I'll post something nearer the time when I know when we will probably arrive. The Target R2's and the DM2's will be the bits we might need a hand with.
The cd part of the system is sounding pretty good. Just got a few tweeks to do with the 2 Teccy's and we'll be ready to go.

So who's going? What do you want to have a listen to? Have you got anything to do to your system in before the show?
I think the system Dave and I are taking is just about finalised. There will be a broadcast deck, a disco deck, some fancy pre-amp with lots of knobs and switches, 80w valve monos and teaktastic transmission line speakers on stupidly heavy stands. And a cdp and some hi-res files.
Got to get the Hadcock on the Sp-10 and wait for the new stylus to arrive. Set up and sort out cable for the 1210. Decide on what music to take. And terminate speaker cables properly.
Plenty of time.

Following my 1970s system from last year, I'm going 1980s and bringing the mighty Bang & Olufsen Beolab 8000 system, consisting of -
Beomaster 8000 receiver
Beocord 8000 cassette deck
Beogram 8002 turntable
Beovox MS150.2 speakers
CD player will either be a Philips CD471 or last year's Cambridge CD1 again.
The room I have been allocated at the moment will probably be only big enough for this lot, but I'll bring a second system if I'm lucky enough to end up with a bigger room!
Incidentally is anyone interested in my Garrard GA200 music centre for the CAC room? I'll drop it off on the day with some Goodmans Maxims if so.

I was going to exhibit but fell fowl of the rules as I was unable to get there last year due to my car breaking down which technically does not make me a "first time" exhibitor.
Thinking of maybe going (as a visitor) - I'm 5th on the subs bench so don't hold out much hope now. Going to pull out of exhibiting later today.

Trouble is AOS will get the room of whoever pulls out and from previous posts Marco is unlikely to accept a room that he's not happy with ie a pokey little 10x8 room with suspended floor and shite acoustics. Me, my system will probably sound shite anyway so I'm as happy as a sand boy with my little box room on the 1st floor, even if I will do my back in hauling my amp & speakers up the stairs.

Any idea what happens if AoS are offered a room but turn it down? I guess that room will go to whoever is no. 2 on the sub's bench, but would AoS remain on the bench at number one (to be subsequently offered the next room to come up, and so on), or is that it? Or does AoS go back on the bench in last place?

There is a possibility of the rooms being changed once the allocations are firmed up with the hotel. I'm planning for the 2nd floor though.
Now which one of you big boys fancy lugging 30-odd kg of my speaker stands up the stairs for us?

Indeed, but it's not much 'fun' having a room that doesn't suit your system. We like to use big speakers with powerful amps, so we need the right room to accommodate that, and showcase it properly.
I can think of better ways of spending a day than lugging all my kit down to a hotel to sit there listening to a shite sound, and then everyone reporting how pish it sounded on all the forums! :mental: :doh: ;)

I signed up at the last minute last year to make the numbers up to 50. Set off very early on the Sunday morning. Got a tiny room with a laminate floor. Only sounded good with 6 people in to act as sound deadening. Hardly left my room all day. Lugged it all back home again.
Had a brilliant time.
Plan to work with the room we are given. Borrowing some corner traps and will take lots of soft stuff (doubles a packing) to try and make the best of it.
Good for you, Mark, and I hope you enjoy yourself just as much this year. But I trust that you can respect that others are entitled to have different needs.

I did measure it once, and saved it for reference, but can't remember where the heck I put it...
Although my room at home is small, it's 'perfectly formed', as in it has massively thick walls (with the house being 125 years old), and although the floor is suspended, it's very solid. The room is also full of beams and angles to break up reflections, so the acoustics are excellent.
So, then.... About as far away as you can get from your average small hotel room, which isn't on the ground floor! ;)

The SP10 isn't going either, The thought of constantly watching in case some idiot decided to have a play and trashed my 3 grand cartridge was just a heart attack in waiting.

Not really "done" anything to be honest, but mandatory is a rock sold base. I'm not joking when I say you could shoulder charge mine from 10 paces and the arm wouldn't budge, mind you when fully loaded it does weigh over 100kg. The rest is just the best arm and cartridge combination you can afford. So although I have a £3k cartridge I'll quite happily stick on my £50 Pickering V15 and still have a smile on my face when listening. I'm lucky to be able to afford some of the things I have but at the end of the day the be all and end all of this hobby is the music not the kit. My best hifi investment I ever made was £15 on a Nils Lofgen acoustic Live CD and sod what kit I play it on.
Now I'm not suggesting you go to the extremes of my plinth/rack but IMO 10kg is the minimum for a good stable plinth and shouldn't cost the earth to get one.

I'm quite happy with my arm and cartridge. Hadcock GH228 and Shure VST V. There will be a temporary plinth made out of an old kitchen worktop. Then Maybe something in slate later in the year.

Not really interested in Scalford until Bristol has been and gone as I have a stand there this year, next to DC as it happens!
After I had an SP10 over chritsmas in its original technics corian plinth I got withdrawal symptoms it was that good. The Isonoe feet transformed it when I put them on.
Yes hope to see you again at Scalford if they let me in...:lol:

Yep - that's the whole point of the exercise. :)
Even if people don't have the inclination to actually put together a CAC system, if anyone would like to lend a very cheap component for the day then feel free - as Mike has eluded to, I suspect the day will be more about demonstrating how good a sound you can get for beer money rather than a straight competition, and it could be fun to swap around as many boxes as possible searching for the magical synergy. :) :thumbsup:

Well, that's the million Dollar question... Yes we want it, if it's big and on the ground floor, and no, if it's not.
What I don't understand is why size and location can't be guaranteed... Is this getting decided at the end, once all rooms have been confirmed as taken, or what...? :scratch:
I have to say that it's a somewhat haphazard way of doing things and doesn't encourage us to commit to taking a room.

If you take the room, atm it will be the room Tommy has just given up. Being as Tommy has deleted his details from the spreadsheet I'm not sure which room it was.
Just for clarity, the rooms to be used on the day are not yet finalised between Scalford & the Wam. Exhibitors have been allocated a room from last years floor plan, but the rooms to be used could well be different from last years allocation yet. I wouldn't think it will be that different from last years floorplan though.
In the interest of fairness the decision on if you're taking the room or not needs to be made ASAP to give others on the subs bench as much time as possible for organising their trip/day etc. IIRC flatpopely is next up after AoS. I think all you can go on is the premise that it will be a small room & anything bigger will be a bonus. It would be a shame for AoS not have a system there, even if it has to be smaller than previous years.

Small systems aren't really us, primarily because the people who supply the kit that makes up our typical show system, don't have small systems at home, so all the gear is very big and heavy and not suitable for lugging up multiple flights of stairs...
Anyway, I totally accept what you're saying, and so in that case, it's fairer if we pass on it and let someone else have a go. However, if when the final room allocations are made, there is a large room on the ground floor available, we will definitely take it. But it can't be a last minute thing, as we will have stuff to organise.
I think that's the best way of taking things forward :cool:

If it's on the 3rd floor it's quite likely to be pretty spacious. Not sure if you'll get many visitors on the roof, unless the weather is really good.;)

If you'd been allocated a place in the "1st draw", and not been on the subs bench at all, you'd still not have been given a definite room.
So the subs bench offer isn't really any different to being given a room allocation in the first place.
Go on, get on to Mark Browellm and take a place. :thumbsup: ... if it doesn't suit, if doesn't suit and offer it on.
No, I don't agree. What's the point in going to all the considerable effort and difficulty to take a system that you know will sound poor in a smaller room? However, I suppose one could always alter the demo system to use speakers that would work in a smaller room....

My understanding of the room allocation is they are based on what is availble last year but at present this is not confirmed so they are the likekly room
I was going to bring my Salvation if I had a better room but the room I hav e just would not really show up my TT in its best light I love to have a bigger room on the ground floor but will have to adapt. Martin will be bringing his 1210 so we still have a TT but I know a few people were looking forward to hearing the Salvation

I understand where you're coming from, but the way things are being organised is not taking into consideration that people have to make plans well in advance, such as arranging appropriate transport to carry large items like equipment racks, speakers, etc, and other necessary personal arrangements - all of which can't be done at the last minute, or whenever the organisers are planning on telling people what room they've got.
In that respect, I think it's a little unfair keeping people hanging on like this, wondering what's happening. That approach just doesn't suit us, as we like to do our planning early, and stick to it, to account for all eventualities.
The way it is now is certainly not how we would've organised things, but hey, it's not our show. As an aside, we'll be looking into doing our own show in future. There's no reason now why it isn't possible, so plans will be put into place for it to happen.
Anyway, we've pulled out of this year's Scalford show now, and that's that, so please everyone, respect our decision and let's leave it there :cool:

Well rather shockingly I/we now have a room again this year, second floor in 2F Syndicate 17 (so far) unless it gets changed.
System to be sorted out but will be different to previous years (we always change it, more interesting isn't it?!) and will include the 30 year old Heybrook TT2 in some guise or other!

Hi all,
Due to some last minute bad luck with a shared room (unusual connection requirements) I will be unable to demo my amplifiers at its originally designated room
Instead, would anyone like to give these amps a whirl or even like the idea of using them for the day?
What makes these amps special?
- No caps in the signal path
- Triode (6S4S) push-pull, before-which the signal is split by a coupling interstage transformer (old-school style)
- Double choke power supply
- Tantalum resistors
- Top notch Sowter transformers
Sonically these amps are an education in themselves... in that its an old-school style amplifier taken to the extreme. The sonic results are mind-blowing, they produce a sense of realism that is really spooky (while keeping the music fun and powerful).
These are integrated monoblocks, each with a single pair of 4mm/banana loudspeaker sockets (I have 5m bi-wire cable for them if needed). Power about 7W but certainly beefier than my 300B SET. Will work on 89+dB/W/m loudspeakers.

Hmmm maybe it could be solved by sticking a preamp on the bass amps...
The Audio Note box is a kit DAC 2.1 signature, which I hope to bring to John and Vic's room anyway. * Pretty awesome NOS valve juiciness.

I'm more than a little pissed off with my JBL's which i'm using in my C.A.C system, the idea was to rub the cabs down and get rid of the scratches and grain, then spray them gloss black. Well the paint has had some sort of reaction, so that's 3 days work gone, just hope i can get them ready in time :wah:

Almost got my stuff ready for the show. Following the recent fashion of making armboards out of wood I have gone down the same route.
I have used a spare shelf from my cd rack to mount my Hadcock on the SP-10. It looks crap. Maybe we'll have to keep the lights down low in the room.
I'm just waiting for the delivery of some psu caps for my valve amps now. I'm crossing my fingers that that will sort out a minor problem. Otherwise there'll be a bit of last minute sorting out of them.
I'd better terminate my speaker cables a bit better as well.
Then I've just got to get it all in the car.

I reckon it should be okay. The caps should arrive on Monday. I might have guessed wrong and it's resistors starting to go. Worst case is that it's valves on the way out, but I don't think so. Might be an expensive week if it is.
On one of them it hums a little bit a few seconds after switch-on and then that dies away after a few minutes.

Turntable, power supply, phono stage, regenerator, 3 x system racks. Cables. All boxed. It'll be a challenge in my 2-door coupe :)
Lol - indeed. So you don't fancy bringing your preamp? If you can manage it, I'd love to hear it with my Copper amp. I hold your Pass Labs in the highest regard.
When most people try a 'hybrid' approach, they usually opt for a valve preamp and an SS power amp. However, when the synergy is right, and the quality of the kit is superb, stunning results in my experience can be achieved by doing it t'other way round! ;)
The Copper amp, incidentally, is very sensitive and it also has variable feedback/gain, so we should be able to 'marry' it perfectly to your Pass Labs :)

Had to sell my ardens,but will now have a pair of audio note Es in use.
I have been after trying out a Loftin-White 2A3 amp for a while so my mate has been building one to try and it looks like it will be finished this week, is anyone taking some easy loading speakers and wants a listen, it will need a pre amp of some description although i could chuck in my Audio Note M1, it has been put together from canabilsed parts so as such it's a open chassis and a work in progress but it will hopefully sound devine and will have a massive 3 watts of SE power.
Is there a sort of AOS room ?

At the risk of divergement (i made it up!) I would suggest this is a very important subject. My son and his girlfriend - who are not wealthy - want to get into vinyl. I have given them a pair of Mordaunt Short speakers and I know where they can get a turntable for £35 in good shape. I personally tried to put a budget system together for the office, less than £50 and I succeeded at £35 including a pair of TAnnoy speakers, no turntable. Budget is good and can be great fun. There is some terrific kit available out there at very modest prices and it produces no less of a sound in many instances than kit costing much, much more. IMHO

Not sure if the Loftin-white will make it, it was up and running yesterday sounds pretty good but needs a bit of fettling to get it perfect but have another amp up my sleeve to bring with a thunderous 3 watts of power :eyebrows:

If you drive it's not to bad.It's pretty central for a lot of the uk.
I think the trouble with the city centre venues is that most are pretty soul less.

to be blunt, i don't see what people are complaining about regarding the location of the Wam show. There is only one a year and it's only on for one day - wherever it was held it would be inconvenient for many - you can't expect it to be a short stroll from your house!
To get 50 people to bring systems,and getting 500 or more to attend to pay for the show is no easy feat.

Did i mention near me! This place may aswell be a castle in the middle of the N.Yorks moors.I dont care where in the centre of the country it is held as long as it's easy acessable.. What about Public transport users!! especially sunday for crying out loud.. Maybe you ought to leave the car at home then & see how you get there & back with public transport.. you might make 2 hours of the show if your lucky.

The Manchester show is in the centre of a northern city - its still not that close to a railway station and it is either very expensive, or very difficult, to park ones car. I appreciate that some do not drive, but the reality is that the vast majority of show goers will be travelling by car.

The railway station comment is totally inappropriate - there's a station a quarter mile stroll away (Manchester Victoria).
The mainline station (Manchester Picadilly) is less than a mile walk too.
There is a rail link between the two.
I do agree on car parking prices in Manchester - they are scarily expensive.
You do need to look around, and be prepared to travel up to the last half mile on foot.

Funnily enough, I thought that's what you meant too..... ;)
There is no doubt, having returned from there today, that the Scalford venue makes no attempt to cater for public transport users. In many other respects it's a lovely venue but it's definitely out in the sticks and that's a shame.
It was great meeting so many AoS members face to face yesterday. What an incredibly varied community we have. Good people, good sounds, lovely setting - what was not to like? :)

There were some expensive systems that frankly didn't sound that way, & some cheap ones that sounded the opposite to :eyebrows:
I think like my first visit in 2011 it was more of a pleasure meeting people! Not going to gibber on too long but it was a real pleasure meeting AnthonyTD (what a real gentleman) & MartinT - the same goes for you to!
I want to thank you both simply for being who you are & talking from where it counts ;)
Was a pleasure to also meet Hugo (shuggie) & Mike (jak hawk), bests of everything to the both of you to! If I missed anyone off of the list it's probably because my head is out there somewhere & not communicating with my damn fingers :doh:
Obviously it was also a pleasure to see AoS members that I had met previously :)
I think Anthony has kind of convinced me to come back... He's a much braver man than me to - your not a Gemini are you? They are good talkers, I know as I am one :eyebrows:
