Anyone using the Caiman DAC as a preamp as well? If so just wondered what poweramp/s are being used/favoured. I currently use a Caiman (passive mod and linear power supplies) through the variable outputs to an Avondale A260 power amp and interested in shortlisting a few worthy alternatives (better?) for comparison. Any suggestions in the "low cost world beater" category would be very acceptable.

i suggest it would be unlikely you find a low cost power amp that will beat the a260

Try one of these-

They are truly amazing for the money.

The temple audio mono blocks are excellent, like the gold but on steroids.....

Yes, no doubt even better than the Gold.

Wouldn't the Caiman be better in this preamp role with Gator fitted? I suppose if it was a one-stop approach, suitable value caps could be used on the Caiman...

Thanks to all the suggestions so far. I have not gone for a Gator as the amp I use currently does not suffer from any gain type issues that I can detect.

What about Caiman and valve power amps - anyone gone down this route?

I use an iTube Fatman together with a Caiman+ on my desk, and I like the sound very much.

(Another photo of the amp and the DAC can be seen on this → AoS thread (http://www.theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?p=239031#post239031).)

The Fatman is a hybrid amplifier, don’t know if you consider this to be a true valve amp.
