This sort of question can only really be answered with another question, Joe mate! (Lots of questions, actually!)
What sort of things do you need from a pre-amplifier? Such as:
How many inputs do you need?
Do you need a phono stage?
Do you need a tape loop?
Will it be close to the power amp or will it have to drive a long interconnect?

Inputs need around 5,
Needs to have a phono stage for when i fix or get a new turntable.
Dont need a tape loop,
It will be mounted in a stand with amplifer on one shelf and pre above it on another shelf
Cheers :)

I have a Kenwood Basic C2 as shown HERE (http://cgi.ebay.com/KENWOOD-BASIC-C-2-C2-Preamplifier-Controller-MINT-/120742897963?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item1c1cd6692b).
Highly rated piece of kit. Do some googling on it and get back to me if you are interested.
