What a decent bunch of guys, letting Bell off like that..........Still, England fully deserve their current status, soon to be world number 1......about time too, we've had our noses rubbed into the green for decades, especially in the 80's with Lamb, Gower, Gooch etc constantly underperforming. Hopefully the education authorities will re-introduce Cricket back into the school's curriculum? COME ON ENGLAND :ner:

This Govt. is more likely to re-introduce chimney sweeping as an extra curricular activity.

Kudos to M S Dhoni for agreeing to withdraw the appeal. International incident averted there, methinks.

The odds of England beating India at cricket are pretty slim any more.
In India it is all about Cricket, every school kid knows how to play and with over a Billion people they have a huge pool of players to choose the best from.

If England is going to beat India they will have to draft some Indian players.
China will soon be beating us at baseball, the world is just changing.

Sorry Jeff but we are in the middle of a 4 match series of 5 day test matches .. which is the ultimate examination of a teams capabilities. England have just thrashed the Indian team twice in 3 weeks are are 2 nil up in the 4 match series ... The Indian press is hammering the Indian team .. I think their press is even more merciless than ours .... so I think England will be the no1 test match team in the world after this series .. but whether they can stay there is the big question .. staying there is harder than getting there .. :)

I was not aware of that,I don't follow sports,I was just looking at things in terms of odds based on the numbers of people.
At least there is some normalcy left in the world. GOOD FOR ENGLAND!

Well we do have an Irishman and 2 or 3 who could equally have played for South Africa in the team .. .. and there is usually a Welshman somewhere around too ... We've even had a Scottish captain in the past ... haha!

But .. we are playing some good stuff right now so I am just enjoying it while it lasts ... ....... and also I am exceedingly glad that Test Match cricket .. as opposed to the shorter forms of the game .... is still proving to be exciting, unpredictable ... and all round great entertainment.

In fact you could liken Test Match cricket to listening to music whilst sitting down on your favourite couch .. surrounded by all your favourite nibbles and snacks .... rather than the shorter forms of cricket which would amount to listening to your Ipod through headphones whilst running round the park swigging from a beer can .. ..... :lolsign:

Bloody hell a cricket thread...hurrah!!!

We are indeed battering the pants off India, in test matches, in English conditions, but that's what home advantage is all about...;)

The one dayers will be dramatically different...

At least our bowlers are UK born, shame the same can't be said about the batting line-up, where I believe only Bell and Cook were born in the UK. Anyway that old chestnut has been done to death.

FYI Jeff I played for the 1991 California Cricket Champions, Santa Clara, we were strongly bolstered by a bunch of Indian IT guys, including one ex test player (who's name escapes me, I think he only played a couple of tests in the 80's) :eyebrows:

As for Dhoni letting Bell off...a nice gesture perhaps, but come on play to the rules, Strauss & Flower's begging to the Indian team was pathetic. This sets a dangerous precedent, are we going to refer all decisions to committee now?

I liked Ravi Shastri's statement on the matter, 'If Strauss and Flower had come knocking on my door, I'd have said two words...the second one would have been "off"'.

I remember playing in the north Lancs league many moons ago, I'd left one outside off stump which went through to the keeper, the wicket keeper had passed the ball to first slip, I went down the pitch to do a bit of gardening and first slip threw down the stumps...Out!!! One quickly learns to keep ones eye on the umpire ;)

It'll be interesting to see if Tremlett gets back in for the next test, I doubt it, as they'll stick with 4 bowlers in all probability, and one couldn't drop any of them after the last performance...what a bowling attack!!! It must be a nightmare to face in helpful conditions :)

Test Match Special broadcasts have been known to keep me going when everything else is swirling down the plug hole.
I listen on Long Wave by choice, for the added entertainment of the Shipping Forecast.

I too think we'll see the same four bowlers selected. I do miss watching international standard leg spin, though. Will, would you agree that the best chance of seeing leg breaks from an England player is dependent on the form of Adil Rashid?

This is an old one, but for the benefit of those that may have not seen it, here's all you need to know:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men are out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

I have to say i wasn't surprised by the marvelous sporting gesture from the Indian cricket team , not sure if that "other" team would have been so sporting (you know who i mean) ;)

As for a number of England players being born overseas , i say get over it ! This is a multicultural nation , should we insist on pure bred and white Englishmen then ! How would that make us look ?

I wouldn't write off India in this series just yet , i expect them to produce something special in the next test, should be a crackerjack finish to the series.

Agreed about leg spin Johnny, watching Warne was a treat, except against England when it was just terrifying...;)

I'm not quite sure what's happened to Rashid, he was one of our brightest hopes in the one dayers against Oz in 2009 with both bat and ball, yet since then he seems to have gone backwards...certainly in the selectors eyes.

The fact that they picked Yardy over him for the 50 overs matches in Oz in the winter was strange, T20 yes, but not in a 50 overs match, where wickets in the middle section are crucial. I noticed he was batting at 11 for Yorkshire the other day, again in a T20, but he's better than that surely...

Still at least I can enjoy watching a superb offspinner in Swann, it's been a long time since we had such a good one, perhaps not even in my lifetime. :)

Agreed Chris, and frankly given the scarcity of schools cricket in this country we need all the help we can get ;)

As for an Indian backlash, you may be right, I think the injuries to Youvraj & Harbi may well be a blessing in disguise for them. Kohli & Mishra will probably come into the team, and they're both excellent IMHO. A lot will also depend on Kahn's fitness, he's been a massive loss to them.

I suppose it all depends on what sort of pitch Mr Rouse comes up with at Edgbaston, I'm sure England will have requested another 'green' one, but will there be any turn for Swann & Mishra (probably)?

Yes Edgbaston has always had a bit of turn in it , its also been result pitch over the years , not to many draws i can recall ? Tendulker to get his hundred ? looking forward to it.

I hope so (in a loosing cause of course), the lad is absolute class, and real gent too, he just needs someone to take some pressure away at the other end.

I'm hoping to wangle a couple of tickets from some mates who are members, but it might be tough...I think they could have sold it out twice ;)

Unless it's a slow turner it could be another England win...:)

I'd argue that this could be the best of 'modern times', can you think of a better quartet of bowlers, from one team (with the exception of Tremlett perhaps :)) ?

Laxman gone now... disarray!

griffo104

Probably had better individual players but as a team i think this is the best I've seen.

OK, how would it do against the Aussies when Waugh was in charge but the same could be said about them against the Windies from the 70's and 80's.

No matter what happens at the moment a couple of players always seem to rise up and do something.

We are batting well down the order and the bowling is aggresive and certainly in our environment we have bowlers make full use of their skill.

India 224 all out. Captain's innings from MS Dhoni with good support from Kumar turning it around from 111 for 7.

25 overs (max) left for England this evening to make a good start to their reply. My prediction is for England to be just under the 100 run mark for 1 wicket down at close tonight.

Bare in mind that this team, save for a few changes, are the current one day World Cup holders...so they're not bad cricketers, but their collective egos are taking a battering ;)

I think there are a lot of factors contributing towards their poor test match performances in this series;

1. They're up against one of the best England test teams in recent memory, on pitches that favour the home team. The only players with any real experience of English conditions are Tendulkar, Dravid, and Kahn, from their county championship experience...and it shows! Ok Miranda played a bit of T20 but that that doesn't really count.

2. They've just had a change of coach, from the much loved Garry Kirsten, to Duncan Fletcher, and I'm not sure his more dictatorial style will be allowed to work with these established (or over the hill) 'superstars'.

3. They've never been a good fielding team, OK they are plumbing new depths , but their players are all growing old together, and two days out in the field is really exposing this.

4. Probably more importantly Test cricket is not viewed as the pinnacle of the sport in quite the same way in India, one dayers are king over there, on slow low pitches. Their 'pop gun' containing bowling attack reflects this.

5. Without Z. Kahn and Harbijan the bowling is innocuous at best, and they have very little strength in depth.

6. A few of these guys are over the hill superstars, and do not respond well to public humiliation, and they are having their collective noses rubbed in the dirt at the moment.

7. They were completely under-prepared, they only had one warm up game on a flat track at Taunton as preparation.

8. I don't think they've selected their best test team, as test batsmen Kholi & Badrinath are both probably better technically than Raina.

I could go on, but I'm boring myself...;)

Perhaps it lends a lie to the ICC rankings, perhaps their ranking system needs to give more emphasis to 'away' victories, as India have always been much stronger at home.

I wonder what would happen if one switched around the bowling attacks of the two teams, something I often considered with the great Australian and West Indies teams, how would our batting fare against our bowling attack on these pitches...this Indian bowling attack is probably less than county standard.

Indeed Keith, and not just India, it's destroyed the Windies test team, and by all accounts is having an adverse effect on NZ too...But it's easy to understand I suppose, as a cricketer there are few earning opportunities, and not every country has the luxury of central contracts...:)

When England spent 2 or 3 decades getting trounced, we were discussing how poor we were. Now we're winning we're discussing how poor the opposition are. Why can't we accept the fact, that at the moment, we are probably the best test side in the world? let's enjoy the moment, not undermine by rubbishing the opposition. In case anyone had forgotten, India are currently number 1 in the world and the current World Cup holders

I know we can only beat what is put in front of us .... and yes, there always seems at the moment someone to step up and give that big performance when we are getting into trouble. That has always been a hallmark of great sides ... But .. these Indians for reasons already eloquently stated are abysmal .. and they do have a couple of notable absentees .. So ...
Let's do it away from home a couple more times .... Then I will jump on the bandwagon .... I am really chuffed with the way we are playing .. :lolsign:
