Ok, that's sorted then :eyebrows:
a 50% chance of winning next week's lottery, at the moment... :)
Currently a 1 in 6 chance of your Reserve album being the choice for next week - looks like I shan't be needing any ERNI computer shenanigans to select the luck winner on Monday - just an old-school analogue dice! ;)
(In other words - get your reserve album of the week choice PM'd to me over the weekend, folks - you've got to be in it to win it! :))
BUMP - will be making the draw later this evening, so last chance to get in. :)

Come on then, spill the beans... Get Lancelot spinning & lets see who's going to be unpopular in the music stakes tomorrow
I'm pleased there were at least six entries, no idea why I volunteered what i did :eyebrows:
Ah well, you only live once
Cheers Mark - I'm gonna leave it a couple more hours just in case anyone else wants to throw their entry in - still only 7 entries, so could easily be your lucky night people! (And I'm kind of with you on the choice Mark, mine seemed like such a good idea part way through the second bottle of wine on Friday night... :eyebrows:)

I know there will be cries of fix... There are in fact 8 entrants, and so using http://www.random.org/ I generated a random number, and guess what - it came up with MY number! So I did the honourable thing, and said re-draw - and it came up with my number again!
So I'm really sorry chaps, but not only have I won, but I'm really not sure you are going to be impressed with my choice - which seemed such a great idea at the time... I will guarantee though, that it will be a unique week in the Album Club's life so far...

I think we're going to have to spin the wheel again this week to select someone from the subs bench. Alex will be along later, I'm sure, to do the honours.
However, we have been whispering behind the curtains about how this can be managed better. There will be an announcement shortly.
Sorry everyone - been up to Leeds for a couple of days then London all day today.
Well, not heard from either ColinB or Alan Sircom, so that means this week is another reserve list lottery - and the winner is...
Paul (Audioman!!!) - I think I'm going to have to get an independent adjudicator in for the future! Are you able to do the honours, Paul?

Here's an idea I got from a passing Boy Scout:
Be prepared - do your Album Club submission in advance, images in place & formatted ready to go. But type it out as a PM to yourself. When the time comes to whip it out, it's there in your inbox, formatted with tags & ready to roll.
:eyebrows: did that from day one Chris, had 3 ready.... already used 1, but not so sure about 1 of the 2 remaining now. It's a good idea though, as I got called on at the last minute myself and up it went.

Am I the only one that is slightly surprised/dismayed that with the large membership of this forum we have generally less than 20 votes for most of the album club choices...?
If one can assume people are too shy/busy too comment they can at least vote with a brief knowledge of said album?
If people don't have access to spotify they can use Youtube or even Amazon (29 secs per song) to get a perspective and state the fact.
I think as members of a forum they should make an effort.
But maybe that's just me, I'm just saying...:)
This week should be Jac Hawk (Mike) - dropped a PM to him yesterday, but not seen anything back yet - so we may be having another lottery this week...
Please people - these are the remaining dates and allocations - please try and make your week if you can.

With week 25 done and dusted that means we have very nearly had 6 months of Album Club! We've reached the end of the original list, so a few questions if I may...
Was it successful in your eyes?
Do you want to start at the beginning, and do it all again? (Anyone want to drop out, let me know.)
Would you change anything about how it is being run?
Is there anyone who has yet to have a go who would like one before we go round again?
Speak up, or forever hold your peace - I will assume a lack of response to mean you are happy to carry on as we are. :)
Just keep it going in a rota, adding new members and dropping out those who want to stop as required. It's working well, in my view (but again I need to catch up on two missed weeks).

Following recent contributions to the album club I am wondering if members are trying to be too left field and different. Haven't voted on a couple as I could not even listen to them and would be unfair to comment. I have listened to Welder's choice and will give my not entirely positive view in due course.
Perhaps it would be better to stick with something of wider appeal (not necessarily well know) that is a release from either the last 12 months or fall under the term 'classic' popular music. I think this might stem the decreasing levels of participation.
:sofa:
Paul.
My last choice was quite left field so totally guilty of this but my previous choice was a quite famous album, so me I want to mix this up with my own personal choices. I totally understand why people would not like the music I chosen; music is so personal
I would mainly see the album chart of discovering the odd gem
Oh great, endless rounds of "classic" albums played on "classic" kit with carefully constructed critique (after all, we wouldn't want anyone thinking we weren't all exceedingly intelligent and well informed, would we ;))
I mean, God forbid we hear, or try anything different. Good lord, where would it all end? Before you know it we wouldn't be able to take ourselves as seriously and the great unwashed might even be able to see we don't have golden ears and impeccable taste.
Lets just ban stuff; anything that makes us in any way uncomfortable be it modern equipment, or music, or even the odd forum participant.:D

I do think we should mix it up a bit more. I just think some choices have been a bit too left field. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word 'Classic' as I don't want just to hear early 70's classic rock. Just something that might appeal to a wider audience so some of us feel we have been introduced to some great music for the first time.
I think the Laura Nyro and Propaganda albums from a few weeks back fall into that catagory. I was pleasantly surprised my choice introduced quite a few to Alan Hull for the first time with positive comments. With one or two recent 'alternative' choices I had enough previous knowledge to know I was going to dislike them before even listening.
I do understand what you mean Paul but I just cant see how you can achieve it. :)
I would rather people put up what they wanted and those who don't like it just need to write something like "I would rather have root canal surgery than listen to another bar of this" and wait for the next offering.
The problem is as I see it, there is no "good" music as such that we are all likely to agree on.
There does seem to be a problem in getting people to participate, but that seems to be a people and Internet problem, rather than a musical taste problem.
I watch the board fairly regularly as I work with the computer and often see loads of people logged on, but maybe one or two posts. If they've bothered to log on, then why not participate, is my view.
So, you might make a complete pratt of yourself every now and then.....pffft, I do that every day.
I don't know what the answer is for getting people to join in. This is a very well mannered forum compared to most I would suggest and whether or not you like the music, I maintain, it would be hard to argue from reading the "playing today" thread that the taste isn't wide enough to attract most people who have any interest in music.
Maybe many aren't that interested in music and are more into the kit.
Whatever it is, I cant see restrictions, and that is how it would have to be done, being the answer.

Well personally, I don't think the world needs another review of Dark Side of the Moon, so I'd prefer to hear what people think about music I wouldn't normally listen to, or know about, on the off-chance that it might uncover a new gem.
'Left-field' is kind of relative to where you are positioned.
Yes indeed, all music is good music for someone. Let's keep it personal and varied.
Well personally, I don't think the world needs another review of Dark Side of the Moon, so I'd prefer to hear what people think about music I wouldn't normally listen to, or know about, on the off-chance that it might uncover a new gem.
'Left-field' is kind of relative to where you are positioned.
+1 :)
I sort of know what Paul means - but I'm not convinced people are deliberately going for left-field stuff just for the fun of it... And in any case, one man's left-field is another man's mainstream...?!
That said, if interest is dwindling then maybe we need to try and work out why and if there is anything we could or should do about it - I personally don't think there is much we can do - maybe the novelty has worn off a bit for some, but I still really look forward to trying something new, and am almost disappointed if it is an album I already own!
Anyway, all comments gratefully received and if it needs fixing, we'll fix it if we can. :)
It's also a lack of time, Alex. I feel that I should evaluate the whole album before I'll comment and vote, and some weeks I just don't have the window of opportunity. Then I'll do three or four in a row. I'm behind by that much now :(
I think that's true for most of us - I was wondering earlier whether maybe we should try extending it to 2 weeks per album? Any thoughts, peeps?
I still enjoy it as it is. It would get dull in the extreme if it was Dark Side of the Moon/Rumors/Blonde On Blonde week after week - even though I love all of those. My choice of Tangerine Dream's Rubycon last time might be considered 'left of field', but it's very much my mainstream and has been for 30-odd years.
I've a short-list of 3 for my choice next week and this discussion may well influence which one I go for - or it may not :eyebrows:

I enjoy listening to stuff I have no idea of - it's good fun and even better if you end up enjoying it.
I understand if you haven't got the album or access to listen for free but what's the harm in listening to something you've never heard before ?
As hifi enthusiasts are we only allowed to listen to certain stuff ?
I've not got access to my streaming service at the moment as I'm away from home with work but when I get back I'll be revisiting last weeks and this weeks one.
I also do the album club on the Wam and there's a similar problem there as well.
I thought it was supposed to all be about the music ?

It's difficult to restrict the type of material put forward I know. An Album the contributor loves may well be hated by everyone else. I just think records that are just 60 minutes of drumming or rapping are better avoided. It's probably easier to ban the usual hi-fi demo subjects.
It would be easier to have a banned list of well known audiophile test records but nobody here is likely to put forward DSOTM or Rumours etc etc are they ? as they are too familiar. Ironicaly the only record that fell into this catagory was "Dire Straits" and this got the biggest reaction both positive and negative.
Perhaps the answer is to have an 'alternative' music album one week and a more mainstream rock or pop title the following week alternating.
Ironicaly the only record that fell into this catagory was "Dire Straits" and this got the biggest reaction both positive and negative.
Indeed, Paul, and it was most satisfying putting forward an album that many people thought they knew (from the group's reputation) but seemingly didn't. All the reactions were fun to read and I considered it a bit of a success.
I personally don't want to see a banned list. Who is to say what should be banned? And why can't someone offer DSOTM for listening if they so wish?

What's going on with Spotify  I have only ever had the basic service which used to be time limited to 20 hours a month... I say used to as there doesn't appear be a timer counting down any more
Not only that but it's sounding very fine indeed ;) Ok, so I still get adverts, but things most definately aren't what they used to be....

It's been like that since I have been using it and SQ is certainly better than I expected. If it's a better free service I wouldn't complain as that is unusual. :)
It's fine for evaluation on the computer and I don't think the upgrade is going to be good enough for serious listening.

31-03-2012, 18:59
I think the twenty hours is actually 4 blocks of 5 hours - ie 5 hrs per week, Mark. The disappearance of the timer is a rather crude device to get you to sign up to the subscribed version - the theory being that if you keep getting cut off when you're not expecting it, you'll eventually get pissed of and pay up for the full bifta. I think the timer pops up in the last hour or something - but it's coloured red to make you reach for your credit card!

The process of making my last choice of a subject for the Album Club threw up some questions that I never really answered, but maybe canvassing a few opinions might help for next time.
Obviously, we're all hoping that everyone gets a chance to listen to something new every now & then but the nature of the thing means that almost all of us probably want to listen first then buy an album if we like it. There may be one or two folks who buy every album first, I suppose, but it's unlikely.
So Spotify is great but not everyone uses it and there are some important gaps in the Spotify catalogue.
There are alternatives where you can legally listen to albums but, generally, the quality is lower. So I'm interested to know if the Album Club concept can stand up to occasionally using a service like Grooveshark, where you don't have to sign up, but which we may be able to use. Even when something is available on Spotify, it may also allow some members to take part if they can listen this way?
The other question I'm interested in asking folks is how people would feel about an album that's available on Spotify, but not currently available new.
Any thoughts?
For me its about sharing music and hopefully being insipered to purchase or hunt
As long as people can hear the music it does not matter by what site and I a, also feel totally ok about hunting for something that is not easy to find, sometime the thrill is in the chase
Tend to think one a week keeps a sense of antcipation
Good points, Chris. I don't see why anyone would not have at least a Spotify free account, but I could stand an album choice with YouTube or any other samples to listen to. It would be good to know that hard media is available to properly add it to my collection if I so wish, but I know I'm going against the flow here. However, there's nothing stopping me from downloading files and burning them to a disc so that I do have hard media, or streaming them to my Touch.
I would say: don't feel limited by the media choices, go for any album you want to suggest for Album Club.

I would say: don't feel limited by the media choices, go for any album you want to suggest for Album Club.
I'd agree as long as there are links so we can all spin it at the end of the day :)
Yes, anything is OK for me. I have sometimes bought album club choices (both on CD and vinyl) after just a quick listen on YouTube.
I struggle a bit with Spotify as my main system music PC is a stripped-down Linux box running XBMC. Until recently, I couldn't access Spotify on this without installing a Windows emulator - which I wasn't prepared to do.
However, a plug-in for XBMC - Spotimc - has recently been released (though it's currently in 'alpha') which provides access to Spotify from within XBMC, Only problem with this is that it requires a Premium Spotify account to work - and I don't always have £10 spare every month to renew it, so (as at the moment) there are times when I can't use Spotify - That's why I haven't yet heard Mark's current Album Club choice.

Good points, Chris. I don't see why anyone would not have at least a Spotify free account, .
I dont have a problem with spotify as such its just they currently require a facebook login, it seems difficult to sign in without access to facebook. I committed facebook suicide over 2 years ago and never looked back and wouldnt want any involvement with that site again so spotify is off the cards for me.

Facebook is not related to Spotify. They now have Facebook link I think. I am on Spotify and don't have a Facebook account. I probably never will as I think the whole concept is potentialy dangerous in terms of personal privacy.
Nope, you don't need Facebook for Spotify (or vice versa) and there is no need to link the two if you don't wish too, I have Spotify and Facebook, but the two are entirely separate ;)
honestly guys, i wish i was having you on... sportify makes you create a facebook account... please try to download it and set up an account. there must be something i'm missing.

Ah, just as I figured :(
This is what I would do.....
Interestingly, Spotify employee Darren's "official" response to the GetSatisfaction thread is that, while there's no way to sign up for Spotify without a Facebook account, this "does not stop you creating the Facebook account adding nothing to it and making it totally private as the Facebook account does not have to be actively used."
Get a Joey email address from Google, use that for Facebook and call yourself Joe Bloggs or something and job done ;)
Thanks Tim - you've beaten me to it clarifying the situation - and highlighting the solution - as long as you are ok with a dummy Facebook account... which kind of makes the whole thing a bit pointless, really.
I was just going to say the same thing: make an FB account, set it to completely private and never use it! It's just a hurdle to getting Spotify up and running.
Yes it had occured to me to create a dummy fb account but I couldnt in all conscience even give the zuckerberg empire yet another profile to sell stuff too.. nor would i ever want them knowing my musical tastes or otherwise.
I dont mean to sound like one of the tin foil beanie crew, I stopped being paranoid years ago. At the end of the day I'm just a reserved guy who thinks the facebook marketing beast has quite enough user accounts for the time being and whilst it continues spotify has lost another potential customer.

This is Frankly a disgrace and another infringment on personal freedom. Worrying development as it will inevitably result in Facebook aquiring Spotify. There is something suspicious about all this. Problem is I clicked on the new user agreement when updating on the grounds that reading it makes no difference since if you want the service you have to agee (sign your life away). This is the same as all terms and conditions on the internet. Nobody reads them and the Lawyers must know it.
This is the same as all terms and conditions on the internet. Nobody reads them and the Lawyers must know it.
I always read them ;)
This is Frankly a disgrace and another infringment on personal freedom
Not really. It's your choice and it's a free service. You don't have to post any information in the Facebook account and you're getting 10 hours of free music per month, in the hope that you will sign up for the Premium service. They have a business to run and there is no infringement on your personal freedom. If you don't want it, don't sign up!
If you don't want it, don't sign up!
Thats the thing, I'd probably be a good potential customer for spotify but i didnt sign up... Its likely i'm in the minority here but there must be other people who think that when you're paying for something they shouldn't be trying to get access to personal stuff either.
I think a lot are forgetting the basic service is 'free' and Spotify as a whole is a fantastic application. Yes I agree tying it to Facebook isn't something that I welcome, but if it keeps the service going, then so be it. Its not making a lot of money by all accounts, so anything that can keep it running is a good thing in my book and I'm a Premium member and don't mind paying £10 a month for a great service.
Lets face it guys, how hard is it to just open a Facebook account and not put any personal details on there? Use a false name too if you don't want to give anything away, its easily done. My Facebook account has no personal details at all, apart from my name and my Privacy is locked down. Its a bit like biting your nose off to spite your own face and how on earth can a free service that asks for certain things in return be an infringement on personal freedom - that's just nonsense IMHO, nobody is forcing you to open an account.
I use Skype with a joey email address and my user ID is a play on words basically saying mind your own business - you can make these things work for you you know, without having to give anything away and have a bit of fun too ;)
For the slight inconvenience (and it is slight) of setting up an account without giving anything away, I get to see and chat to my best mate in China and it doesn't cost me a penny.
I do find it strange that a growing number of people expect everything to be free these days.....
Anyway, enough of all that, I'm off to listen to this weeks album club and enjoy me some toons'

Righto guys, so I've taken the punge and now have a spotify acccount! as I'm putting my privacy on the line here I guess that means you have to put me down for a nomination in the album club!

As I say, maybe I'm looking at things incorrectly, but there do appear to be members that are possibly submitting what they'd post & frankly this is not the way to do it.

No prejudice...

Hi all, I'd like to join the Album Club please. I've not read the R&R's as yet but I'll get down to it later once the heat has died down a bit and I can think straight... :D

Thanks to Colin for submitting this week's Album Club record:
Week 45: 12.06.2012 - The Duke and the King - 'The Duke and the King' (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?p=335784#post335784)
Sorry Chris, my post is a bit unclear maybe. The band is called The Duke and the King and the album is self titled. Simone Felice is the band leader.
Thanks.
I haven't figured out how to add a Spotify link to my posts as yet, can someone demonstrate please? I hope it doesn't involve Facebook because I don't have an account and I'd rather not have to create one...

OK Colin, I'll fix it in a moment.
Dave, embedding Spotify:
The simple version -
In Spotify, right click a track, album or playlist and select 'Copy Spotify URI'. Paste that into a post with SP tags, or use the Spotify button under 'Go Advanced'.
The Simpleton's version - is here (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=17439&highlight=spotify)
.......and I count myself as a simpleton here!
Not sure if i did it correctly but i clicked the spotify symbol and cut and paste the album title in spotify in between the brackets that appear in the post if that makes sense.
Blind as a bat me
spotify:album:1IRzjAaf0c93kLKZQqfEH0
Hopefully this works... ;)
p.s. Indeed it does, cheers... :)

Well done.
The titles are changed now Colin.
Sorry Chris, my post is a bit unclear maybe. The band is called The Duke and the King and the album is self titled.
Colin - I checked your Spotify link and it leads to the album titled Nothing Gold Can Stay and I edited your Album Club entry to suit. Please can you clarify? The only s/t album I could find has 4 tracks. Which is it?
Big thanks to Steve (aquapiranha) for this week's album club selection - Week 46: 19.06.2012 - Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther (2006) (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18491) - looks interesting. :)
Next week is RichB - followed by synsei and Martinh - getting close to the end of the list, so anyone else want a go let me know and I'll add you on.

Working on it now Alex!
Can I join in please? I've read some of this thread for da rules but 48 pages goes well beyond the limits of my 'give-a-tossometer' :eyebrows: :ner:
I get that you give me a date and I do an intro and stuff. Do I have to declare the album here?
Ps Alex: I see another kid in your profile. no doubt I'm way behind everyone, but congrats.
pps I begged my gp for a vasectomy the other day.

I've added you to the list - you're up on Week 51, the 24th July
The first post in this thread pretty much covers most of it.
Here's a bit more:
Keep the album as a surprise until your day comes around.
Don't be late on the day
Answer any messages you get from Alex or other moderators in the days leading up to your day.
If it looks like you're not going to make the deadline, let us know in good time so we can help - it is possible for us to post it on your behalf if you have it already prepared.
Don't leave it until the last minute to prepare your post - I like to type out my submission in advance and send it to myself as a PM, so it's all formatted & ready to go when needed. If you need help then PM one of us (Alex, Martin or myself might be best.....or all of us).
If you miss the bus, it goes without you - someone else will have an extra turn or we will pick something from the box of goodies we have stashed away for no-shows.
synsei (Dave) has unfortunately been ill (get well soon mate) - so MartinT has been plucked from the hat and has posted up this week's choice - enjoy (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18739)!
Here's the next 3 - any more newer members want to join the queue? If not, then we'll go round again. :)
Martinh - Week 49: 10.07.12
Osvaldo - Week 50: 17.07.12
Ashmore - Week 51: 24.07.12
Hi,
I've just put my album club selection up, but need to edit the poll to show the scores i.e. 1/10, 2/10, 3/10 etc.
Can a moderator do this for me please?
Cheers,
The Grand Wazoo

'tis done.
Hi,
I've just put my album club selection up.
Many thanks Martin!
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18829
Just to let everyone know the album club has its own section so that people can easily refer to all the albums that has been up for nomination
http://theartofsound.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=45
In the future if having a album to share please put it in this section
I will also add these instructions to the first post of this thread
What a great idea, I know there are some I have missed, I can now go through and catch up . . . ;)
Big thanks to Osvaldo for this week's selection (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18960).
Next week sees Ashmore complete round 2 of Album club - and coincidentally, will complete the first year! So, unless anyone else wants to chuck their name in the hat, we will go back to the beginning and do it all again the week after next. :)
I'm limbering up for my turn. Shall I send you poll criteria by pm Alex?

You should be able to do it yourself Simon, once you've posted the thread, look at the top right - Thread Tools > Add a Poll to this Thread
Guys - the schedule for Round 3 is now included in post #1 (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=239311&postcount=1) of this thread if you'd like to see when your next turn is. :)
