The cost of TT

I've read various threads on AOS about the increased cost of various TT's mainly the 1210, and Garrards. But, I have a question. Which deck do you think should gain cult status and be modded as much as the 1210?? It would be nice to look on fleabay, buy a cheap TT, tweak to my hearts content and get a sound as nice as I have with my 1210.

The amount of modification to do kind of depends on other people having already done it and provide upgrades for you - unless you've a machine shop in the shed..

That ends up pushing you into an established modding community who are already pushing prices up due to their numbers and enthusiasm.

Make your own from scratch instead?

I've done the Linn, Gerrard, and now the Technics things, I wondered what could be next, as for making my own TT. I run 3 companies and am currently studying for a MSc and possibly opening up another office in the next 3 months, I dont have time mate :eek:

Blimey - if you're that busy, I would just forget a new t/t project, sit back and enjoy the choons you have in the spare minutes you get. :)

The Lenco a great project but like everything not so cheap these days but still a lot cheaper than a 301 or 401

I'd agree - just go to a dealer and buy a proper turntable, for goodness sake. ;)

I'm having great fun with my Lenco - I think there's scope to be a bit more adventurous with the Lenco than there is with a Garrard.

Yeah, and all the bodgers butcher good working decks to pieces and then find what's left very difficult to sell... Great for the rest of us though, who like to keep things nice and as original as possible :)

best to try to find a clean GL59 or similar oldie, properly service it, plinth it, wire it, fit with a period cartridge - oh all right, summat durable from the 60's - and enjoy music to your hearts content. A tannoy variluctance cartridge freshly re-tipped for 78's and a collection of same will give you immense pleasure I reckon - far better than messing about with those awful vinyl thingies :lol:

I don't support the hacking up of top plates, Dave. However all the stuff that's attached to it can be usefully and reversibly modified to good effect.

+1 on an older Lenco.

My problem is that they are just not plentiful around these parts; neither, are Garrards or Linns. Conversely, it seems like Techies (1200s) keep falling out of the sky. Fortunately, they're great tables; but, I'd love to have a 301, 401, TD124, TD125 or GL75 as a project.

I seen a few bad hack jobs but also heard some done up right and sounding pretty good
