truth is that money brings in players, but doesn't necessarily make 'em a team.
There are 24 more league games to go before the end of the season, and I expect City to falter at some point.

For now I am enjoying three words strung together - unbeaten Manchester City, and I'm pleased that the team seems to become a more cohesive unit with each successive game (barring the Champions League games :doh:).

I am relatively new to EPL and would like your feedback on the following observations:

1) Is Newcastle for real? I have to say I have enjoyed them the most from what I've seen so far. They seem to contest everything deensively and have been impressed with Steven Taylor and their goalkeeper. Great match against ManU.
2) I have only seen Blackburn play one match, against Chelsea, but they gave no quarter and played hard the entire match. They seem to have even less talent than Newcastle and I got the impression that the player they count on to score is not quick enough and does not have the skills to compete with the better teams defenses.
3) I find Everton confusing? Not really sure where they place in standings.
4) ManU is maybe the most talented but misses alot of shots on goal, ManCity plays the best 'keepaway' in the Spanish tradition and has beautiful footwork, and Chelsea has a little less talent than the previous two but plays harder than either.

- I may be totally off the mark. The only opportunity I get to watch EPL matches is when my friend records them for me. Thus, my sample size is small and I'm making judgments with little (1 or 2 games) exposure. Please respond, I've got it bad. :cool:

The top division in England stopped being a proper football division when bskyb bought the viewing rights in the early 90's. Since then the whole concept of fairness and level playing fields has made way for greed and gluttony. To cap it all, the division now employs "fairies" from overseas who fall over and die at the slightest hint of a tackle or bodily contact. Allied to this, their prescence in this division prevents home grown talent practice and experience which in turn snuffs out our national teams chances of ever winning anything again. I wouldn't go to a premier league club if you paid me. Just my opinion ;)

Take any advice I give with a pinch of salt (or not), 'cos I'm biased about things.
I have been a supporter of Manchester City all of my life.

Games to watch - Chelsea v Manchester City this coming Monday - Chelsea have not had a good season so far, and have not been getting results, even when they've been all over the opposition.
Their match last night in the Champions League was just like watching the Chelsea of 2005, and they played astonishingly well.
If they can repeat that form in their next league game we've got our hands full.

City are on top of the table with some impressive stats (48 goals scored in 14 games:eek:), and some very strong wins behind them (I still smile when I think of the match at Old Trafford - it's the first time I've seen t'other lot switch off before the final whistle:) ).

verbal abuse is different from racial abuse. Suarez admitted making racist remarks to Evra, because apparently it's acceptable in his country. personally I feel if you make offensive remarks towards someone purely because of the colour of their skin or cultural background you deserve everything you've got coming to you. there is no reason or defence for it

you have a 3 match ban.
PROVEN guilty a 2nd time and its an 8 match ban.

but when the only real evidence is Suarez' own admission, 8 game ban is rediculous.

Playing the Sunderland match as I type - how we weren't a couple up by half time I don't know :doh:

In recent seasons we've had a tough time of it up at The Stadium Of Light.

Today was one of those games :rolleyes:

Our problem has been the schedule - we play Liverpool on Tuesday night (Premier League), Manyoo on Sunday (FA Cup), Liverpool next Wednesday (Carling Cup), with another 3 to play before the end of the month (including Liverpool at Anfield in the Carling Cup 2nd leg), so Mancini has no option but to rotate the players, 'cos no-one (except for Joe Hart) is expected to play all of the games.
We also lose the Touré brothers for the duration of the African Nations Cup, so we lose an attacking midfield player at the very least.

January is going to be an interesting and difficult month.....

There is no luck involved, we were pretty awful.... The first goal was inexcusable, and McLeish's response was to put on Hutton, who is a liability...

Ah well more shock results though, fair play Fulham, below us in the table only alphabetically it seems! (exact same goals scored for and against, exactly same number of points)

Fair play to your Norwich, the way you're going, you'll definitely be in the prem next season... probably finish above us!

We don't have a bad set of fixtures in January, I hope we manage to get some points along the way or we really are in trouble....

re: the villa game yesterday, I think the villa players are taking it in turns to be awful.... It used to be Stephen Ireland, then it was Alan Hutton, but both of those have played ok the last couple of games. At the moment Stephen Warnock is an utter liability, how he is getting a place in the team and keeping it for 90 minutes is beyond me.

Bear in mind we have Warnock playing left back, we have a perfectly good left back in Ciaran Clark playing in midfield, and we have N'Zogbia on the bench :scratch:

What is this about never a sending off?!

Look at the facts.

Kompany is one of the top defenders in the world and knows if he takes both feet off the ground, which he did, in tackling someone he will be sent off.

If Naini had not jumped, and as a result, avoided contact, he might have been seriously injured.

If Foy had let that tackle go and the next tackle had connected and seriously injured a player he would have been rightly criticised for not making the right decision in the first place.

For those who have played football, at any level, they will know it is difficult enough playing in those greasy and rainy situations without reckless tackles made without any regard as to whether the player tackled would be maimed, or not, without even mentioning the highly charged nature of such a game in the first place.

You can still turn 'em over - this Utd. side has not got the powers of concentration to go a full 90 minutes & Fergie time against a determined team with 11 players on the field.
They made far too many unforced errors today.
Get in their faces and don't give them any room to play and you've more than a fair chance.

And if Scholes plays and does as well as he did today you'll get the ball off 'em easier than you think.
Who knows, maybe he'll get himself sent off too ;)

Oh yes, it was quite a match to watch for a neutral, great goals, red card, end to end stuff, terrifying to watch as a Villa fan, we were dreadful!

I was dubious about Robbie Keane, but I take it back, even though we only have him for 4 more weeks, a few more performances like that will make him well worth it.

I feel sorry for Wolves too, always had a soft spot for them and also Mick McCarthy.

fergies comments were rediculous. did he sell cantona after his kung foo kick on a spectator?
actually i cant remember if he did or not, but it was a stupid comment anyway.

Evra is misguided in his belief that he holds the moral high ground.
His behaviour in full view of the rest of the world showed that.

Ferguson's comments were rediculous - there have been many, many occasions over the years when one of his players has properly stepped over the line, and yet received his full support at best, and no comment at worst.
Anyone remember Keane's tackle on Haaland?
Did Ferguson come out in condemnation of Keane?
Did he f##k!!!!

Actually the Suarez/Evra thing pales into insignificance when you think of Keane's ABH on Haaland.
Someone got off very lightly over that one.....

suarez has obviously been forced into making an apology.
he will leave in the summer, no doubt.
shame as he is a great player. (but a bit of a knob).
Evra on the other hand is 100 per cent Knob.
and should not play football ever again, not even in his back garden.
he should go for a career in acting and then maybe run for president(france , of course)
a season to forget for me, even if we win a cup.
hope city win the league.

Let's face it, chaps, it'll be a long time before England win another trophy in international football, or are even getting to semis and finals.

There are too many foreign players playing for the major teams now in the Premiership, stifling the development of English talent, for real success to happen, internationally, anytime soon!

And because of that, the other major world footballing nations are currently way ahead of England, who are now trying to play catch up. Unfortunately, the departure of Capello, and the waiting for another manager to settle in, will not speed up that process.

I too think that it will be a long time tlll England win another cup. England is good enough to get to the quarter final and maybe the semis.

I don't fully think it is due to foreign players. If you go back to time when there were few foriegn players and alot of quality English players, the 70s, England didn't win anything then. In fact England didn't qualify for the 72 & 76 European championships or the 74 & 78 world cup.

It has a lot to do with how we play football in the UK. Also on how we coach kids and teenagers.

Whoever gets the job will have a tough job in the short term.

As a Celtic supporter, I'm actually quite saddened by the news. I'm certainly not gloating, as I don't want success for my team at the expense of the misfortunes or downfall of another, especially our main rivals.

I suspect that Neil Lennon will be having mixed feelings, too. Now there's a 14-point gap, will the players lose concentration and become complacent in the race for the title, thinking it's already won?

Keeping players correctly focussed and motivated can be a tricky job. Good players respond better to pressure, so this situation could actually BACKFIRE on Celtic, as the Rangers players will now be more determined than ever to turn things around. And of course, the pressure is now off of Ali McCoist, who if he won the title would be a hero... It also now completely devalues any Celtic win!! :doh:

In that respect, I actually think what Rangers have done, by bringing this situation to a head now, is quite clever!

Anyway, the possible ramifications of this situation for Scottish football, if Rangers do go to the wall, are very serious indeed.

I know that many Celtic fans will be singing and dancing at the news, but I'm not one of them. Whoever is responsible for getting Rangers into this mess needs their arse kicked. Craig whyte is simply the scapegoat, but the reality is that this situation is the culmination of YEARS of mismanagement and bad business decisions.

Personally, I blame the huge over-spending of the Dick Advocaat years, where he and David Murray, with his 'speculate to accumulate' financial policy, had big ideas and were trying to secure Champions League success for Rangers, and spending ludicrous amounts of money that the club couldn't afford trying to achieve that, buying more than a few 'dud' players in the process. Tore André Flo, for £12m, anyone?? :mental: :mental:

Bert Konterman for £4.5m?? And there were plenty of other similarly expensive 'duds'! Remember that this was 12 years ago, and huge money for an SPL team to spend, especially when in terms of the Champions League success (they had deluded notions then of winning the competition or at least getting to the final) it ended in failure! Unfortunately, Rangers are now reaping the damage mainly caused by that era....

I sincerely hope that the club can get out of administration as soon as possible, but the current and potential total debt levels are frightening! From the BBC news website:

It was reported last week that the chairman had also borrowed up to £24m against four years of future season ticket revenue from Ticketus.

Most serious of all, Rangers awaits a tax tribunal decision over a disputed bill, plus penalties, totalling £49m.

Mr Whyte was reported on Monday as saying this potential liability to HMRC could reach up to £75m if the club lost the tribunal.
