View Full Version : Rare car in the U.S.
I can't believe the original condition of this wedge shaped TR8.
At the time it came out I hated them,The TR7 and 8 are still my least favorite Triumph.
Having said that, I have come to grips with the fact that it was a style ahead of it's time as so menny far later cars look just like it!
This thing is so rare here in the U.S. because so few where imported before the Unions killed Triumph.
And this one has never been repainted or restored!
I prefer a TR4,TR5,TR250 or even a TR6 but they lost me after that.
I have yet to ever see a TR5 in the States but I'm not dead yet so I may some day.
They had real reliabity issues and were a pig to work on

If there was anything left to work on that hadn't rusted away! This one has I suspect only survived so nicely as it is a "dry state" car - probably been in California all it's life.

Well the paint work is not as original as you think, you can see its had paint work done on it that stands out a mile.As said was a real rust bucket in the UK.

Thats not another coat of paint,it's the clear coat pulling away. It still has all the original decals and good luck finding those here.

Excellent taste, Jeff!
You either have it, or you don't :facepull: :ner:
We used to have an old Mini and I loved going round the shows and enjoying them. Finding a 'Paul Smith' was like finding a TR8 in the US I guess!

What is a Paul Smith?
I saw a Toledo on the road the other day - now that did look weird! Old cars are so small compared to current ones!

I used to have a Toledo - the previous owner painted it bile green...........with a brush! I was on my third engine with that when I sold it. You could nab 'em off the shelf for £40 at the time!
A while later I bought an automatic Dolomite 1500 TC - from a guy called John Lennon in Scotland!
A Dolly Sprint came next - I still own it

They were only 'TR7's with Rover V8's.. the 'TR6' was the last decent Triumph..

What is a Paul Smith?
It's a limited edition old mini with customisation by the designer Paul Smith. 1500 made worldwide, 300 in the UK and we had one :)

hi Jeff,
i rebuilt an engine in a TR7 once, i remember thinking as i got in it to test drive it, there is no way a lady could exit this car with her dignity in tact,as the sills are so high, there is a real knack in getting in and out of one for sure, i also built a carb for a V8 version.
The TR6 was one of my favourite shapes, but if you look at any of those cars today, they look old, especialy when you see cars that in the day were considered "big" ie; capri's cortina's etc, they do look rather small against moder equivilents.

The TR6 looks very cool though and so did the TR3 but the isinglass side curtens and under powered motor made it 2nd to the TR4 and the TR5 was king but not imported to the U.S. because of smog laws so we got a few non fuel injected TR250's with a retarded version of a TR5 plant.
